I caught a marathon of the second season of HBO’s The Leftovers that ran before that season’s finale. Thought it was pretty good, so watched the whole second season. I had tried watching the first season when it premiered, and couldn’t get into it. I can’t take animals being harmed, and there was a lot of that in the first season, it seemed. I’m going to try to rewatch the first season, now that I’ve enjoyed the second season. I read that the first season is based on the book, where the second season is original to the show’s developers. Have any of you watched any of this show, and what are your thoughts on it? I read that the third season will be the final one, so anticipating the premier of that to see how the story plays out.
I’ve watched both seasons. It is an interesting show with intelligent writing, even if it does tend to be confusing/weird/impossible to explain.
I think that Justin Theroux is excellent in it and he gets better as the episodes move along. I had never really seen him in anything else and only knew of him as Jennifer Aniston’s significant other. It is a great cast all around.
Several of the episodes, particularly in Season 2, left me gutted. It’s a show that’s ‘fun’ to watch with someone so that you can discuss it afterwards. I watch with one of my Ds. There’s a website, I believe it’s vulture dot com that does some comprehensive recaps and analysis.
This is one of the few shows my husband and I happily watch together. I do, however, describe it as “that show on which nothing good ever happens and is depressing to watch but somehow is really entertaining” to everyone I know. If you enjoy hearing discussions about it there is a good podcast on baldmove.com.
I’m halfway through season 2. I just said last night it’s the most disturbing and creative show I’ve seen. Makes you want whoever wrote it to have a few sessions with a psychiatrist.
I just watched the episode with Pastor Matt and Mary.
I’m guessing we’ll never discover why people disappeared to begin with.
I too found it hard to watch at first but kept at it - I think it is an amazing show. Far too much on-screen violence but I feel that way about TV in general. The concept is so interesting and the cast is excellent. I have less than no interest in yet another police procedural or vampire-fantasy show.
Yep, definitely worth sticking with. I just finished Episode 3 of Season 1, and I’m really glad I’m giving it a chance now. Agree with the comment, Nothing good ever happens and is depressing, but very interested in the characters. Will now watch all episodes in sequence. I taped it off HBO On Demand. Had to wait for some episodes to become available, but I think you can see all of them. My son’s cable up in Minnesota allows him to watch full seasons of most of the HBO shows. We binge watched Band of Brothers during a recent trip there, and was surprised we were able to do that, given the age of the show. Speaking of which, there are a couple of Southland cast members in The Leftovers, as well as The Walking Dead, which adds to our interest in the show. Son and I loved Southland and are so happy to see those actors appearing in other series now.
Been thinking about this today since you posted the topic. To me there are many parallels between the Miracle, TX situation and our world today…people desperately trying to gain entry to an better place - the best place, it seems - and those who are inside just as anxious to keep them out. You can look at how we live, but you can’t stay here. As horrible as Liv Tyler’s character is - there is nothing like the zeal of a convert - the Guilty Remnant somehow hold up a mirror to those who would turn away. I do want to know what the palm reader whispered to her that set her against the town before she joined the GR.
Anyway, fascinating show. Some echoes of Lost (which I loved), not surprisingly with Damon Lindelof involved in writing, but this is even darker.
I’ve just watched Episodes 8 and 9 of the first season of The Leftovers. Great views of the characters before the event. Gives you a much deeper understanding of how the event affected them, but maybe they were heading that way in the first place. So happy I gave the show another chance. Really looking forward to the premier of Season 3, whever that will be.
