The Indian Thread (TiT) #18

Btw one of my dad’s friends teaches at Bansals and he rakes in around a crore per annum.

^With that many students and their ‘fees’ around, a crore does not look that ‘big’ enough! Right-O?

Haha, agreed! :)

Harvy email :P

Thank you for welcoming me!!

harvard17, I find it very funny that you were accepted at Brown but rejected from UMich. Btw how do you apply to Mcgill or Toronto? Not that I’m going to apply there but I was wondering. Did you apply to Harvard?( your username suggests this). Your doing Astronomy and CS right?

And ansrox, I was stupid enough to create an username with my real name.

I’d bet my computer that he applied to UMich late. (within the deadline, but towards the later months)

@Debarghya9: A lot of my friends who got into amazing places were all ‘waitlisted’ or much worse ‘denied’ at UMich. The problem is the rolling admission technique, according to which the earlier you apply the better it is! So, although everyone wants to burst out laughing on this one (including me), there is a certain level of technicality behind it.

Canadian universities, comparatively, are less stressful to apply to than the American universities. You have to fill only the basic information for your application to McGill whereas you do have to write an additional essay for UToronto. No LORs or well rounded essays are required to ace the Admission’s game here. I advise you to look up their individual websites for more precise and detailed information.

And yes, I did apply to Harvard. In fact, if it hadn’t been for Harvard, maybe I would not have applied to US or anywhere else in the first place! Harvard, I still maintain, is the best university in the world for me. Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Price Winners, MacArthur Fellows, National Science Society members, The Harvard Widener system, Diverse and driven student body, research grants: you name it, they have it! Even though I have been denied entry this fall, I will still keep trying hard to realize my dream of walking in the same crimson-lit corridors as the ones which were once used by the likes of JFK, Tommy Lee Jones, Yo Yo Ma, El Gore et cetera. Ask someone on this thread about my love for Harvard, and they might offer you a better perspective!

Finally, yes I am deeply and truly interested in Computer Science and Astronomy!

@Aniruddh: I am working on it. You will get your response within the next two days!

@Blue: As far as I remember it, I applied in mid January!

Yea, me too. Should’ve applied in November / December.

@Debar- getting into Harvard is harvy’s dream… He’s really passionate about the uni… Lets hope he makes it to harvard as a transfer! :)

What is the whole rolling admissions process all about? Does it entail that I can apply at any time of the year? :S

^Depends on each university! Which uni are you thinking about?

^Harvard, I appreciate the fact that a person can fall irrevocably in love with one college- but honestly, do you think you can’t get ALL the factors about Harvard that you mentioned, at Brown?
PS. This really reminds me of an article on price differentiation- where slight differences between two goods are hyped up to get people to pay more for the (ever so slightly) better one.

@^major: UMich, and Purdue if it has a rolling admissions process as well

@harvy: As pointed out by Sush, Brown is just as good, if not better!

I’m doing my Environmental Education ISC board project on the BP Oil Spill.

You know what, I had to submit it in March. I didn’t know what topic to select because I couldn’t think of anything!

Then, God sent the Iceland volcanic explosion and the Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill.

Patience pays. :)

^Aniruddh, you can apply whenever the college starts accepting apps- with rolling admissions, you get your decision sooner, and applying earlier will give you an advantage over those who apply later.

@Aniruddh: Thanks a lot for the wishes buddy!

@Sushmita: Brown, as I have always said, is an amazing place. I am really blessed to have this wonderful opportunity to go to Brown. The strong undergraduate focus, the liberality of thought and the impeccable resources, alongside many other brilliant things, really make it a paradise for learning. But, for me, it is not Harvard. Harvard holds a distinct place in my heart and soul - a place no other university, howsoever good, can ever have!

Let me use an example to explain to you this subtle difference. Say, for instance, I fall love with a BMW. I love the car. I love its performance. I love the ‘feeling’. This car, is therefore, the car of my dreams. Now, my father, impressed by one of my many fine qualities (kidding!), gets me a Mercedes as a gift! I, as usual, am flattered and thank him from the bottom of my heart for the wonderful gift. But, somewhere in the same heart, I want that BMW. It still drives me crazy. It still brings a smile on my face. It still makes me feel special. Does this in any conceivable way mean that I do not value the Mercedes? Does this mean that I wish to part from it? No! I love it. I adore it! But, in my heart, I still harbor that desire to get myself a BMW…

Does this make sense? I hope it does, because it took a lot of time to write this much!

P.S. Looking at the bills that my father has to pay for my Brown education, I do not think I am getting a Mercedes as a gift from him anytime soon!

No, I get what you’re feeling completely, even without the example.
Even then, that stance is irrational, and (might I say?) rather ungrateful? If a person complained about a BMW while he had a Mercedes, he would have a hell of a lot to hear from me on the sheer ridiculousness of such an attitude!

Harvy, I love your analogies :D

We’re all so jealous of your Brown acceptance hence we can’t come to terms with the fact that you still want the “BMW” after getting the “Mercedes”!

@Sush: The common app for UM starts in August or something…

The effects of the BP Oil Spill are really disturbing…

@Harvard: I’m sorry- I might have sounded a bit rude there.
But after all, I’ve been rejected from my dream college too, and not been able to attend others I loved 'cause the aid wasn’t enough. You’re very lucky. And I’m sorry, but I see absolutely no justification for pining after Harvard when you have Brown. If that sounds rude, my apologies, but that’s how I feel.

I can understand how harvy feels. Harvard is in a different “league”. IMHO, BMW vs. Merc comparison is very generous to Brown.

Personally, I would pick Brown over Harvard without a nanosecond’s hesitation.

I do understand how harvy feels though. Kinda. I’ve fallen completely in love with Smith and am insanely grateful that I get to go there almost for free and think it is the PERFECT place for me. I honestly I don’t think I would go to Amherst now even if they suddenly changed their mind and decided they want me after all, but still…Amherst just stands out in my head. As the school that got away, or something equally ridiculous and corny and irrational.

In a way it’s a good thing I don’t get to go. No disillusionment issues :)
