The investment..speculation, out right gambling thread

Nobody cares about the aapl show next week?

Times have changed…

[Apple’s Upcoming Products - Is It Time To Buy? - Seeking Alpha](<a href=“Apple's Upcoming Products - Is It Time To Buy? (NASDAQ:AAPL) | Seeking Alpha”>Apple's Upcoming Products - Is It Time To Buy? (NASDAQ:AAPL) | Seeking Alpha)

I don’t see too many facts in that piece. The writer pushes intc though so he is ok by me. Lol

[Analyst: Intel Atom chip outperforms Nvidia, Qualcomm and Samsung | TG Daily](Analyst: Intel Atom chip outperforms Nvidia, Qualcomm and Samsung – TGDaily)

"I don’t see too many facts in that piece. The writer pushes intc though so he is ok by me. Lol "

What article are you referring to - I don’t see any mention of intc in the apple article

TLT trades inverse to interest rates. As rates go up TLT should go down. I shorted TLT several years ago when it was 105 as the advisor at the time said to short it. It went to 125 or near there as I recall. Painful.

I am happy to read that story, BCEagle91.

Intc was downgraded today by an analyst. The intc price target was lowered to 20. Since I am not planning on buying more intc at these levels I wasn’t too ecstatic to read that report.
Lol

There are rumors that intc chips are going to be in a couple of mac computers and this might be announced at the aapl show next week.

That would be nice.

Anyway… This is a gambling thread…
Maybe there is some positive news coming out of the aapl show… I have to admit aapl’s stock isn’t acting like it.

So… Small bet…
I bought 2 appl 450 calls that expire next week. Sold 3 460 calls. Bought 1 470 call…

Cost was approximately 375 plus commissions of a little over 20 bucks… Let’s say cost was 400.

At 460 the trade is worth 2000 at expiration. Profit would be about 1600.
Above 460 the potential profits decrease 100 each point up with a maximum decrease of 1000 so if aapl is above 470 the trade makes about 600 bucks.

I am short some intc calls that are expiring worthless and short some that expire next week. I am holding some intc for 2 to 3 years, but some intc I am going to trade as I said earlier.

"TLT trades inverse to interest rates. As rates go up TLT should go down. I shorted TLT several years ago when it was 105 as the advisor at the time said to short it. It went to 125 or near there as I recall. Painful. "

I know this. I don’t understand why interest rates went up. The rationale before was that they were going up because of qe tapering which also impact equities. The job number today put to rest immediate tapering in a lot of people.

I do not want to hype intc. My position is a bet. I do not have a huge percentage of my money in this stock. The stock is not a high flyer. I doubt the stock is going to make people rich.

However, I like this link. When this link is clicked on There are links below this one that I like less. At least one link I like less anyway.

[Sony Takes Fight To Apple On Battery Front With Intel’s Haswell - Forbes](<a href=“Sony Takes Fight To Apple On Battery Front With Intel's Haswell”>Sony Takes Fight To Apple On Battery Front With Intel's Haswell)

I will buy a new Haswell Retina MacBook Pro next week if Apple does a launch. I have some performance analysis that I want to do with my daughter to publish a paper and it would be helpful to have a Haswell system to do it. Apparently there aren’t any benchmarks to show Haswell Vector performance compared to Ivy Bridge yet and I’d like to get something written and out there. The goal is to use AVX and AVX2 hardware enhancements in Firefox. I’m a bit surprised that nobody has already done this given that Sandy Bridge has been out for two years.

I was considering building a Haswell system as Newegg has the chips and motherboards but I’d like to be able to do this outside of home and a laptop would allow me to do that. BTW, this is a relatively expensive undertaking. I think that the laptop would be about $2,200 and I’d need a Windows 7 license. I couldn’t get Mozilla to build on Windows 8. Windows 8 is a lot cheaper than Windows 7 (because Windows 8 is a piece of crap). This is the sort of thing that I do for fun.

