The Johnson Scholarship Program

Has anyone received the denial letter? My daughter hasn’t received either one. What did the denial letter say?

my child has not gotten anything either. has everyone with a favorable letter been notified?? when do the rejection letters come in ?

210 finalist letters were sent out on Monday, January 25.
Almost 2000 “rejection” letters were sent out on Tuesday, January 26.
W&L has a fantastic blog in which the admissions officers do a great job keeping everyone (parents and prospective students) in the loop.

I haven’t received any info from the mail; but i was added to the facebook group Johnson Scholarship Finalists by W+Lee

I take this that I made it?

@greg: yes.

well this was quite unexpected (:

thanks Tres

@greg. I am sorry, I do not think the advice you received is correct. It might be…might not. There are 69 current members. My child got the letter, and nothing about facebook was mentioned in it, nor has she been asked to join that group. not saying it is meaningful either way, but I think it would be best for you to wait for the letter before getting your hopes up.

^the johnson FB group is an official one, made by an admissions officer in the W&L network. it was created after letters were sent, hence the lack of notification on the letters. i think it’s pretty safe to assume. yes, you should wait for your finalist letter to be SURE.

dadwonders, your D wasn’t invited to the FB group? is her name extremely common, or does she use her first and middle name for her FB name? i find it strange that she wasn’t invited. i think they must have searched each of us out and invited us individually, since my personal e-mail is different than my college correspondence e-mail.

@tres Ele

Not really sure if her application email matches her facebook email.
Our name is uncommon enough that she would be ‘find-a-ble’ if someone were looking, although it might take a few moments.

Also, did not mean to be-smirch your good name (and advice)…But already I have seen on at least one other college page a warning about fake facebook pages. Nothing more important in the process than the actual letter with web page registration link! :)

Curious question for all though…My kid occasionally posts something on FB that might not be the most favorable thing…(ex: I HATE AP CALC…or something like that…) or a video of her singing (badly)…or tagged photos of her in a bed with 6 people.

Any paranoia about the school having a FB page/group? Just wondering…

(FYI: In my case, I am not worried about it…Her photos, status updates and friends comments say more about her than any application could. Even the bad stuff is “her”.)

The FB issue: D was an ED1 admit and it was on the W&L website that topic of legit FB for W&L class of 2014 came to our attention. W&L policy appears to be, as far as admit info, that they do not email anything–they will FAX something but never email. I cannot imagine that the policy for JSFs is too different–and if it is then it appears the shortcut would be for applicants to test whether they are admitted to the FB site (?).

Of interest, some of last year’s finalists swore that if they were awarded one they were going to choose W&L b/c they loved it, et al. Turns out when you see where they went, none of the three took W&L up on the award. I think they use the forum to create an impression. It is easy to search the CC id name and peruse some of the posts that person has made on other CC forums.

anybody hear either way fr california? i think i should get notice today if i got in kinda worried because i didnt get invited to the fb group. But my name is really common, email is different from the one i applied with and from a large city so whoo knows :/

@CCS502: Where did the 3 you mention end up?

Dadwonders-I believe it was Yale, Alabama, and Wellsley at which they matriculated. Under the “guynameded” I think most of this discussion took place. Also, the only FB contact for the class of 2014 was via the website for W&L–where they caution about fake ones. There was no email or mention of it in the letter. I would suspect, as you mentioned, that they handle the JSFs similarly???

CCS: i noticed that last year also! guynameded said something like, “even if i get into yale or harvard tomorrow, i’ll still probably take up W&L on its offer,” but in the end the temptation of yale must have been too great. :slight_smile: we aren’t as anonymous on this website as we’d sometimes like to think. that’s why i generally stay away from certain HSL threads and think personal threads like “share your secrets!” or “are you a virgin?” are ill-advised.

my name is pretty uncommon, but my e-mail for facebook differs from my college e-mail. so i don’t know? think they searched me out. there hasn’t been much activity in the group yet, though.

I sent the person in charge an email about it all. Hopefully I’ll here back soon.

@j1s2nb1rn3s: We’re in CA too. Nothing in the mail here. Still hoping…I guess there’s still Monday!

@Greg: I hope for your sake that i am wrong and Tres is right, but beware what you read on the internet. (Even if Tres is a reliable source)

@CCS: Thanks…We (wife and i) spent hours saying “why would anyone turn that down”, and we came to conclusion that it would have to be either an Ivy, an athletic scholarship, someone not wanting to be that far from home, or a bad boyfriend/girlfriend decision.

thanks dadwonders

and i meant hear* in my previous post -___-

Alas, no mail in our neck of the woods; I must admit we are relieved that CA has nothing too. It seems as though the mail just froze somewhere. We did find a site that showed that a Lexington post would travel first to Washington DC if headed to our zipcode. Amazing what the mind can rationalize!

Tres E–I have a nephew who is graduating from Yale this Springdebt free. Ironically, his first choice was Johns Hopkins.

On the bright side for all those still waiting, tomorrow is Sunday and there is no mail delivery at all! Enjoy and Cheers to all.
