The Official Fall 2014 UCLA Transfer Decisions Thread

@CollegeDropout1‌

Yeah well it’s just as complicated as a plan to get in the White House. ;:wink:

@CollegeDropout1‌
I’m kicking myself even as I type this, but what is it that you actually want? You got into both UCSD and UCLA. What do you hope to accomplish with another year at CC?

It seems like you’re almost afraid forward, regardless of where you’re going.

@2016Candles

Actually, I am looking forward to going to UCSD. The only think that is unsettling is its dull social atmosphere. College is the place where you get to meet new people, but I think going to SD is going to make that really hard. I am thinking of waiting another year to apply to Cal, but that is just a thought right now. I just think Cal is a better fit for me than SD because of personal reasons.

However, there isn’t a perfect university, so as of this moment, I am planning for UCSD! By staying another year at CC, I was hoping to finish the pre reqs for Cal’s computer science degree. It was also going to buy me more time to decide what non career and non academic goals I want to pursue.

@Cayton I was going to offer you the Campaign manager position, but not now!

I don’t think anyone thinks you’re laying out plans for the White House @collegedropout1. :smiley:

@Lindyk8 That was a joke! Cayton said that my plans were just as complicated as plans to get in the white house!

I knew that college dropout… :))

@CollegeDropout1.

If Cal is a better fit for you, then why didn’t you apply this year?

Also, have you visited UCSD? The school is not going to make it hard to meet people, that’s up to you.

@ocnative I didn’t apply because I thought my GPA was too low. By the end of the fall semester, I had a 3.45 GPA. It was all because I did rather poorly my second semester of college. I guess you could say that it was the “Stalingrad” of my academic career. It was a complete disaster! I have never actually visited UCSD. I heard that it is really big, but that is not what makes it hard to find friends, the social atmosphere is the really barrier. If I decide to go, I will try to make it work.

@collegedropout1, your life is not going to be magically better because you chose one campus over another. I kind of think at this point you are not going to be happy wherever you are because you constantly and obsessively go through an unending list of “what ifs”. You will continue this wherever you land.

You wanted UCLA, your parents wanted UCLA, but for some reason you chose UCSD even though you think you will be miserable because of the lack of social scene. This confuses me. You say you chose it because you liked the major better - a major, as far as I can tell, you aren’t really even happy with. I can guarantee you probably will not be happy, but going to a CC for another year will make you less happy. If by some chance you made it to UCB (although from what you’ve said it doesn’t seem like you’d get into UCB there, as you seem ambivalent about the courses). But let’s say you got in, then you’re going to second guess whether you can compete with the over-the-top UCB brainiacs (anyone would), and they’ll be carting you away in a straitjacket.

Based on your comments, hesitations, insecurities and second-guessing, I simply do not see the high-pressure environment of UCB as a fit for you.

No major is perfect. My daughter loves Communications but every girl in the world majors in it and she’s unsure if job potential. She added a minor. Whatever. She’s very happy. She will have graduated from UCLA! And she will get a job. You can’t nitpick everything.

You chose UCSD. You need to accept your decision, embrace it, get excited, and make it work. As I think @calbro said, you might have an anxiety disorder or OCD, or something. It might help to get a diagnosis and some meds. You are not helping yourself this way. I want you to succeed. This is not the way. :-*

@collegedropout, you need to finally make a commitment and go to UCSD. I wouldn’t suggest staying another year at JC just to see if you’d get into UCB CS with a 3.4X. You more than likely wouldn’t get in and you’d be in the same exact situation a year from now (assuming you’d get into UCLA and UCSD again). You’re going away for two years. I wouldn’t worry too much about the social setting. Don’t quit on yourself again.

I wouldn’t bother spending time giving more advice. Based on their posts I think they just want to be the center of attention, something not appropriate for this forum. This forum should be about helping prospective or current UC students. Not spamming with posts like “can a 77 year old have the college experience.” And a lot of great advice has been given. I know everyone wants to help, but I think they’re being disingenuous.

Anyway, good luck at SD. They have a great CS program and some cool classes in areas like HCI. Also a beautiful place in a lively beach city.

@lindyk8 @Zalrons‌ I have embraced UCSD! I LOVE UCSD! I just need to clarify something, staying another year at my CC to apply to Cal was never a serious idea. I only thought of waiting another year to transfer because something in my life popped up, but that issue has been solved. It really a half baked idea that I never took too seriously. I never thought that I would get backlash from some people on here.

I didn’t think that I would be miserable at UCSD. I just thought that it would be hard to make friends, especially because of its social atmosphere. I was a little concerned, but that was it. It might have seemed like I was screaming and pulling my hairout on CC, but I guess that was because you can’t hear the tone of my voice. Somethings do get lost when people start communicating through writing. I was calm all throughout this process.

Just to defend my pride, I think I could get into UCB next year. My GPA is much higher now, and it is going to be even higher by the time I finish my summer classes. By the start of Fall, if I was going to stay, but I am NOT, my GPA is going to be over 3.7. Plus, I was also a member of the UCB TAP program, but none of this matters now.

@credulitykills I don’t know why you are using plural pronouns when you are referring to one person one here, me. If you are going to call me out, then at least be direct. Don’t worry, I can take criticism :D. By using plural pronouns, it just seems like your making an escape hatch if I decide to challenge you on your criticism. Anyway, I am not being disingenuous and I do use this forum to help other UC and community college students. All but two of my posts where like that, and the ones that weren’t, I regret posting. You’re making it sound like all I do is spam this forum, but I don’t. I don’t see why you think I come here looking for attention, I don’t! I come here to give and ask for advice.

Anyway, congrats on getting accepted to UCB! Yeah, I am actually really looking forward to taking some HCI classes. It is a really interesting field. I don’t go to the beach a whole often, i get sun burnt really easily, so I am indifferent about UCSD’s location!

@CollegeDropout1‌ >:D<

I hate it when I make grammatical errors, and then I can’t fix them. I look like an idiot.

@CollegeDropout1‌

You don’t need grammatical errors to look like an idiot. JK :slight_smile: Good luck at UCSD.

Too funny @music1990‌ …

On another note, does anyone know why they moved the start of school to Oct 2nd, when it used to be about a week earlier? You now only have about a two week winter break, whereas before it was three weeks. Your current winter break is one of the shortest I’ve seen. I hope they revert back next year.

The first day or 2 of classes was going to fall on a Jewish holiday. Rather than have large numbers of students miss the first classes, they pushed it back 1 week. That’s what I was told.

Here’s why school starts late, and winter break is short.

<a href=“Late Rosh Hashanah delays fall 2014 start, shorter winter break - Daily Bruin”>http://dailybruin.com/2014/01/06/late-rosh-hashanah-delays-fall-2014-start-shorter-winter-break/

Good to know. So I guess next year it will be back to regularly scheduled programming.

@lindyk8‌

If Jewish holidays don’t fall on or near the same days as the beginning of class next year, then yes. :P