The rumors on the Haswell RMBPs (actually all of the MBPs) is that they will be thinner and lighter because of Haswell’s lower power requirements meaning smaller batteries. RMBPs are already quite thin.

One of the new Vaios is under 2 pounds with a HD screen. That’s probably too small for me and I like at least 1920x1200 which is why I’d go for the MacBook Pro. Sony isn’t the only company that can take advantage of Haswell’s lower power consumption.

I think that it would be cool to have an Intel tablet that could dual boot Windows or Android. Extra bonus points if it can also boot Mac OS X.

I sold my intc options.

JMO, intc is in a tough spot. Haswell is a wonderfull chip line, the most advance and sophisticated complex cpu in the market today. But it barely outperforms Ivy Bridge, and the power savings are great but since it is so advanced, it has to cost a lot more and it’s sweet spot is in the higher priced laptops/notebooks. So for desktop customers, this is not a compelling upgrade. Chasing lower volume higher end is not what you build your very own multi billion dollars FAB for. Meanwhile for the foreseeable future, ARM is going to do well in android tablets and handsets. We’ll see if Atom can make a big dent or not.

I think 175K is a good number and means economic growth and no summer swoon. I think the fed will taper if we keep getting 175K months and, thus interest rates will continue stepping upwards. That’s not stopping me from buying dividend growing stocks, however.

Haswell is a worthwhile upgrade if you are running Nehalem or earlier and you want to lower your power consumption or get something faster. The typical user is probably fine going back to Merom though. I run my realtime charts on a Merom laptop and performance is fine. The machine does get a bit more than warm though. My home desktops are Merom and Nehalem and I would like to get power consumption down but they both have enough computer power for what I do.

I think that Atom becomes compelling with Bay Trail which is end of 2013. I think that Atom leapfrogs at 14 nm which should be sometime in 2014. I think that Intel will be doing Atom before PC at some point. I don’t recall if it’s at 14 nm or smaller.

And then there’s this:

“A Chinese supercomputer known as Tianhe-2 has been measured at speeds of 30.65 petaflops, or 74 percent faster than the current holder of the world’s-fastest-supercomputer title. … Tianhe-2 is built with Intel Ivy Bridge and Xeon Phi processors. “There are 32,000 Intel Ivy Bridge Xeon sockets and 48,000 Xeon Phi boards for a total of 3,120,000 cores,””

[Chinese supercomputer destroys speed record and will get much faster | Ars Technica](<a href=“June | 2013 | Ars Technica”>Chinese supercomputer destroys speed record and will get much faster | Ars Technica)

BTW, went long GE but I should have bought double the shares that I bought. It’s a potential breakout (closing price); if it can just hold at or above these levels for the next 12 minutes …

A big part of the jobs number today is temporary and part-time jobs. The quality of the jobs created this year looks pretty poor when you dig into the details. Still, more jobs are better than no jobs.

I agree on divy stocks. I picked up some PSEC too.

ttparent,

Thanks for your views. I like to read positive and negative views about companies. I prefer positive views when I own a stock. lol

Really, I want to know what is going on with a company or its products and if things are negative then I want to know the negative. So thanks.

Articles that have no real substance and talk about where a stock price is going don’t do much for me.

A rather interesting problem for Haswell desktop chips: they have a new low-power state where it uses 0.6 Watts instead of 6.0 Watts in sleep. Some power supplies will do a system reset at this power consumption level. A workaround is to disable the low-power state.

The companies that make power supplies are moving to support the new power state power level but it’s not clear which products will support it. I assume that the laptop manufacturers are already supporting it as battery life is a much bigger deal on mobile devices.

Can anyone tell me why the Nikkei is acting like the stock market from some bizarre third world nation?

Huge corporate tax cut announced in Japan last night.

Apple only announced Haswell in MacBook Air models today. I’m disappointed. They better get the other models upgraded soon. I guess that they actually have time to do this. I read that Windows doesn’t have code for the really low-power sleep state yet. It’s easier for Apple as they do the OS and the hardware. I do like the MacBook Air but the screen isn’t good enough for development work.
