The official Pakistani Thread for the class of 2013

Are you in US right now? I thought you said you’re in St Patrick’s, Karachi.

I did my A Levels from Pats now I am in US and studying for AP Diploma (8 APs). When I came to US last year I had SAT Reasoning 2170 and I applied to Cornell and they rejected me outright but now I have my A level results and improved SATs plus the enrollment in the AP courses so inshallah this tym.

That’s good. You should definitely call the adcoms at Penn and get this all cleared up! All the best…

@SSK 91: ya…great shot…hope that i can make it through to Wharton too and c u there.

@vandit
thnx bud
I hope u gt in too.

im a pakistani, living in the middle-east
i just took the january SAT, and got owned on it (1830)
my gpa is a 3.9 as well
im currently a junior
taking 3 aps this year (statistics, economics (macro and micro))
taking 4 next year (calculus, physics, english lit, chemistry)

how the HELL do you guys get above a 650 on critical reading?
i seriously need to study for the SAT this summer… maybe recommend some books for critical reading? (I had barron’s 2009, but that is just HORRIBLE)

btw… that ali moeen nawazish guy was one of my friend’s roomies in summer school this year
and he was telling me about how “unsocial” and smelly he was… haha

oh and i thought i might as well add more information
im an international cricket player (2 years, captain 1 year) and played domestic for (about 6 years, captain 3 years); I teach young children how to play cricket, assistant coach for the under-13s

ive been representing my school’s basketball team for over 5 years now (I hope i’m the captain next year :P)

represented my school’s forensics and debate team for two years

have represented my school’s MUN team for the last 4 years (in regional conferences)

took part in INJAZ for two years (its like this small-business competition)

NHS (I might be the president next year)

Amnesty International

Mu Alpha Theta President (Math Honor Society)

Work Experience: worked at an accounting firm in NY, going to work at an insurance company this year (also in NY, haha)

Would you guys think that these EC’s will make up for my low SAT score? (btw I AM going to take the ACT in april, and I have been taking practice tests and scoring from around 30-32)

P.S. First choice Wharton, second choice Stern (INSHALLAH, haha)

@upenn4life
Welcome!
For the SAT I thnk tht the best book is grubers…it has by far the toughest tests.
But dont ignore the barron word list as vocab is the best way to improve reading score in a short time.
As far ECs are concerned they supplement the academics and cannot substitute thm unless it is a major hook or u r a recruited athlete
I wish u success in your aspirations!

i agree with SSK but your academics are prety good already
Improving your score From 1800s isnt that hard. One can usually improve maths and writing scores exponentially by putting in some solid work. You say you will devote the summer to SAT … so hopefully the SAT wont remain a problem.
everyone who has met Moeen Nawazish has something nasty to say about him… i wonder why that is.

anyone know how long it takes for Toefl results to come in (the ibt)… how long after the testing date

haha unfortunately i only have to improve my reading and writing scores
i got a 760 on math, and still ended up with an 1830 (goes to show how bad my CR+W score was)
and its not like im horrible at english… i have never gotten anything less than an A- in any english classe, and i’ve attended an american school for the last 7-8 years

oh and i have another question… many people say upenn prefers the act over the sat

how would it look if i sent an act score of 30-32, an sat score of about 1900, and two sat2s (math2 750+ and physics 700+)?
would they look at my act score more carefully or would my chances be affected by the low sat score?

check my stats
SatI 2370(cr-770 w-800 maths-800)
sat II- physics-800 mathsII-800 chemistry- 800)
AP- calculus AB, calculus BC, physics C)
A level- Physics,chemistry,maths,further maths,general paper,Biology,economis( A grade in all papers)
Rd applied college-Cornell,Diciknson,Darthmore,Franklin & marshall, Bucknell,MIT,Yale,Stanford, University of Pennsylvania,St. lawrence university, occidental, Reed, lehigh, Bates,Berea)

You are a real show-off dude. I hope you toned down your application.lol

huh?
was that referred to me or sunilthapa? :S

Na. Sunil i didn’t mean to offend.

I swear this thread is getting depressing. Just as when I think I am doing good, someone comes up with better stat. So people who have stats like me, Essays matter a lot!! Stats are not the end of the world. So does you luck. My brother got rejected from every college he applied to, and almost when he had given up hope of acceptance, he got into MIT. And his SAT scores were mediocre too. It is just your luck and fate. Good luck everyone!

You make your own luck. William Jennings quiet rightly pointed out that “Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.”

@whenwillitend:Essays count a lot, bro.Heard someone from Aitchison with a SAT I<2000 got into Yale because of his essay on how he saved a person from drowning. Pretty inspiring stuff. So your chances are on.If your brother got into MIT, I am certain you know a thing or two about effective essay writing. Just keep your hopes high.

@sunilthapa: Your stats may be perfect, but believe me, if you told

Dick-in-son
Franklin & marshall
Bucknell (seems you don’t require much aid, if any)
St. lawrence university
Occidental
Reed
Lehigh
Bates and
Berea

that you’re also applying to Stanford,MIT,Dartmouth,Cornell or/and Upenn you’ll be rejected outright. And if you fill their supplements using generic answers, then too you are out in the cold. Especially if you require a lot aid (which doesn’t seem to be the case). So watch out.

Dick-in-son. LOL! Just the reason why none of my friends applied there! Its better to study at Walla Walla University than to be at Dick-in-son. LMAO! :D
