@custard- I’d suggest you apply at the aid giving colleges in the US and the top Indian colleges at the same time. Coming from the US you’ll have a REALLLLY hard time clearing the Indian competitions. So just apply at both the places, and then see how much aid you’re getting from the US colleges and which are the best Indian colleges you’ve made it to and then decide.
P.S. I’ve never gone OUT of India, so VERY VERY Indian :P

@nomad- Because of the APPLICATION cost?
You can apply for a fee waiver at all the colleges, dude. I didn’t pay a single dollar. All you actually need to pay for is SAT test score reports(SAT I reports are sent along with SAT II) and the airmail cost for sending one large envelope with your school and financial aid documents. Also, use IFSAA wherever possible. 90% of the colleges accept it and its free. Use the CSS FA app only where IFSAA is not allowed. And even that is not soooooo expensive!
If you apply smartly, you will not be spending more than ~Rs. 1000/college.

@gary really??? You mean i can apply for fee waiver even if i’m able to pay it, i mean i can pay 80 dollars but suppose i apply to say ten collages then the cost becomes prohibative, and also colleges(mit) ask for some fee waiver form from college board and it supposed to be filled out by my school principal or they say a letter can be mailed by my principle to them, so this will again include airmail costs(which i dont know how much they are) and i hope sending it to ten colleges will not itself work out to be expensive, and also will my school principal fill out the form or write the letter for me? And can you please kindly elaborate on the ifsaa and all you menioned cause i dont know what they mean.

@nomad- people a lot richer than you apply for fee waivers, so chill. Just get a letter from your GC stating that the application fee would cause hardship to your family and they’ll accept it easily. And the best way to send stuff is to sent the school transcripts+recs+application fee waiver+financial aid documents(tax returns+IFSAA etc.) together in one BIGGER envelope and send it by airmail at the SAME time. So just one post/college. Thats what I did, except I sent it by courier coz I didn’t have much time before deadlines.

As per what the IFSAA and CSS are, google them or check school/collegeboard sites.

CSS isn’t for international students. I mailed everything in a HUGE packet to my cousin in US who mailed the envelopes with everything in them to each college.

Fee waiver is easy peasy. Just get a letter from GC or Principal as gary7 said.

Guys, I am not thinking of colleges anytime soon. I mean maybe in 1-2 years but I’ll decide until then. I think Im just going to concentrate about right now my studies, but I give you all the best of all luck to whatever you are applying for.:)

You have exotic crushes, bubbles <_<
And its an Information Technology Adviser. Super cool job! You get to do all geeky stuff and finish your homework at work for 8 dollars/hour XD

@Aviator- CSS is required for some colleges which do not accept IFSAA. I’m SURE. Also Quasi did the same HUGE packet thing. Always advisable if you have a relative in the US.

haha, we broke up quite some time ago. I think there was something about it on this thread?
