Essay: no hook

What are my chances of getting into Berkeley EECS

I’m kind of curious about applying to Cal as well but since I’m somewhat unique, I don’t know how Cal would view me.

I’m 35 white male, living in MA, who returned to community college after dropping out of two schools when I went when I was 18.

I’m in computer science at my community college and after 58 credits I have a 4.0. Currently this semester, my last semester at community college looks to add an additional 15 credits with 4.0 for a total of 73 @ 4.0.

I’ve received 3 scholarships this past year and am in the top 5% of my class. Also I’m in the National Honor Society for Community Colleges.

The two prior colleges from 1992-1994 have only a few transferable credits, otherwise they are really embarrassing scores.

I couldn’t tell you my SAT because I took them oh 18 years ago.

And I have no extra curricular activity because I work remotely and nearly full time for a software company in CA.

I’ve done long term volunteer abroad in the past.

My major would be computer science.

For my essay I would write about my life as a homeless junkie and the perspective it gave me about life as well as the second chance at life I was given. (this is no joke, this is how I lived for too many years of my life)

Is there any chance? Or would I be flushing the app fee down the toilet?

Thanks,

Kevin

your SAT 1s could be higher. Rank looks good though

Kevin probably has an interesting story in his personal statement. I really do think you are Berkeley material. Nice comeback and good luck.

Thanks, I don’t know if I’ll apply since I’m not exactly flush with cash.

Kevin… I am pretty sure there is a fee waiver for those with financial need :-/ . You do have an interesting background - I know someone just like you who is 38 and doing comp. programming (at a top Canadian college…). You seem fit for Berkeley. Good Luck.

thanks. maybe i will give it a shot.

I applied to the UCs and got into all the ones I applied to (LA, Berkeley, SD, SB) except Davis, for some reason. I think that UCs value test scores and GPAs the most over anything else. Those were my strongest suits. I have friends that got into very respectable colleges but not all of the UCs because their SAT subject test scores were around 700 and ACTs in the lower 30s even though they were skillful writers and top 2% ranked students.

curious about this thread as well, so bump

I don’t understand how people get their UC Gpa’s so high. Am I doing something wrong? Even if I put in just A’s and the 8 honor classes I can’t break 4.2?

Hi guys. Id appreciate it if you chance me too.

Major: Civil Engineering or Electical Engineering ( which one is easier to get into. In your opinion)

UC gpa : 4.21 W 3.87 UW
SAT1: 2090 CR:650 Math: 730 Writing:710
SAT2: taking in Nov. and Dec.
Class Rigor: 7 APs and numerous honors ( about 17 semesters of honors total)
-Calc, Chem, US History, Econmics (micro), Psychology, CalcBc, and Language and Composition
Volunteer Activites: about 350 hours of volunteer and 200 hours of internship
Personal Statements are good
First generation to attend college, low income, and twin (if that matter)
CA resident
drastic improvement between 9th and 10th grade

Thank you

UC Gpa : 3.875 D:

I also took a 5 unit Business course at a local community college and received an A in that, I’m not sure how to calculate that in.

California Resident

SAT Reasoning Scores

Johns Hopkins CTY Scholars - funded by the Goldman Sachs Foundation
Honor Roll / Principal’s list
Regional winner for the NFTE entrepreneurship business competition

Any thoughts would be much appreciated!

I am looking at applying to the school of engineering and would really like to apply as undeclared engineering, but my acceptance chances with that really scare me.

Out of State - Colorado
White upper-middle class male

W GPA: 4.167 (I took the most rigorous course load available to me at my school)
UW GPA: 4.0
I don’t know my UC GPA
Rank: 5/405 (should be 1 or very close to 1 after this semester)

State Mandated (no Optional Writing) ACT:
-34 Composite
-36 Math
-36 English
-34 Reading
-31 Science

Second ACT +Optional Writing:
-34 Composite
-35 Math
-34 English
*8 Writing (5 on AP English test kind of contradicts this…)
-34 Reading
-33 Science

SAT:
-700 M
-650 CR
-720 CW

I am most likely going to omit this from my application because it is embarrassing to me.

SAT II:
-770 Math II :frowning:
-740 Chemistry :frowning: (after a year of chemistry which was a prereq. to AP Chem :()
-710 Physics (no prep after a year of doing no physics at all)

I could retake these and probably get an 800 on Chemistry because I have been in AP Chem. for a few months, but it’s pretty much too late.

Courses:
-All honors with 3 AP’s so far. I am currently taking 4 AP’s (BC Calc, Chemistry, Microecon./Comp. Politics, English Lit/comp.)
-AP tests scores are probably irrelevant, but they were two 5’s and a 4.

EC’s:
-3 years of tennis, 2 years varsity
-NHS Vice-president
-Mustang Mentor Program (freshman mentor program at my school)
-I love art and am very good at it.
-There’s probably something minor that I forgot.
-Very minor amount of community service.
-Semester of band, but it didn’t really interest me.

I see myself as a pretty excellent writer, and my essays are very good. I am hoping to use them to help make me stand out in some way, considering that my EC’s are pretty much terrible. My ACT’s I think are pretty stellar, but I know my SAT’s are very lacking.

