Let’s not forget that we’re talking about a man was removed from the bench (for the second time) because he order state employees to punish people for having the wrong kind of sexual relationships. He literally used the government to impose his moral judgment on Americans.
I’m usually sympathetic to the FDR argument that people who are bad husbands may serve wisely and honorably in high office. Not with anti-gay crusaders. If you’re persecuting people on the basis of their sexuality, you better have your own house in order. Moore forfeited any right to the benefit of the doubt regarding his own activities.
There is at least one current monarch whose parents’ ages at the time of the monarch’s birth apparently did not conform to this rule. (Neither was underage by any reasonable definition, though.)
Ah, but perhaps he has a difference of opinion. The wrong sort of relationships (apparently to him), are homosexual relationships, not relationships with children of the opposite sex. Now gay pedophiles should be punished, due to this logic, but not heterosexual pedophiles. With that logic, he could feel perfectly okay with his judgments.

I just can’t believe the people who are still backing this man because he is the “bible” candidate. They must be referring to selective parts of the Old Testament. My church always emphasized deeds over creeds.
I’m not entirely sure why one had to be coy about that instead of just saying who it was in the first place.
But anyway, yes, I would vote for a generic Republican over a pedophile. I would vote for 95%+ of Republicans currently in power over a pedophile. If it was pedophile vs someone like Roy Moore though (who believes people like me should be in prison and has actively advocated for it), I would hope that the Ds had it together enough to a write-in campaign for someone else because I couldn’t vote for either of them.
And yes, write-in campaigns can work. Just ask Lisa Murkowsky.
I think what happens sometimes is that people just stay home when confronted by this type of choice where they’d been supporting someone like Moore, especially if it is not a presidential year or is a special election.

Regarding the French president and his wife, he started getting interested at 15 but there was no reciprocity and she managed to help him get into a boarding school for gifted students away in Paris, from where he sent her letters - and she replied, but I assume knowing the letters could be read by boarding school guardians or parents or whoever was in charge of the students. He started pursuing her when he was in college and it’s during college they became a couple, so we can assume he was at least 20 when anything"happened". In the documentaries after his electoral victory they explained how he had to convince her, then his parents, then she wanted to see how her children would deal, etc. They got married when he was 28 I think.
So, very different from the situation involving Roy Moore, who was seemingly preying on distressed teen girls.
(Also, it seems to me there’s been a pattern of holier-than-though men spouting screeds to hide their own turpitude - after Moore was nominated, a comedian said something to the effect “how long till he’s caught with his pants down?”)

Wikipedia supports the version that his parents were trying hard to break up the relationship by shipping him off, and says they were a couple by 18. I believe both parties have claimed they did not violate the age of consent, which is 16 in France.
I wonder how many guys are stressing out now, worrying that their bad behavior will be outed? And I also know there are many women who are still in positions where they can’t complain (like women in graduate programs whose whole careers could go down the drain if they speak up). We still have a ways to go.
