Not sure how I feel about it, but I do know that 1) it’s not my life/business and 2) I should look so good at 65!
One million twitter followers in 4 hours - a new record. Clearly people are interested.
It’s the internet- we slice and dice things. She is begging for publicity and discussion. I admired Bruce Jenner as an athlete back in the day, but subsequent life events (way before this)- not so much.
I only had one sports hero.
Ever.
Can she still throw the javelin?
I guess I shouldn’t be surprised that there’d be so many people here taking this occasion to toss all sorts of judgmental crap Jenner’s way. But it’s still disappointing.
Musicprnt, she had breast implants and FFS in March. I’m sure the cover photo is photoshopped as much as any other Vanity Fair cover, but from the short video on Vanity Fair’s website and other photos I’ve seen from the shoot, that’s basically what she looks like. (And I’m not counting you among those being excessively judgmental.)
I won’t dignify the most unpleasant comments with a response, but I will say the following:
TatinG, you have no idea yet if she was negligent or otherwise responsible for that accident or the woman’s death. Despite the rumors and accusations, there’s no evidence whatsoever that she was texting or speeding or doing anything else wrong while driving. And don’t forget that there was a third car at the front of the line that stopped short in front of the woman who was killed, apparently leading Jenner to stop short and hit that woman’s car.
Rockvillemom, whether Caitlyn Jenner has genital surgery someday or not will be her decision – a lot of women can’t afford it (not Jenner’s problem, obviously) or can’t do it for medical reasons, or don’t want it at all – but there’s nothing confusing about her not having had it yet. Under the applicable standards of care, you’re not even supposed to have that kind of surgery until at least one year after social transition. I waited four years. As for the implants, she has the same right to have them as any other woman. The older you are when you start hormones, the less “natural” development you’re likely to get. And I guess in that family, she want’s to fit in! (I had no such lofty standards to meet.) But that’s all her business.
As for the criticism of her name, I’m sure some people would be happier if she had chosen Linda or Brenda or something that’s supposedly more 1949-appropriate, but even women who have names like that are allowed to change them. More importantly, she’s not trying to be “stealth” or keep her history a secret, so what difference does it make? Everyone’s always going to know about her history, so why shouldn’t she choose a name that she’s happy with? At least it wasn’t Jennifer! (“Donna” happened to be one of the 10 most popular girls’ names in the year I was born in the 1950s, but that isn’t the main reason why I picked it. And my situation is very different from Jenner’s anyway; I don’t want people to think there’s anything “unusual” about me unless I tell them.)
Lergnom, Jenner is far and away the most famous person ever to transition. Far more than Lana Wachowski or anyone else I can think of. (Almost nobody knew who Renee Richards was at the time of her transition; she was famous only because of it and because of her effort to play on the women’s tennis tour.) And surely you’re old enough to remember just how famous Jenner was after 1976 (Wheaties and all), and what she was famous for – winning the decathlon, the supposed pinnacle of male athletic achievement, and being the “world’s greatest athlete.” That’s the main reason for the attention now, not the association with the Kardashians. If Robert Kardashian were still alive and were doing exactly the same thing, or some other male Kardashian, I don’t think there’s any chance at all that the transition would be receiving a fraction of the attention Jenner’s is receiving.
I admit that my first thought was “Caitlyn Jenner? Who’s Caitlyn Jenner” (The name Caitlyn threw me off–seemed like a “too young” name–and also an overused young name that I’m not crazy about.) Then when I realized who was in the photo, I thought the photographer/photo editor/surgeon(?) did a good job. Then I remembered how, back in 1976, I had a crush on Bruce Jenner. . .
I think that’s why people “care” or are somewhat interested in the story–because not only was Bruce Jenner famous before the Kardashian show, he was famous for being, at one time, the world’s greatest MALE athlete. It is just hard to understand, but I wish her well.
I was waiting for this… It isn’t all “judgmental crap”. She is putting it all out there for the public, so it is going to be discussed. I can imagine that it hits close to home for Donna, but get real! This was a famous male athlete who managed to draw repeated attention to himself over many years- and now he’s a female. It’s going to be discussed, and whether you think everything other than a million “attaboys” is “judgmental crap” isn’t going to change that.
If he is so compelled that he is taking this step at 16, then it doesn’t seem to be something you or anyone would be able to talk him out of. He doesn’t just want to be a woman, an I-can-go-either-way choice, his brain has been telling him he is female not male since birth.
I wish we knew more about the neurological development that happens inutero and the science of how the sex of a baby is determined, not just biologically. There are of course physical birth defects that can leave a child’s genitalia ambiguous, and that can be addressed medically, but how to explain a child born with perfect genitalia but who feels profoundly that they are in the wrong body for their gender. Something genetic or neurological that misfires during the development of the brain, and it is simply not fully understood.

Someone…I live under a rock. What is the connection between Jenner and the Kardashians? I’m not a TV watcher.
I happen to think the comments on this thread have been primarily supportive - with some curiosity thrown in. I didn’t start the thread to bash her and I have not seen that happening. (if you want to see haters - go on fb and twitter). I don’t know any transgendered people in my real life - I am finding her journey/story interesting and yes confusing at times. I think educating people is one of her goals and part of the educational process is asking questions and seeking clarification.
@thumper1 Bruce was married to Kris Jenner, the former wife of Robert Kardashian and matriarch of the Kardashian family as known by the show Keeping Up With the Kardashians. At the time, he was regularly featured on the show and was a father figure to the Kardashian girls.
My first thought was at least she didn’t spell Caitlyn with a K.
I know someone who transitioned while in college back in the '80’s. We all stumbled around our pronouns for a while but then it was fine. Total personality change too, as if the real person were finally coming out. She is quite stunningly beautiful, through and through. Going through something like that, it must make you very strong.
Caitlyn/Bruce - I don’t get that feeling from. Not yet anyway. All that Kardashain craziness and all the pin up posing is a bit off putting. I wish her well, and will always remember the amazing Bruce too. I think it makes anyone healthier if they can step out of the limelight. I’m glad the children could see that.
Until now, Chaz Bono was probably the most famous person to transition. This is no easy task, especially in the limelight. If they have the courage to take the opportunity to educate (there should be a better way to word that but am drawing a blank), I give him a lot more credit than the Kardashian clan, who are a bunch of talentless media hogs who have built that, and their physical assets (pun intended) real and enhanced, into an empire.
At least Bruce Jenner 's fame was built on real talent. I think Caitlin looks great and more power to her.
Jessica Lange comments on the resemblance between Caitlyn and herself
DonnaL - Jenner rear ended the woman’s car hard enough to push her into oncoming traffic. If you rear end someone, unless it’s a chain collision, it is your fault.
If I had killed someone due to my own negligence, I don’t think I’d be crowing about my wonderfulness on a TV show or a magazine just a couple of months later. But celebrities are narcissists and think only of themselves.
Notifying people of a major life change = “crowing about your own wonderfulness”? Would you prefer self-flagellation to atone for sins? Walking on hot coals? Selling everything to live as a hermit?
That’s my point, TatinG: this was a chain collision, with Jenner at the end of it. So please wait until there’s an adjudication before assuming that Jenner was negligent.