One thing that really disappoints me about the application is that there is no way to send in artwork. I really am a very good artist, and I know it is something that would really set me apart.

Also, seeing other people’s extracurriculars really disheartens me because they are so much better than mine. I have not been able to find any such opportunities in my area. I don’t know if it is because I haven’t taken the initiative to really search for them, just that they don’t exist, or simply that there is no one to point me in the right direction. I feel like the education system in Colorado is generally lacking.

I know that I am not an amazing candidate for the ultra-competitive engineering majors, but I really would not be interested in anything else. I am probably the best person in my class at science and social studies and one of the best at math and English, so I think I would fit very well with the engineering program. I would like to apply to engineering, but I really doubt my chances with such a decision.

Any advice on my application or confirmation or easement of my fears would be greatly appreciated!

Also I don’t know if it would help or not to put in there that I am gay… What do you think?

^ I wish I could be as smart as you.

Okay let’s try this again.

Asian male California resident

Applying to Environmental Science in either L&S or NR. Maybe in Engineering for Environmental Engineering, but my chances are lower.
uc gpa: 4.10
uw: 3.70
I don’t get it, the more a’s I get, the more my gpa drops.

ELC Student (guaranteed to davis already)

ACT (retook on October, awaiting score)
Composite 28
-English 25 (+2 from June, still atrocious)
-Reading 32 (+2 from June)
-Math 28 (-1 from June)
-Science 26 (-2 from June)
Essay 8 (-2 from June)

SAT I
-CR 630
-Math 590
-Writing 590
-Essay 9

SATII
-Chemistry 630 (pathetic, since I took Chem AP)
-US Hist. 730
-English Lit (planned)
I don’t know if I should take math level 2, I’m not too good at trig, and I don’t think I’m going to even apply to the college of engineering.

AP
-Chem 4
-US Hist. 4

Courses
-Completed 18 honors and AP semesters
Currently enrolled in
-Calculus AB
-Physics C: Mechanics
-Ceramics A/B
-Macroecon AP
-US Govt/Politics AP
-English Lit AP
-Environmental Sci AP

EC/Enrichment
-Asb commissioner
-Board for various special interest clubs
-Csf, key club, interact, and 6 other clubs
-Volleyball for 3 years, planning on returning for fourth year
-internship with exxonmobil
-summer camp at USC dealing with the environment and potential energy resources
-most of my community service comes from clubs which total around 100 hours.

Yeah, I guess I’m not the most outstanding student, I think I’m slightly above average. And since senior year started my grades have gone to hell. I’ve given up on physics because I’m not taking the test, and I’ve been focusing on last minute ACT/SATII. I’m honestly scared, I really want to go to Berkeley. If I don’t get in, I’m probably going to Davis and transferring to Berkeley or from a dreaded community college (El Camino Community College). I guess you could also call me a LGBT student.

GPA: (3.89 UW/ 4.35 W)
SAT: 800 M 750 R 730 W
SAT II: 760 Math 2, 660 US History (I’m taking Math 2 and Biology E in December again)
EC’s:
VP of Young Democrat’s Club
4 years of volunteer tutoring with 210+ hours
4 years of volunteering at community center over the summer for 100+ hours
4 years on academic decathlon
I’m In State
Also, I’m majoring in Bioengineering and I know that makes a big difference. Thanks for any input!

Hi i just got my new SAT scores and i was hoping you can chance me again! :]

here was my old post
IN STATE (Berkeley is my “reach” school, but please tell me chances anyways :] )
MAJOR: CIVIL ENGINEERING or ELECTRICAL ENGINEERING
GPA: 3.88 UW
4.21 W (both UC)
upward trend from freshman year ( even though they dont calc. in gpa) i went from a 2.9 freshman year to a 3.8 sophmore and then to a 4.0 first sem of junior year and 3.8 second semester ( all unweighted tho)
CLASS RANK : 29% (the ranking system at my school is kind of weird, its completely unweighted so people who are taking reg classes and like getting 4.0 can be taking up top spots) (does this reallly matter at Berkeley)
SAT1 : 1830 but i plan on retaking and getting a 1900+ (how important is SAT b/c i think im one of the people who are really bad at it :/)
ACT: (practice tests so far : 30, 33, 31, 32 (some of them w/ essay) ) (i usually score 36s in math section)
SAT2 : taking in Nov or Dec ( 740+ in math and 700+ in chemistry hopefully)
IMPORTANT EC’S: 200 hour internship with networking company
A-train peer tutoring
library volunteer work
senior homes volunteer work
designed and built a model of a house and a truss bridge

7 APs
PERSONAL STATEMENTS : GREAT

p.s does first generation to attend college or low family income matter in application process ?

Thanks everyone

my new scores are SAT- 2090 CR 650 Math 730 Writing 710
ACT 31 Eng. 32 Math 33 Reading 31 and Science 26 (plan on boosting science so maybe 32+)
SAT2: just took . im guessing a high 700 or 800 in math and maybe low 700s for chem.
After calculating EC i have about 500+ hours of Service

ALso would you say CE or EE is harder to get in ?

oh sorry 34 for math not 33 ^^
