The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

You can have your million dollars and Ill keep my $43!

Lol…

I’m going to have a whopper of a capital gain when I sell PBA. It would be nice if I never had to sell it. Unfortunately we’ll have a good crash sooner or later.

If pba was a better option stock I would tell you to look at the puts. I guess I am saying that.

I don’t remember the tax ramifications of using puts. I think if the puts expire worthless you can’t write off the loss as long as you have a capital gain in the stock.

I don’t know how buying puts changes the tax holding period of the stock.

And if you make money in the puts…those gains will be short term…

So maybe this isn’t a great idea.

Just thinking out loud…

I looked into writing calls for PBA a while ago. It wasn’t worth it. It might be worth it if I held them in the TSE but I really don’t want to open an account in Canada. The US volume in PBA just isn’t that good.

You are right. The volume is too low to trade.

And if you sell calls and they end up in the money, the owner of the calls may exercise the calls for the dividend. Then you would have to pay taxes on the stock gain.

What is the stock volume of pba in Canada per day?

From my standpoint, I would go much longer if the market got that 10% drop that I want, then I could easily envision making a million relatively easily with options. I’m not comfortable with this market and I guess neither are a lot of other people, that’s why it keeps going up.

Easily? I am going to copy you doct…

Actually the fact that this discussion is occurring not just here but at work etc., is disturbing.

Hey…I am not the one saying it is easy to make 1 million trading options. Lol You are going to have to step up your size.

Are people talking about the stock market at work? More than they used to?

It’s odd but the traders at work are out of the market while the buy and hold folks are doing fine. One guy that got out near the top before the crash never got back in again. He would have been better off just staying in.

Pba on tse is about 500k shares per day. Much better than in the US but way less than my typical stock.

People are talking less about the market because they are not in it. I think that people are really annoyed that it keeps going up. Even the bullish are very uneasy.

500k shares a day…that is kind of low…

Interesting stories about the people in your office, BCEagle91. The traders are out…hmmmm…

Buy and hold is winning…Wow…

I just talked to my aunt and my mom about stocks this past weekend. They didn’t sell in 2009, but they have no confidence in the stock market. Actually another friend just told me the same thing last week. He thinks the stock market game is rigged.

I don’t see enthusiasm for the stock market in my limited world. Even the young people I know don’t seem that enthralled with the stock market.

A lot of people I know are talking about it. Of course a lot of them have been investing for up to 40 years so they are quite experienced. I don’t see a recession on the way anytime soon. If we got a 10% correction, I would put a large junk of my money into ditm spy calls and not even bother with individual stocks.

Ok… So we can finally get rid of this ecri guy. Good.

Well… You buy 666 calls… The calls rally 15 dollars.

You make your million.

If it costs $5 for the calls… You are risking $333,000.

$333,000 may be a low number. May be a high number depending on the person and what he or she wants to accomplish.

Ok I’ll bite. What are 666 calls? The devil calls?

Lol… I just had that number in my mind. I guess the devil has taken me over.

I just looked and the 166 calls in spy that expire in sept are 5 bucks. That is pretty good. Lol

I was thinking of 1000 calls and a 10 dollar gain, but then we are risking 1 million bucks…

I think if I was younger, my advice would be to trade more aggressively. Lol

You are getting the older me. Sorry.

I should not discourage you. So… Go for it as long as you can handle the losses. Some people can handle the losses.

To start a trade long 33,300 deltas in the spy might be a hell of a rush.

AAPL found support yesterday at the 50% Fibonacci Retracement level. There seems to be some support from a few months ago around $418-$420. The volume of the move down concerns me though. The next support level is around $413. I don’t plan to try playing the bounce unless I can get a better technical signal than just Fibonacci levels.
