The Interview Thread for SCEAers!

Hello, just wondering what the standard dress code is for an interview at the interviewer’s home? Or should I simply email him and ask what he prefers?

Probably semi-casual.

Just had my interview at a coffee shop. It went well; lasted about 40 minutes and my interviewer was precise in the questions she asked and the stories she told. But now I’m reconsidering my career choice because of a couple things she advised me about. Definitely a casual conversation that actually intrigued us both. I’m pretty satisfied with what came out of the interview. She told me she liked my voice-- twice. =p

kaio–Collared shirt and pants other than jeans if you’re a guy. Equivalent if you’re a girl.

so if I’m meeting at starbucks, would jeans/school clothes be okay…?

I’d dress up a bit more than that, just in case.

I wore black trousers and a shirt, just to be safe.

Thank you both :)

I had my interview this morning. It went really well, but it was slightly awkward at first because I don’t think either of us knew how to get started.

We didn’t really talk about usual interview questions though. She asked why I want to go to Yale, etc, but after that I told her about my classes at school, and we talked about the Catcher in the Rye, the new Harry Potter movie (both avid fans) and working on the Obama campaign. It was actually quite fun, and she gave me all this lovely advice about college and told me I’d be perfect for Yale, which was really wonderful to hear. She hugged me at the end, which was incredibly kind and unexpected. It lasted around an hour and forty minutes. In her email she said they usually last around 45 minutes though.

I wore black jeans, rainboots, a white sweater and a red coat. It was pretty much what I wear on an everyday basis though, and she was wearing a sweatshirt. I didn’t get the impression that my ensemble mattered much, assuming I wasn’t in sweatpants or something.

Good luck everyone!

Just got an email from my interviewer today! Interview is scheduled for next Monday. I was starting to worry, as other people in my city got interviews a couple weeks ago. He said that there’s no need to dress up, so I was thinking a nice long-sleeve shirt with jeans. What do you guys think?

Hmm, I just got contacted today for an interview on Dec. 1? I was hoping I wouldn’t get one, as I kinda screwed up my MIT interview (my interviewer said that I could have been more prepared if I had more time, and it was late august). Is it unusual to get it this late? Since the reports are due that day and the decisions come out in 2 weeks? I know I probably won’t get accepted, but I still feel really nervous…

Had my interview today. Got her number. We’re having “coffee” next week.

^Whoa for real???

In case ppl are wondering about dress, I wore a purple skirt, non-graphic t-shirt, and black columbia waterproof rain-coaty thing. (uhhh sorry that was very much not eloquent or articulate at all…) It was fine… Though I did have an interview at his office, so he was wearing a suit.

Had my interview with a lawyer at his firm so I went suit and tie. Glad I did, pretty sure everyone in the building had a charcoal suit with a blue or white shirt on. It ended up lasting ~2 hours, we talked current events, had a philosophical debate, recommended books to each other and I talked about myself and he about Yale. I thoroughly enjoyed the conversation and think he did too, it’s a shame that it has almost no bearing on my application.

^
What philosophical debate topic, if I may so ask?

Jersey13- wow! your interview seems so interesting. My interviewer didn’t ask me all that much. She was focusing more on hearing me speak than having a conversation or discussion.

^^ We discussed political philosophy and whether individuals had a natural tendency to act toward the good of a society or whether personal motives always superseded a “greater obligation”. We were in the midst of talking about behavioral economics and went on this small tangent which turned out to be not so small.

The Humanists vs Freud?

All applicants got interview from my D’s school. However my D has not been contacted for interview. Do we need contact ASC?

I had my interview yesterday, it was awful!! I had it secretly taped, here it is:
