How would this be different from a Graduate Student standpoint?
Unweighted GPA = 3.987
Weighted GPA = 4.5ish i would guess, 10 AP’s with all A’s
OOS
800/760 math/reading, 35 ACT (32/35/36/36 fked up math cuz i wasn’t taking it srsly tbh)
780 math, 750 us history, 780 bio, 740 chem (prb should’ve studied)
planning to apply to EECS
4th place in hydrogeology at science olympiad national tournament (25/32 in two other events, team placed 25th)
national merit semi
3nd in regional knowledge bowl and 2nd previous year
placed at state multiple times for scioly
won 1st in category 9th and 10th grade for state science fair, didn’t make it to ISEF
internship at UMBC ai lab junior year but it wasn’t competetive and no sig findings
accepted at competetive MIT summer program this summer albeit recently started (BWSI), 30 days of fully funded machine learning
historian for key club
that’s more or less the biggest parts
mainly curious whether i should apply for EECS or apply for something easier. I have a good safety state school (UW) with a DA as well, so I figured i might as well go for it all, also applying to UCLA and UCSD for their decent CS programs, any advice regarding those?
oh and my essays are probably gonna be mediocre garbage but that’s what i get for starting them 3 hours ago.

Why Berkeley?
- I am planning to write about how Berkeley sociology was first introduced to me by a friend at Yale, which made me change my perspective on it from a series of numbers and arbitrary data to something impactful and critical for change. I am going to compare Berkeley itself to this realization - a school that once was just numbers and high-ranking statistics that I thought I could never achieve that I realized was at the center of what I loved in life and could be critical for contributing to society and creating the commentary the world needs today.
Personal Essay -
This essay is going to be a story about how I grew up, I don’t want to spoil a lot of it, but the premise follows as such: when I was young, I used to make my own faux nation-states, with drafted constitutions and regimes and militaries and languages, and creating societies and organizing them was ironically my escape from my own social status - I grew up harsh, with little money, moving house to house, always insecure. I will discuss how creating societies in my mind, organizing them, and making myself “king” helped me to realize that I was not the product of what I was born into, but was rather capable of moving my dreams of constitutions, parliamentary sessions, and sovereign status to actual goals for a future that didn’t have to be limited.
@jordanheston Woah, you have great stats (get that 34) and you have strong EC’s that work pretty well together, what are you interested in majoring in?
Hey! Sociology or Political Science is the goal.
hello, i’m interested in applying to either berk’s microbio program or anthropology. here’s info ab me –
stats –
- gpa: 3.83 uw | 4.19 w | uc gpa: 4.36 | (not sure what my class rank is)
- act: 32 (retaking, likely to get a 34+)
- i plan on taking sat bio, math 2, and lit this summer.
extras/awards –
- debate: policy debater for 3 years and counting & team leader/captain for my team. i've gotten octofinalist and semifinalist at state along with winning other smaller tournaments. i'm also a volunteer debate coach at a local middle school with 40+ members in the club.
- science olympiad: 6 years in scioly and i was build team captain for our school's A team this year (it's a competitive tryouts process) and our team has won first at state and second x2. i've gotten several awards at HS state, all ranging from first to third.
- model un: club officer on our school's board senior year and like scioly, 6 years of participation.
- volunteer research assistant: i'm working on three internships/projects this summer. one is in a virology lab. the second is helping a local professor w/ her summer research on justice-impacted youth w/ an emphasis on parental incarceration. the third is with another local professor studying chinese foreign policy with the US.
- non-profit board member: i'm on the board for a medical nonprofit and i manage media presence (website, social media, etc) and help organize our events, like hosting workshops to raise funds.
- national history day: i'm the president our of school's nhd club and have qualified to nationals a total of 3 times, winning several state awards and one at nationals.
thanks!
Woah you have amazing activities and pretty good stats! I think you’ll have a solid shot at getting in!
hello friends! I’m planning to apply for neurobiology in the fall and would really appreciate any advice I could get!
Stats:
GPA: 3.98 uw, 4.88 w (my school does gpa calculations a lil weirdly), my uc gpa is around a 4.5
Rank: 1/760
SAT: 1580 (800 math, 780 reading)
SAT Subject Tests: 800 bio, 800 chem, 780 math II
ACT: 35
Colleges don’t rlly look at AP scores so I won’t list them but I got mostly 4s and 5s with one 3.
