The Official M10 2024 Freakout Thread

I don’t think you should really look deeply into it, but who knows.

The email from Choate informing you of the completed application was very thoughtful. It’s nice to see that are putting in effort like you have during the application process.

if you guys felt busy and stressed during the application process just know that its 10x worse in every way once you get here (exeter)… so yeah look forward to that!

Its definitely stressful but if you have a good time management skill you’ll be fine, or thats what my friends at Andover and Exeter say :skull: but they always have bags under their eyes and always tired so who knows.

Can you elaborate on what your experience as a freshman is and what you could have done to be better prepared? TIA. How was the orientation? Did it help you be better prepared.

I’m a new lower. Orientation was fine but it can’t really ‘prepare’ you, and it’s on you to make friends esp if you’re a non-prep new student. In terms of preparing, I’d suggest doing the math problems (on exeter’s website) over the summer after you learn your placement.

People like to preach time management, but no amount of time management gets around school and sports 8-6, 4+ hours of homework, club meetings, and if you have high ambitions, the constant (and I mean constant, even for some preps) stress about college and getting better grades than people, as well as making time for extracurriculars and finding research opportunities and internships.

Obviously the way I’m describing it doesn’t sound fun, but it really depends on who you are as a person. I’m not complaining - in fact I love it - but kids should know about it when applying. Everyone hates the guy that came to Exeter and now constantly complains about it being stressful and hard - why’d you apply then?

BTW:
Prep = Freshman
Lower = Sophomore.
Either way, the rigor is real, but it’s probably a little bit of shock starting as a lower - you will really need to hit the ground running.
The first term for preps is pass/fail giving them a chance to get used to the pace.
I don’t know if it’s preaching, but IMO time management is essential for success.

Last year my daughter didn’t have any school send a holiday card or anything like that (we do live overseas, so that could be a reason). She also didn’t have a “your application is complete” email from all the schools so she actually sent emails to the AOs to confirm. They all replied that everything was good. She did receive a very nice note from her AO at one school telling her that the AO had just reviewed her application, was super excited about her and mentioned a few personal details from her essays, and said she “couldn’t wait” to advocate for her in the admissions process because she was exactly what that school is looking for. That was nice to hear. And she was accepted in the end.

I’ve gotten actually two emails from Middlesex saying that my application is complete.

Me too!

I’m not really preaching time management, but IMO time management is necessary for success. The academic rigor at Exeter is really hard but its definitely manageable, for example my friend who currently attends Exeter has 30 min - 1 hour of free time everyday since he manages his time or so he says.

Yeah no for sure time management is necessary, but my point was that you’ll always have something else to do no matter what - if your friend gets 30 minutes to an hour after finishing all school responsibilities he likely uses that extra time to study for extracurriculars or work on a project outside of school.

When I meant free time, I meant like playing games/relaxing. Like me and him hang out over text for the 30 ~ 1 hour every other day playing games or just talking about life.

Anyone else received a personalized Deerfield email saying that the application is complete?

Was it from your admissions officer?

My interviewer.

I got one too from my interviewer.

I didn’t end up getting a Deerfield interview (online filled up quick). The admissions portal says the requirement will be waived once all other materials are in but I’ve submitted everything and still no update. Wondering if I should check in with admissions and make sure everything’s in order.

I would.
