The Kevin Spacey Thread

He’s totally out now. I have to confess to feeling sorry for Robin Wright since she did so much for House of Cards. They may continue the series without Spacey.

This really amazed me:

He must have been a problem all along.

Is there going to be anyone left to respect after this is all done with? My husband says that if something comes out about Tom Hanks, he’s lost faith that there’s any good guys left.

I don’t think I can link a YouTube video but google Bill Maher New Rule: Toxic Male Laziness for his take on the subject. Yes, it’s a humorous take on the subject because he’s a comedian and that will always be his way of addressing serious issues.

This is all so disheartening.

Sexism, one expects. This kind of stuff, putting hands down people’s clothing, no.

“Jeff Hoover has ‘full support’ of House Republicans despite sexual harassment claim”

We knew politicians would be the next:

This particular case is with one party, but I feel certain this is not a partisan issue.

Lately there has been an explosion about actions by men in Hollywood. However, the older people among us will remember the defense of Roman Polanski (even fairly recently) and the support for his being able to return to the US without consequences, despite having fled the country (prior to sentencing, I think) in connection with a case involving rape of a 13-year-old. There are other cases of men in Hollywood having gotten away with reprehensible behavior for decades. Harvey Weinstein didn’t start last year. So I can see someone differentiating the response to important people in Hollywood from the response to others. I think that is over now, however.

Actually, I think the Polanski case is quite relevant to this discussion. I looked up the details: Polanski drugged and raped a 13-year-old. He spent about 45 days in a psychiatric facility and then had a plea bargain set up, under which he would be sentenced to time already served and released. He apparently got wind of the fact that the judge had changed his mind, and would not accept the plea bargain. So he left the country before sentencing.

Neither France nor Poland would extradite him to the US. He has received awards and continued to direct films after leaving the country. There are certainly people who defend him.

As far as the judge’s lack of willingness to accept the plea bargain: It is possible that the judge never intended to accept the plea bargain. (Not sure about this.) If he did, and he changed his mind during the time the Polanski was in the psychiatric facility, then I suspect that in the interim, the judge learned something that made him think the original sentence under the plea bargain was completely inappropriate (as it certainly seems to me). What he learned may have had nothing to do with Polanski, per se.

I will never see a Polanski film, having learned about this case. Some of them have been critically acclaimed. I think the critics are way off base.

You can be a good filmmaker and still be a bad man. I won’t see another Polanski movie, nor a Woody Allen one.

You are right, of course, mathmom, but I think that sometimes a person’s actions are so extreme that it is a poor idea to praise his art.

I won’t pay to see any movie now by w Allen, mel g, or a few others. I’m sure none of them miss my meager ticket money, but it makes me feel better.

I doubt that the people that defended Polanski in the past would dare do so now. Attitudes have very rapidly changed about sexual abuse in Hollywood.

@dadoftwingirls - what Barbara Walters did with Corey Feldman was attempt to shut him down. She never accused him of making the claim out of revenge, never called him a liar nor did she ever suggest he was a gold digger looking for a settlement. These are all things hurled at women when they report – it’s the routine “turn the tables” response to deflect from the issue at hand. The problem is now her not the alleged harassment.

All Barbara Walters said to Corey Feldman was “you are damaging an entire industry.” To me that doesn’t even suggest she thought he was not telling the truth. She simply didn’t want anything to do with someone making these claims on a show she was associated with - she didn’t have the confidence or the backbone to address that sort of allegation. She was standing behind the industry that made her.

But let’s be clear she never questioned his allegation, in fact she asked him “are you saying there are pedophiles in Hollywood?” giving him the opportunity to respond affirmatively. Then she backtracked and covered herself for asking the question.

It could be true that people with stop defending Polanski, now that there are three more women who have accused him of assaulting them when they were young. I don’t know how long the statute of limitations runs in these cases. One of the women is German. It will be interesting to see whether Polanski is now extradited to the US, or to Germany. I think that will be telling.

Hollywood is worried that there will be an ‘ick factor’ associated with Spacey, Hoffman and others named, that will further hurt the industry that already did very poorly this summer box office wise.

Good. If protecting and coddling rapists, assaulters and harassers is going to hit the bottom line, maybe the entertainment business will stop doing it. May this move to other industries.

Hmm. When I said a sexual abuser stops at nothing I was totally right. Again.

That Guardian article about the ex-Mossad agents is very disturbing. Very.

Ugh. I just read the The New Yorker article. So gross.

Wow. IMO, that gives a lot of credibility to Rose McGowan’s claims that the airplane drug thing was a set up.
