Congrats!! @2016Candles

Re online course statement:

'At one point it says “you probably won’t be able to go out and buy your own alcohol when you first arrive at college.”

… Maybe they think you all have DUIs, or are on probation…

Jk… :)

how many online courses are there?
Other than AlcoholEdu and Haven Online Courses and Think About It?
Or are those the only ones?

I just found out there’s a Bruin Party Network bus that takes students 21 and over to the Hollywood clubs. Cost is $20, you can drink on the bus and get wristbands that take you to the top of the line.

UCLA’s hospital ranked #5 nationwide out of 5,000 hospitals.Located in Westwood and Santa Monica.

@2016Candles Whaaat! How’d you get this before orientation?!?!

@2016Candles

Congrats!

Not sure if it’s official or not, but everyone can get an audit right now. I actually have a bit of a problem with mine but I’ll just wait to resolve it until orientation. On My UCLA, you can go to academics tab and go to degree audit and get it from there. May not be fully official now, but that’s what you’ll use in the future.

@sonic23 yeah, those are the ones I am aware of and am dreading completing. Especially the “Haven” one which is probably just like “don’t rape anyone”. Thanks for the valuable information UCLA, I’ll keep that in mind.

Mine is official because it had a little green check on it. Before it had a different icon. I don’t know if mine got finished because I kept bugging them about it, or if they would have done it anyway.

Anyone know the best place to get deals on textbooks?

I’m a huge fan of amazon for books. The prime membership is well worth it for free 2 day shipping, among other things. If you sign up for it with a .edu email address, you get the membership for 1/2 off. I just bought a used, new edition of a book for a summer class for $8.50. I ordered it on a Friday night, and it was delivered Sunday afternoon.

I also use them for text book rentals.

We use amazon as well and there are great savings for used books. But I have read about some sort of renting, sharing programs. Not sure if they’re cheaper or not. Someone mentioned one a while ago. I know bruinwalk has some too.

Oh, wow @2016Candles, I didn’t read all the way to the end if your post. Thx for info. But does that mean half off membership, because my kids already have access to mine. Either way, amazon might be the best bet. I’ll check it out.

OT: they used to have great student discounts for photoshop and illustrator, etc, but now Adobe’s moved into some sort of cloud-sharing monthly membership deal that is lousy.

@lindyk8

I strongly recommend campusbooks.com. It compares prices from various online stores that sell the books you wish to purchase or rent.

thx @cayton. I think that’s the one I heard about.

Clearing out my inbox, I found the one I had been told about: postyourbook.com. Someone recommended it but I know nothing about it.

I’ve been thinking about changing my major all of the sudden. I’m not sure if I want to do Biz Econ anymore

@CSB111 What do you want to do now?

@collegedropout1

Well, I was thinking about careers and what I want to do for the rest of my life, and I can’t see myself just doing some crappy accounting job or working at an investment bank. I really want to get unique knowledge and either try and work on something myself, or work at somewhere more cutting edge, whether it be tech, alternative energy etc. I still love learning about the economy/stock market but I think I can do that myself.

So right now, I’m thinking of going completely into some sort of math, or maybe mix math/physics and some CS. Luckily I have all my math requirements done, but I didn’t take any physics at CC. But I may just stick with Biz Econ, and tack something else on. I just feel like I have a chance to learn things I normally couldn’t, and straight up Econ stuff isn’t even usual and it is mostly outdated.

@Cayton @Lindyk8 @2016Candles I often find that it is actually cheaper to buy the book. I lot of people don’t take into consideration the amount of money you can recover when you sell back the book. Renting may allow someone to get the book cheaper, but you actually end up paying more in the end since you have to give up the book at the end.

@CSB111 You reminded me of a younger me! HAHA, I wanted to become an economist for the longest time ever. I loved and still do learning about the economy, but I soon realized that it would take too much time and be too expensive. I had the same thoughts when I was deciding between SD and LA. I thought if I went LA, I could learn CS by myself, major in geology and then get a job in the oil and gas business if CS didn’t work out.

When I do rent, the rental is about 1/3 of the cost of a used book. So if the used version is $100 to buy, the rental may be $35. If I buy it, I have to find someone willing to pay over $65, in order to make buying it a better deal than renting it. This is assuming that the same book is needed in the subsequent semester/ quarter. If a different professor is teaching, or if the publisher comes out with a new edition, or if the class isn’t offered the next semester, my book becomes obsolete.

For me personally, I only worry about getting the best price today, because resale value is never guaranteed. As I take more courses in my major, I will likely buy more books, simply because I actually want to own them, not because it’s a better value.
