Semester or quarter?

@luckie1367

Quarter units.

216 quarter units = 144 semester units.

@ocnative I looked up the info and the minor seems pretty amazing, it looks like it focuses on child developmental psychology which is what interests me the most. I hope its not too hard to get into that minor I will ask about it during orientation

Have you heard back yet about family housing?

@2016candles no! its killing me, I keep calling they say they will notify me 30 days before my move in date. However they do not inform me if I have gotten a place or not. They said its guaranteed but the date isn’t so it may take forever. I hope to hear by next month though. Ive decided the longest I want to wait is december. I am willing to wait and commute till than but after that I will rather just find a place on my own near ucla

That’s crazy. I know that feeling when you just want to be settled already. Hopefully it will come thru before school starts so you don’t have to commute and you can put your focus in school.

I’ll keeps fingers crossed :!! [-O<

@2016candles thanks! I call every once and a while and see if someone will be willing to give me a hint… no luck so far lol

Does anyone know by when we have to accept our decline our financial aid package?
I already know how much I need to take out….yet I haven’t accepted it only because loans freak me out in general
I got a new car a month ago and nearly passed out at the dealership. I got over it the day after but just the thought of debt freaks me out. I guess its because everyone in my family has bad credit(not by choice things happen).

so I’m wondering if there is a deadline so I can hurry up and stop overreacting and accept the loans.

btw I’m really excited to start already!!! I need some walking shoes though I hear its a lot of walking around campus to get to classes(for my major at least).

Also how are you guys planning on taking notes? I really haven’t decided if I can stick to old fashion pen and notebook or if I am going to buy an iPad or take my macbook. I am a slow typer though…back in my day we only had to type 30 words per minute in high school slow. @burntcorpse how have you been taking notes? has it gotten any easier?

I was told you could wait up until the last week in September, but it isn’t recommended. So I’d probably say the beginning of September is the latest you want to accept them.

I’ve always take notes by hand, I’m already on the computer enough and I hate working on a laptop.

@sonic23

Just remember that your debt situation will be a lot more manageable since you’ll only be at UCLA for two years, or 3 years at most. Personally, if you don’t do anything foolish, I think you’ll be fine, financially speaking.

And be sure to prepare for walking! There’ll be lots of it. I doubt you’ll need walking shoes, unless you have foot problems or something.

With regards to note-taking, I haven’t decided. I’ll probably use my laptop, but I’m not too good at note-taking. Then again, I’m not good at note-taking in general.

@Cayton

My community college is on the quarter system, and I actually wish Berkeley was as well, because I love it. I know everyone complains about quarters because they say it’s hard to keep up, but I find them the perfect length. You don’t get bored of them, and you get to try more classes.

@music1990

Well, you better prepare for your classes to drag at certain points when you get to Berkeley…

@Cayton

Lol yeah I’m preparing man…you take every chance to rag on Berkeley huh?

Btw, does it get annoying getting notified every time someone posts on this thread?

@music1990

Well, to be fair, I have to do some preparing of my own with UCLA’s quarter system.

And I do highly respect UC Berkeley as an institution. I just joke about the school to screw with you guys who got in to the school and plan to go. :)

I’ve changed the settings on my account so that I’m not notified every time someone posts in this thread. It’s rather convenient, really. :)

I prefer faster paced classes. I’ve taken quite a few fast track classes during the semester, and they’re usually my favorites. Classes were 8 weeks instead of 16, and I was as to squeeze in more classes per semester.

I’m looking forward to quarters. I can’t stay focused on a single subject more than 2 months or so, this is good for me… I hope ;-)

Hmmm, I know they always say they’re harder but I’m not sure that’s true. I can’t speak for STEM but if they were cramming a semester into a quarter you’d have three semesters a year. I think the most you might get is a bit more reading in certain areas (say English or philosophy), but they’re actually more likely to divide it up (Plato: The Early Years). I don’t recall the English classes being that intense on the quarter system at UCB when I was there.

Here’s a (supposed) list of the easiest classes at UCLA.

Hey @cayton, @2016candles et al, maybe you will run into my daughter if this is still being taught and you’re lucky enough to get in. I read about it last year. Peter Sellars, if you don’t know, is a world renowned, punk-style theatre director. I want!

Thankfully, my current class (I switched courses) doesn’t require note taking that often.

UCLA has some pretty interesting faculty, @lindyk8. James Franco has taught classes there before. I’m not sure if he still does, though.
