bump, anybody care to join?

Me! I think rankings are a way out for people who are too lazy to do their own college research.

I hate people who hate rankings! Leave my rankings alone!!!

AY-MEN to that ^^^

love'm rankings! not a thing wrong with them.

obviously they're not the only or main criteria you should use in making your college decisions (they shouldn't even be a significant factor), but they're just so much fun!!

leave'm alone!

I would like to join. I do look at rankings, but not everything. Though, I do loathe someone's ratings. <stpaulhockey></stpaulhockey>

HS rankings are a complete joke.

College rankings do have some merit, though. Nothing wrong with using them as a guideline.

I like rankings...for college sports teams. I could care less about USNWR's rankings though, although they are a useful resource for many people.

I do like US News ratings too. It gives you an idea of what type of school it is. But ratings aren't everything, they should help guide you and that's it.

Pierre, I didn't know you hate rankings..

Hate is a strong word...

I like LOATHE better, lol.

There you go early_college

The point is that many people use rankings as a "useful" resource. US News & World Report can be helpful in seeing which "group" of schools are in your SAT range or what schools are highly reputable or not but in my opinion college guidebooks such as Fiske Guide To Colleges, Princeton Review, Colleges That Change Lives should by far be the #1 tool for students starting off a college search because they give you an actually feel of the college (if you're worried about a book being biased, just read a few to get different perspectives on how people view the social and academic life at the college).

If you're worried about reputation, there are tons of people here on CC in the "majors" section who can help you out that are actually employment workers who can tell you how the school is viewed in their workplace instead of letting US News tell you what school is better reputation wise and there are people who work in graduate school admissions or have been to graduate school that can tell you first hand what students seem to make it to graduate school and what don't or you can look online at the college's list of where they send students to grad school etc....

I just hate when people rank and fight about ivies. i mean what a waste of time. they all have earned their spot as amazing schools but people on here feel the need to reduce them to a number. until i came to cc i'd never seen anything like it

I agree Banana Sandwich15, there are certain "groups" of schools that have earned themselves a specific position in the United States Higher Education System in terms of reputation and quality. However, it's useless to reduce these groups into numbers or "tiers" and then select one over the other because it has a higher number than the other.

Count me in for the club, pierre!
