The Interview Thread for SCEAers!

I had my interview last night and I think it went pretty well, especially considering I had a red eye flight from San Francisco the night before and was functioning on 2-3 hours of sleep. I think my interviewer liked me, and he thought Yale was a really good fit for my interests. We talked for an hour or so about local politics, the U.S.'s trading relationship with China, healthcare issues, etc.–it was a lot more conversational than I expected, minus the expected questions (i.e. “Why do you want to go to Yale?”). Good luck to the few people who are still waiting to interview (I’ve heard the reports are due tomorrow so I’d imagine today is the last day).

I had my interivew last week Sunday at the Barnes and Noble cafe across from the mall in Cincinnati. My interviewer was like 31, and he was really laid back. He had jeans on and sneakers, whereas I looked straight out of prep school. But we purchased our respective drinks, some coffee for him, and iced tea and a scone for me. We sat down and he talked about himself for like 10 minutes and then he asked me about my high school. I told him about how much graduating class has come together this year after being really cliquey and closed minded (I’m one of 5 African-Americans out of 300 in my grade). Then we talked about my activities and about me using yearbook to talk to people and to understand them, and about volunteering at my local hospital’s maternity ward. Him and his wife (who appeared a few minutes later, and who also happens to be a Yale alumni, they met at orientation) are expecting and will deliver when I’m at the hospital and I’m pretty sure I’d met them before when they toured the hospital. All in all, we talked for a good hour and 5 minutes, back and forth, and he even thought I was funny, and he was funny too. So it went very well and hopefully it is all the difference for my application to Yale. I’m so blessed to have had someone so down to earth and relatable for an interviewer.

I called my interviewer last Tuesday (after she left me a voicemail) but haven’t heard from her since. I figured she was busy with Thanksgiving or had family in town or something. Should I bother calling her again? The deadline is tomorrow so it seems kind of useless at this point

I don’t think I’m getting an interview (as expected)

Well, I was all set to fly back to the UK from Spain this evening so I could do my interview tomorrow but the blasted snow terrorists have closed all the airports. Outrageous. And annoying.

OMG.
I think I just spoke to the nicest person on earth.
That interview was just WOW. :D

Interview with the co-director of international admissions this weekend… hmm…

^High risk, high reward!

Yes… direct, that is for sure. Anyone with a similar experience/idea of what it could be for?

Sorry if this sounds a little cynical, but is there anyone on this thread who thinks their interview DIDN’T go well? Because I never think my interviews go well …

When I left my interview, I thought it went pretty well. I was very happy with it and still am. Some of the accounts on this thread, where students end up talking about international politics and what not in their interviews, have scared me a bit though. My interview certainly didn’t get that deep, and I hope that isn’t needed to be considered a great interview.

Out of curiosity, if you are deferred, will you always receive a RD interview (when possible)? Or would it depend on if you had an SCEA interview?

^I doubt they they would give you another interview.

If I get deferred, would I get an interview? I didn’t get one in the RD round, but my friends from the same school who did SCEA all did.

Then again, it’s entirely possible that I got rejected already, and they didn’t want to waste their time especially with alumni interviewers in short supply, which is why I didn’t get an interview. Hmmm.

I haven’t gotten an interview yet, which is why I’m asking.
You mean didn’t get one in the SCEA round right Nikkor?

Yeah, I meant SCEA. Apologies about that typo.

No worries, just a bit confused.

I had my interview a while back, 3 weeks I think. We had coffee after school and she was the nicest person EVER. I was really freaking out beforehand but I really enjoyed it. We talked for about 2 hours on well…basically everything. It was very comfortable and I’m hoping that’s a good sign. (My counselor and my friends all assure me that yes it was, but as the days get closer, I get more worried…)

Does anyone else wonder if the interviewers ever check these threads? It might not be to hard for them to figure out who is who. Don’t know if that’s good or bad, I’m just saying…

My interview was exactly like celestialteapot’s, and about 3 weeks ago as well.

I was wondering, much much can this interview help, like what do interviewers report? I haven’t been able to find answers from many places.
