yeah…the fact that everybody is so incredible is pretty much why we’re not that confident haha. so anybody wanna chance me? :)

Hey guys, I just wanted to know if there are people that got into Berkeley mostly for their essays? For example, if you have a pretty good application, but its not as good as other people who apply for UCB have. So, basically they concentrated on their essay on the most part. Thank you and sorry for my weird question =[

I think my essays made a big difference. Although my UC GPA was high (4.4), my extracurriculars/community service were virtually non-existent, my SAT scores were pretty average (SAT I: 2080, SAT II: 790, 730), and I only took 3 AP classes. I worked hard on my essays and had my English teacher and college counselor read them.

UCB last year seemed to go more for diversity.
Whatever the reason, I got in with much less impressive resumes than these.
I think my extensive community service (500+ hours) gave me the edge. That’s the only thing that made my application impressive. My essays were good too.
At Cal Day, they mentioned various diverse people, such as a finger skateboard world champion.

I had less than 2000 SAT and 600 range SAT II.
3.9 GPA
3 AP classes, max offered; only 1 in my Junior Year, which I passed.
I did varsity sports and choir.
I took 3 summer courses; one was independent.
Got 4 awards

So, UCB desired diversity this year. I would think Hewittdy has a good chance at getting in. Those 5 honor societies and multiple leadership positions are quite different from anything I’ve seen (not that I’ve seen much…).

Is your GPA UC, weighted or unweighted ? How about your essay? Also 500+ hours and 4 awards aren’t so bad.

UC GPA: 4.12
Unweighted GPA: 3.90
Weighted GPA: 4.12

California Resident

ACT:
36 composite
35 reading
36 math
36 science
36 english
31 combined english/writing (7 essay)

SAT II:
800 Math II
800 Physics
780 Biology
770 US History

College of Engineering

I’ve done a summer swim team every year, and I’ve been in band every school year. I just got back from the YESS program at Caltech (http://yess.caltech.edu); I’m not sure how important that is, but the program had a 4% acceptance rate so I figured it must be worth something. I have taken 4 AP classes so far, and I’m doing 4 more next year, as well as AP computer science independently.

Hopefully someone will reply.

I am just curious to hear some input on my ability to get in based on my information and my out-of-state residency. Thanks!

Amarkov - your GPA is little bit lower than other applicants. Your SAT IIs are great. How about your SATI ? Did you take it yet? ACT is okay i guess. You should do more EC’s maybe service hours or something. You should concentrate on the essay and do good on the SAT if you didn’t take it yet. I guess you have a chance. Good Luck. I hope you get in.

ottermax - Your GPA is good. SATI and SATIIs are okay. Your EC’s are good but try something better, to stand out(Like an award or something). You have a pretty good chance, I hope you get accepted. Good Luck.

Harvard1009 - This is a Berkeley Chance Thread(in case you didn’t notice :S). Your SATI is good, Your SATIIs are little bit low. Your GPA is not so great for those Colleges, but as you said before, you improved it throughout the years. BTW how about your weighted GPA? Coursehold?AP CLASSES-EXAMS? Your EC’s are perfect i guess but your other stats aren’t so great. Like its not bad its just for Harvard, Yale, Princeton, etc… they basicaly want the top kids. You still have a chance i guess. It wont hurt to apply. I wish you the best. I hope you get into your top choice.Good Luck.

I actually got a 2080 on the SAT I (eww), but I was told that if I submitted the ACT instead my score on it wouldn’t be considered. And a perfect score on the ACT seems good enough.

I’m pretty sure a 36 ACT for Berkeley has a little more than a “chance.” Since Berkeley doesn’t use recommendations I’m pretty sure the only factors are GPA, SAT/ACT, and essay. I was told EC’s aren’t a major big deal.

Hopefully someone will reply.

wasparikwasparik: You should get in since all your scores are good and you have a lot of extracirriculars.

hjf: Are you engineering and are you applying as an international?

Okay everyone seems really outstanding, which makes me kind of worried. I’m applying to the College of Letters and Sciences as Undeclared/Pre-Business Admin, and I’m an international student (Asian) under the British A-Level system so I have no GPA to speak of.

Obviously applying as International, w/o financial aid.

SAT I: 2240, 730CR 740Writing 800Math
SAT II: 740 Math II 730 Literature
Scholarship: I’m on a government Humanities Scholarship at one of the top Junior Colleges in my country (which isn’t saying a lot since my country only has around 20 Junior Colleges… I come from Singapore.) I also have this other scholarship (I forgot what it’s called, it’s a really long name.) but basically it waives all my school fees due to my grades.
O-Levels Results: I got 8 distinctions (English, Higher Chinese, Chinese, English Literature, Physics, Social Studies+Geography (it’s counted as one subject), Additional Math and Elementary Math) and a B for chemistry.

Anyway, some of my co-curriculars/awards etc. are:

Member of Chinese Orchestra, Harmonica Band, Chinese Society
I’m a section leader in Harmonica band, and I’ve performed in a lot of school performances as well as 3 judging competitions (2x Gold With Honours for Chinese Orchestra and Silver for Harmonica Band)
Participated in annual school play for Chinese Society
Distinctions for International Competition for Schools - English and Australian Mathematics Competition for the Westpac Awards
Participation in my school’s annual cross country championships
Around 200+ hours of community service, I dedicated around 100 hours to leading a community service project involving teaching beneficial skills to children of low-income families

Also, I’ve done part-time jobs before during my holidays last year and last last year, if that helps.

I’m worried about my SAT I and II scores not being good enough, especially my SAT II scores. And, as you can see, there is no “hook”, nothing super spectacular about my co-curriculars etc. So…yeah.

thanks dill_scout

Deng: SAT may not be high enough for EECS (It’s pretty good otherwise but with EECS its really hard to say what is good enough. 2040 is good but honestly depends on the other people applying at times.)

Valkarie: What’s your major? And are you out of state?

being white helps you now at Cal. There’s so many Asians here that Cal decided to simmer down. lol. So Valk, work on the GPA. Wisco as in Wisconsin right? haha do you hate idaho?
