didn’t get a dime luckily several other fine LACs have been generous.
congrats to all the Johnsons!

i wonder if we are getting any more details on the specifics of the scholarship and how its distributed…or was that letter just it?

ib612: That letter was pretty much it. You got the whole meal deal! Congratulations. You will eventually get paperwork from Financial Aid showing the scholarship and I seem to remember you will have to sign that. Grade-wise, I think a 3.0, is your target without going below in 2 of 3 consecutive reporting periods. This information will be mailed to you, but not immediately. I take it you are planning to be a W&L student. It is a wonderful school. As to the distribution of how many students, stats, etc., I think it was reported last year in a blog or the newspaper, but not mailed directly to you.

does anyone plan on turning down the johnson this year? If so, for what school?

My son might, he has a good offers from UMich and Hillsdale, waitlisted at Harvard.

About specifics, the financial aid letter talks about what the money is used for and I talked to someone in admissions who said $49,137 covers tuition, fees, room and board, and the other approx. $5,000 is books and personal expenses (including travel.)
Oh, and you have to maintain a 3.3 GPA to keep the scholarship, it sounds to me like each semester they check.

I am taking the Johnson and turning down full rides to Notre Dame, Univ. Miami, Tulane, and turning down other schools. Hope to see you all next year!

$25,000 at ND, $22,00 at Miami are not full rides. Tulane doesn’t offer full ride either, except for athletes and 2 students from Louisiana.

None-the-less, congrats on the Johnson. Can’t beat going to school for free.

ND gave me $30,000 and I meant full ride for all three schools in the sense that with financial aid I would not have to take out any loans or pay anything out of pocket and would be able to go “for free.”

Not trying to confuse anyone looking for scholarships to those schools.

ib612 - My friend is turning down the Johnson to attend Swarthmore (with generous need-based aid).

it is quite a lucrative award, i was actually planning on investing a large chunk of that “personal expenses” money, but unfortunately im turning it down for princeton (costing 5 k a year)…im gonna miss W & L, it really is a great school

I visited W&L this past Spring. I absolutely love it. I’m in contact with the tennis coach, I want to put out my credentials to get some feedback on weather I sound like a student that could get the Johnson Scholarship.

670 Math, 700 CR, 660 Writing. Top 10% of my class of 430 students. Heavily involved student council, state association of stu. councils, humongous school charity drive. 5+ clubs including NHS, and Beta Club. I am starting two programs this summer, with the help of Furman university to help at risk children, and promote environmentally friendly practices at sporting events. Both are designed by me, and will be led by me. Both my parents are Turkish immigrants, I am the first person in my family born in America.

I know its hard to judge, but I’d appreciate any feedback, my test scores could be better (I’m taking SAT subject tests in a few weeks), but I am extremely involved, passionate for the environment, and a true leader.

Whether* :)

Not to be ugly, but if going to W&L is dependant on your getting the Johnson, you probably need to consider alternatives. I cannot speak for the school, but from what I saw they are looking at the top 5% in rank, top 5% in SAT, huge involvement in the community, and good AP and subject test scores. Some aspects of your background are great, some wanting a bit. Cast a wide net and check out other schools as well, that offer significant aid. Also, you might want to check out “Questbridge”, it seems a lot of those kids got the chance at the Johnson (if you qualify financially).

MrQuestion, I personally think you have a chance, but obviously it is hard to get a Johnson and it depends on a lot of factors. I received a Johnson with SAT scores slightly better than yours and a lot of AP exams. They asked a lot about my community service and extra-curriculars. There were kids at the competition with perfect SAT scores who I met that didn’t get a Johnson. It’s all relative. But definitely apply, and if you are low-income definitely look into Questbridge. I got into a bunch of schools through it and its how I discovered W&L. : )

Thanks everyone, I just wanted to make sure my scores weren’t that much of a limiting factor to me. we’ll see how it goes. I realize that it is all relative and dependent on lots of separate factors.

To get the Johnson, it’s much easier if you are a low income minority. I got it because i had that working for me (ORM though) in addition to a 1460/1600, ranked #1, great EC’s, and a stellar interview. When they’re giving you that much money, you better be damn brilliant.

I had so many factors working in my favor to get the Johnson though, in fact I was so low income that if they hadn’t given me the Johnson I would’ve been getting only 2K less a year with need based aid. With my credentials and circumstances, the Johnson was basically a given for me. Ultimately, it’s about what the school is looking for.

For those of you who won the Johnson, do you remember when the essay topics became available? Are they posted online or do you have to submit a paper application? Just wondered whether it was possible to begin working on essays over the summer.

Thanks!

how many international students receive this scholarship ? how many international students were finalists?

If I remember correctly, three internationals, maybe four? Costa Rica, France, Egypt (but the distance was too far to get flown over), and maybe Japan.
