The Kevin Spacey Thread

So the article liked in post #98 indicates 8 more allegations of sexual assault/harassment most of which were made by men. Will there be the same skepticism, claims of exaggerated charges, outright lying or looking for a big settlement that are leveled at women when they report sexual harassment or assault?

Or is this a stereotype reserved for women who report?

@HarvestMoon1 ,

Do you find anyone here saying that HW (you know you have become famous, or infamous, when you can use initials and everyone knows who you are talking about) is innocent, or Cosby? If there is one accusation or two it is right to be skeptical. But an avalanche cannot be ignored.

It doesn’t matter what the official dictionary term for it. Pursuing sexual relations with a 14 yr old boy who looks 10 when you yourself are in your 20s is creepy and disgusting.

@hebegebe HW basically admitted it so I would not expect there to be the usual crucifixion of the accusers. How about all the women who accused DJT? They certainly were not spared. Nor were the women who accused BC. Cosby has been more of a mixed bag --plenty of skepticism and classification of the accusers as “gold diggers” in the comment sections of the press reports.

I am going to bet that there is little questioning of the men making claims of sexual assault or harassment.

@tucsonmom my question is why is the accusation by a male being taken at face value, while since the beginning of time women who make an accusation have been accused of lying or seeking revenge?

The interesting thing, to me, is how the men saying they were harassed as young men seem to react similarly to the women. The ones who have reported don’t seem to have just shaken it off.

Someone said, of sexual harassment, “If you can’t handle some of the basic stuff that’s become a problem in the workforce today, you don’t belong in the work force. You should go maybe teach kindergarten,” representing the view of many that being sexually harassed is a minor nothing, like stubbing one’s toe. But both women and men who are harassed seem to find it awful, not something that can be easily forgotten.

Sexual assault or harassment is an attack on a person’s dignity and suggests they are unworthy of the basic respect that is afforded to everyone else. I am going to bet that it is not something that is easily intellectually processed by recipients whether male or female. It would not be something that most would want to advertise.

They probably carry it with them and when they get angry enough they go public if the opportunity presents itself.

I posted the story that my daughter shared on Facebook in the “Are You A Part of This?” Thread. Now some local reporter who read the post wants to include her story in his article about local female musicians. She’s extremely reluctant to do this, because she told her story in her own way, and has experience with being misquoted. She feels like this particular reporter is an opportunist who will sensationalize her experience for click-bait. It’s important for people to tell their stories, but it’s a press feeding frenzy right now. I hope that these victims are careful.

@HarvestMoon1 , I do remember people bashing the accusers of Jeff Smith, “The Frugal Gourmet.”

@HarvestMoon1, I think Corey Feldman would disagree with your assertion that men are believed when they report crimes of being sexually harassed or sexually assaulted.

There is very much a stigma against men reporting any sort of sexual harassment or sexual abuse. I would argue that there’s even more social pressure against speaking out against it than there is for women to speak out against it when it happens to them.

The social pressure against men speaking out comes mostly from other men. But that is a different thing than people calling them liars, contending the report is revenge for a relationship gone bad or that they are in it for a settlement. I don’t see those accusations being hurled at men. With women those accusations seem to be reflexive.

Barbara Walters dismissed Corey Feldman’s accusations. I don’t think it is a male/female thing. I think every charge needs to be examined on it’s own merit.

NYPD is looking into HW.

Seems like Alec Baldwin is prepping the field for his own revelations.
