The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

“One other thing: we have the Fed printing but other central bankers are printing too.”

Yes… I think that is the number one factor for stock markets prices…

I was assigned on my short aapl 440 calls so the 435-440 call spread worked out.

Of course, aapl closed after hours close to 441 so it would I probably would have been financially better off if I wasn’t assigned (sold aapl at 440 after receiving the premium on the calls). But hey, my risk is now lower. :)

Hedge fund fees are tough to handle.

Looks like hedge funds are “killing the goose that laid the golden egg”

That’s funny DocT. I’m scanning the various investment picks by the money managers at Barron’s 2013 Roundtable. One of Schafer’s pick is WU which looks interesting with a 3.70% div.

I think this is the only thing I’ve had in common with Buffet - my largest holding is the combo of the VOO S&P ETF and 500 Index Admiral fund (before I knew what an ETF was). I had a pretty horrendous record when I actually picked individual stocks/options (I would have been the guy who sold 500 AAPL puts last week and felt happy for a day after it zoomed up to the low 500s), so I ought to be really happy.

"(I would have been the guy who sold 500 AAPL puts last week and felt happy for a day after it zoomed up to the low 500s), so I ought to be really happy."

Wow. That would have been really ugly…
You ought to be happy you didn’t do that.

Edit: why did wu blow up last year?

Ok… I looked it up…

This is what Schafer said at the roundtable:

After listening to the shows this morning, I think its wise to buy some protection.

I think wu is interesting. We were forced to use it recently to get money into another country, and the fees were quite high.

It looks like wu is going to have declining revenues and maybe declining earnings. Usually, I don’t like that. But the stock has been crushed…

Might be worth a flyer. If WU can keep that buyback going for several years, there won’t be much stock left.

I have to stop buying three twins organic ice cream. Just ate a pint and I am trying to keep my weight down. :)

I am long protection…the spy mar 143 puts. Not working too well. And as spy rallies, the protection isn’t that great. 143 puts are getting farther and farther out of the money.

I keep selling the weeklys against the marches but its a slow decline, a slow loss anyway.

Protection is very cheap right now. Isn’t free though.

I wonder if there’s any demand for tea ice. Kind of like Italian Ices but made with tea and no sugar.

BTW, Berkshire is up 10% this year. What’s really strange is the volume bars. It’s just so-so volume but a lot of price action - it’s kind of like the rest of the market.

I think the following is a very good link for those that have invested in bonds.

“I wonder if there’s any demand for tea ice. Kind of like Italian Ices but made with tea and no sugar.”

I would like that. I usually have a pitcher of cold tea in the refridgerator. Lipton makes cold tea bags. I would like tea ice.

Edit…I guess I could just make tea ice. I guess I will.

I think we should start a hypothetical CC Index fund comprised of stocks and see what happens at the end of year. Just to provide a good laugh at eoy.

More nonsense…

If a market can be manipulated, it will be manipulated.

Well…you snooze, you lose.

I wanted to buy aapl call spread this morning, but I slept thru the opening. Aapl is up 10 bucks. I don’t see anything awesome. I guess I will do nothing.

I wanted to buy something else today. It’s lower. I should want to buy it more because it is a 2 year play, but now I am not so sure.

Hmmmmmm…

We may see AAPL recover and the $INDU-$SPX/$COMPQ divergence reverse.
