The Official M10 2024 Freakout Thread

Thank you for the reminder @Sroo! To try to embrace every day we made a paper chain with all of the milestones, events, birthdays, holidays, and vacations between now and a big Summer vacation we are planning. The one date that we did not call out on there is M10. By focusing on all the great things that are going to happen over the next six months, we’re hopeful that we don’t get too myopically focused on a few outcomes on a single day of the year.

Something interesting I just realized: March 10 is Spring Forward for the US. Good thing to note for international applicants like me who’ve been dealing with time zone differences.

Good luck y’all! 55 days till M10, I think. We can make it!

53 days left for me!

Good luck everyone!

Since it is hard to chill, does anyone have information about how hard it is to gain admission to Beaver Country Day School? It is a DS near Boston and known more for creativity than academic rigor.

My child has applied, and it is hard to read our odds. Her lowest grade is A- and SSAT 90 %ile. No points here for diversity. We should be confident about her acceptance, but we hear that they get a lot of applications, likely because many view as a safety school. Any idea how to gauge the odds?

It looks like they add 40 students, but we feel like everyone applies there. Do they try to identify and avoid accepting students who view it as a safety school? Do they have low yield? Any idea as to acceptance rate?

Well you can always send a first choice letter if thats really your top choice, but I’m not sure how much it’ll help since these days a lot of kids send first choice letters to every school they’re applying to.

The counselor at my kids’ former middle school said Beaver was the only school they never could predict and said their peer counselors thought the same - completely random to them

Sorry, that isn’t remotely helpful to your situation though!

Generally I think that those SSATs are very good as are those grades…but those comments do make me think they may play yield games?

We were told essentially the same. Hard to predict - and could go either way

Some questions

Did you guys hear from the schools that the applications are complete/

Any letter or holiday cards from schools post-interview? I heard from some applicants from prior years and they got some cards but didn’t necessarily predict a positive decision. Reading tea leaves I am sure.

50+ days before M10 and probably schools reach their decision in under 50 days.

I’ve heard my application was submitted from a couple of my schools. Everything is submitted in SAO/Gateway but stuff is still getting uploaded to the school portals.

Nothing really extra beyond the typical mailing list stuff. I will say that I contacted one of my AO about a question I had and I guess it reminded her that I existed. Less than an hour later she sent a follow-up to my parents with some materials they talked about in the interview. Not reading into it or anything, but it really is up to you to make the connections.

The holiday cards are sent to everyone, like I got one from the Director of Admissions at Groton and got some other letters from interviewers and other staff.

Good luck

Mixed on notification of completeness. Some sent emails - like Commonwealth and BUA. Others were radio silence, but we can track on the online portals.

Some got personally signed letters and specifics of what they found interesting about the candidates. So more specific. But as I said it’s like reading tea leaves. M10 will reveal everything.

Maybe the Director at Groton liked you.

It’s traditional for Groton to send these.

I doubt the letters mean anything especially since a lot of the kids who applied get letters.

Groton sends lots of handwritten notes. Their acceptance letter to each student is a thoughtful letter about why your student. It is a very special touch.

After in-person tours/interviews, we did get handwritten thank you notes from the interviewers in some cases - e.g. BB&N, Nobles. We assume that they sent these to all applicants and that we should not read anything into it. Does anyone have a. differing opinion?

Yeah, in my letter from the director he talked about the things we talked about during the interview. Like small little personal moments we had like talking about his sons or us talking about a specific class in my life and the teacher in it.

It’s a very thoughtful.