Activities:
Colorguard and winterguard (3 yrs, varsity), we’ve placed at some local and regional competitions but we’re extremely underfunded so we’re not that great ahaha. I still love the activity and the team though!
Science Bowl (2 years, captain, founder), my friends and I cofounded our school’s first ever science bowl! During our first year, we managed to place first at regionals! (we got destroyed at nationals though ahahaha)
Interact Club (4 years, vp), we organized big fundraisers throughout the year to raise thousands of dollars for south sudan! I also organize the events and bondings
CSF (4 years, secretary), the club was very small and inactive during my freshman year but we’ve grown over the past 4 years and have given 37 low income students $500 in scholarships! I’m in charge of tracking members’ participation and organizing fundraisers to raise funds for our scholarships!
Leadership program (3 years, mentor), I can’t disclose the name of this leadership program because it would give away my identity. In this program, we do many drives and fundraisers to help the less fortunate in our community! We’ve done homeless kits, mommy and me drives, and toy drives for a local orphanage! We raised 30,000 pounds of clothes and receive almost $3K and we used it to restore a garden and hallways at a local elementary school. As a mentor, my job is to guide subsequent new leaders through the program and encourage them to reach their goals! We have weekly calls with each of our assigned leaders and we allow them to open up and have someone to listen to their goals, fears, and ambitions. I’ve grown and learned a lot through this program and I’m really grateful for it :DD
Senior Citizens Club (2 years, founder, president), I started this club my junior year! We volunteer at local senior centers and nursing homes and also host events and fundraisers directed towards senior citizens. At senior centers, we usually prepare and serve food, call bingo, bond with the senior citizens, and I sometimes play piano on their karaoke nights! During our first year, we raised $3K for the Alzheimer’s Association.
Peer Tutor (2 years) I tutor underclassmen and some upperclassmen twice a week usually on math, biology, or chemistry! I’m in charge of tracking the tutors’ attendance so I’m sort of like a secretary ahahaha
NHS (3 years) I’ve been participating in nhs since sophomore year! I’m just a member though.
Medical Internship: I intern at a local hospital and I usually take the patients’ vitals, help admit and discharge patients, and I sometimes get to talk to certain patients. I’m also under the direction of an assigned nurse and I aid her with whatever I can (ex: finding paperwork, weighing patients, etc). I was chosen for their leadership team and I’ll be coming back as a coordinator to recruit and work alongside new interns.
Volunteer: I volunteer at different places for my clubs. However, I’ve been volunteering at Project Access since the end of freshman year and I get to tutor low income children and organize fun crafts + events for them to participate in! I got the PVSA gold award from this organization so I have a very substantial amount of hours logged. I also play piano every month at a temple my mom goes to!
Summer:
I worked part time as a private tutor and taught piano, math, and biology. I also attended a neurology camp at UCI and I’m currently doing a lab research on brain tumors which is very eye-opening!
Awards: National AP Scholar, AP Capstone Diploma wooo, I won a nanotech comp at UCLA for my pitch, UNSCO high honors yay, that one 1st place science bowl regional comp, PVSA gold
And I think that’s it! My school is in a relatively low income area (70% of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch) so we don’t have many opportunities available to us and the activites that we do have are extremely underfunded. Despite that, I tried to make the best of my situtation and I’m really hoping I’ll be the first person in 5 years to get accepted into Berkeley but no matter the decision, life goes on and I’m just glad I had the opportunities to do what I love!
Hi! I’m applying for Biology at UC Berkeley out of state for fall of 2019 and it’ll be great if I could know my chances.

I’m regretting how I did not elaborate on why I really want to study Genetics in particular. And I’ve also said a bunch of silly things in haste (I shan’t divulge, because confidentiality). Still, my immediate feeling about the interview was good, I liked how casual and relaxed it was.
Max uc gpa, 4.0 uw, 35 ACT, both parents went to Cal, Regents Scholarship at UCSB (mechanical engineering) & UCSD (mechanical engineering), applied undeclared to Cal Letters and Science.
He is worried about being socially conservative. He toured UCSB and was totally welcomed-he toured Cal and didn’t feel the same.
If S got into UCSD and UCSB but not UCLA, is there still a chance for UCB?
