The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

Nice trade.

We found out the reason aapl dropped yesterday?

This came out this morning: [StreetInsider.com - Robertson’s Tiger Management Exits Large Apple (AAPL) Stake in Q1](<a href="Robertson's Tiger Management Exits Large Apple (AAPL) Stake in Q1)

I don’t know why this would necessarily impact the stock considering Robertson is a dinosaur. I’m not even sure if he runs this anymore. Its probably a confluence of factors including the dimwit who says that aapl is worth $240 a share. I will probably be back in this at some point.

Meanwhile I need to figure out what to do with my 6/22 goog 820 - 910 calls. Goog went up a bit faster than I thought. The max profit for this spread has not been reached even though goog hit 911 but I’m nervous with such a runup to hold onto it.

Haswell is available for pre-order. Looks like they are shipping at the end of the month. I may consider upgrading my notebook to Haswell if Apple puts it into a nice package.

I saw the Robertson story…I don’t believe Robertson is that much of a factor plus it is old news.

I am counting on people like you upgrading, BCEagle91.

I have to control myself a little. It is easy to succomb to impulses to trade bigger and bigger as the market rallies. Then if the market reverses…echhhh.

Or is this going to be a 1999? If So, then trading bigger for awhile makes sense.

I think investor sentiment is turning more and more positive.

I think goog is hurting aapl.

Google just announced that they are adding the Samsung Galaxy S4 to their Nexus program. $650 for the handset and it’s unlocked and easy to root. I may get one for my wife if it can be used internationally. I’ll have to ask my son if he’s interested too. The difference in Google branding is that you don’t get the crap that the manufacturers and phone companies add and you get update when Google releases them; you don’t have to wait for the phone companies to update them - sometimes they never update them.

BCEagle91, your post shows there is a problem with aapl.

It also shows Apple’s advantage. GOOG has an apps deficiency but they are compensating with much better hardware. I prefer the iPhone because there are apps that I use regularly that aren’t available on Android and it doesn’t appear that that will be changing anytime soon. I would entertain getting an Android device for my wife, though, because it would give her connectivity where she otherwise wouldn’t have it.

An anecdote that relates to your link… I just talked to a friend that owns a retail store that caters to the poor and lower middle class. He says his customers are in worse shape than last year and profits are down slightly.

He also said upscale retailers are doing great. I guess that is obvious.

Doct, I see you are doing better with both aapl and goog working out.

…

Musk must really like his company. The stock is up another 7 bucks in the aftermarket as I write this.

Time to short TSLA?

Because I like to look at both sides…

Wow! I’m actually up on my intc calls - $43!

:)…

I think it is too early for me to figure out how much I am up.

I may not end up… Up. :)

The problem with analysis like this is that it doesn’t put any numbers on the table outside of those at the gross level. Let’s say that PC shipments decline by 15%. Intel’s variable costs decline 50% every two years with new process generations as they can fit twice as many transistors onto the same wafer with successive generations. They are also working on 450 mm wafers (current industry use is 300 mm) so that they can be more efficient there too. I don’t know the progress of the migration to 450 mm wafers. 2013 is the year when Intel’s Atom chip substantially overtakes ARM in performance. I think that 2012 was parity. Parity isn’t enough to unseat the incumbent though. The analysis on Intel’s mobile chips needs to factor in what the margins are as Atom chips are far smaller than Intel’s PC chips so they are far cheaper to manufacture.

I don’t have these numbers. I have seen them over the years but I don’t have anything current. The PC market is supposed to rebound later this year with new designs which may be more compelling than last year. It looks like Retina displays will be popular this year. I think that cheap is still the operative word in desktops.

Some companies are experimenting with Chrome and Android laptops. I saw one today that could boot Android or Windows (Intel processor). There’s going to be more experimentation but I don’t think that ARM is going to get traction in this market. I also think that Windows RT is going to die. Dell sharply reduced the price on their Windows RT device yesterday.

So Intel has to get the job done on mobile. I think that the big thrust in 2013 will be in tablets starting this summer. They are getting design wins on phones outside the US. We had better see Intel-powered phones in early 2014.

I don’t own Intel stock right now so I’m just an onlooker. We have a semi-insider that posts here from time to time. It would be nice to have another view.

I got $3K in dividends today from PBA. Of course I then had to pay withholding taxes on it.

You can make a million bucks in the stock market.

Of course that doesn’t make you a millionaire - because the government(s) are going to take a pound of flesh.

Well…in your case BCEagle91, two federal govts to deal with…echhh.

I know the intl analysis is far from perfect, but it does make me think about how aggressive I want to get.

I also may change my style pretty soon…

I might get less aggressive selling puts…

Unlike doct, I think there is a lot of risk selling puts and I am getting tired.

Aapl wasn’t helping me any today. :)
