Another reason to go for and then turn down the scholarship is the leverage it provides in negotitating up a financial package at the school they wanted all along? Or, perhaps collecting scholarship offers provides resume bolstering? It sounds like Chess sometimes, does it not?

“On the bright side for all those still waiting, tomorrow is Sunday and there is no mail delivery at all! Enjoy and Cheers to all.”

I really don’t mean to imply anything negative, but I just burst out laughing when I saw this, because I had this vivid image of Mr. Dursley in the first Harry Potter movie (or book, but I suppose when I think of images I see the scene from the film) popping a cookie in his mouth and exclaiming (paraphrase warning): “I love Sunday! You know why that is, don’t you…No post on Sundays!”

Don’t mean to make light of anyone who still has their fingers crossed; I hope USPS comes through with good news soon!

nope, nothing! although it is a bit soon for that, i think. i did get a confirmation e-mail that my resume/pic/consent form which i e-mailed were received, though.

and yes, you shouldn’t take everything at face value on the internet. i’ve gotten bad advice on here before, even (which so many people take as law), although i REALLY think the group is legit.

@CCS: lucky him! he loved it, hopefully? did hopkins not come through with enough aid?

Tres E–He was not accepted at J.H. He has done extremely well there, and is continuing on to grad school next year. Imagine, there is probably someone sitting at J.H. for whom Yale was their first choice! Just proves that you only have so much control over what happens in this process; you just have to have keen judgment and embrace the opportunity that best fits your goals.

I’ve registered online and have yet to receive a response or tentative travel plans, as well. It is probably far too early for them to get back to all of us–I think our excitement makes time pass a lot more slowly than it should!

Also, I’ve emailed a pic and resume (though not yet the consent form–I’m unsure of how, exactly, to email that with signatures, so I’ll probably fax it) and have not received confirmation for that either.

Well, we are in Georgia and still have neither letter regarding the Johnston Scholarship, so misery loves company LOL…I guess one will be here Monday. We did, however, receive a form letter postmarked the 25th from the financial aid office describing all their programs. :-/

can anyone tell me more about what the three days are like? how intense are the interviews? will we have much down time to experience parties and the general social life on campus? i mean, i know we’ll have some down time, i am just looking for some more insight.

I haven’t heard anything about the Johnson yet either. I’d say it’s pretty safe to assume that since we haven’t gotten the email invitations, we didn’t make it.

Congrats to all the JSFs and best wishes for a wonderful campus experience! Just got back from a long snowy weekend in LexVegas. Another fun and quintessentially W&L visit. The Colonnade is truly magnificent in the snow!

And thanks, fellow W&Lers, for explaining what I meant about the low cost of living at W&L – better than I did, for sure ;)

Daughter received “non-finalist” letter today in snowy western NY. All I can say is that there must be extremely strong competition for this scholarship-and for good reason. Not many merit scholarships around like this one! Now W&L becomes a viable option, but has a lot of competition for a valedictorian with a 2250, student body president, captain of cross-country team that took second in state meet and recognized singer and clarinet player. Lots of interest from great schools for my daughter-but no full rides like this one! Congratulations to the finalists-I’m sure you will show them your best!

so i contacted the Johnson Scholarship contact at W+Lee and he apologized that i received the facebook invite before the letter, but he did say I was a finalist. (:

DARUNNER, your daughter obviously has great credentials and for her to not be named a finalist, underscores what a difficult job the admissions department had. I hope you’ll still consider W&L for your daughter as it’s a fantastic school. My son attended the 2008 Johnson competition and fell in love with the school during his three day visit. He’s now a sophomore at W&L and has never second-guessed his decision to attend. My daughter attends OLM in Brighton.
I’m assuming that your daughter is from P-M based on your cross-country state runnerup comment. HF-L and Mendon were the only teams in this area with that designation. Good luck to your daughter with the college decision process; I’m sure she’ll pick a wonderful school.

Thanks Mcknight-my daughter loved W&L when we visited this past summer and their XC coach was great! Such a beautiful campus! We are actually from MG H.S., Section 6 for sports-near the PA border. We also know some alumni, both of the college and the law school. We are keeping W&L in mind still-but it will run into some competition from the northeast at this point. W&L was so asthectically beautiful that it distracted my daughter from some of her first loves in college choices, including Columbia-now she’s focusing back on some of those first choices. We will figure it out one step at a time.

Good luck to everyone who is going to W&L in March! Unfortunately, my young adult will not be attending the first choice, since without the scholarship, we can’t afford it. Very sad, but chins have been raised, and we’re excited to see what God has planned! Out of 12 schools applied to, 3 are now out of the running (2 just didn’t like anymore). Eight more will be knocked out of the competition one way or the other by the end of April.
Again, congrats!
