The Official Pakistani Thread for the Class of 2014

@Inert101: We’re repeatedly discussing how issues need to be an integral part of elections in our country, but what we are overlooking is that the overwhelming majority of our population is illiterate. Without eradicating this illiteracy, you can’t focus on issues during an electoral process. Try putting yourself in the shoes of a poor Pakistani - would you care about anything other than food on your table? Issues are part of politics in countries like the United States where the basic necessities of most are already met.

Also, about that website you were talking about. A website along those lines already exists. If I’m not mistaken it’s hosted by the FLP (Future Leaders of Pakistan). I’m not sure whether it focuses on issues though, but as I said, it’s impractical to assume that issues will be at the center of Pakistani elections in the near future.

There’s lots of talk about the negativities of the ratta system that is prevalent in our country. As I’ve said in a previous post, the very absence of ratta in the American system of education is what makes their system so successful. We need to model our education on the US system; we need to give importance to discussion and critical thinking as opposed to repeated test-taking. The benefits America has repead from their system of education are there for everybody to see; we need similar success in the field of education.

Okay, that was hard to do; typing on a phone while in the car is not easy to do. Excuse me if there are any spelling mistakes - put them down to the shabby keyboard on mobiles.

[Admission adopts need awareness for internationals : The Williams Record](<a href=“The Williams Record – The Student-Run Newspaper of Williams College Since 1887”>The Williams Record – The Student-Run Newspaper of Williams College Since 1887)

@Samtjt: Thanks for the correction. Why aren’t there any practicals in 1st year? That means if a province’s education is going down the drain, the federal government cannot do anything about it? That’s a BS system :@ And ok, the syllabus cannot be dictated, but they should atleast set the same standards so that the different boards can be interchangeable OR are at the same level. sigh

@Inert: Another problem is the feudal system in Pakistan. Seriously, F*** it and F*** those feudal lords. Every year, the same guys are elected again and again and again, because they F***ing OWN whole villages! They are the Maharajas! They order the people to vote for them, and they get 100% votes! We should learn from India regarding this, they nationalized everything. I would be a better President than any of these fools!

Again, there was no ratta system in Federal Board when I studied it. I’ve completely forgotten how to rote learn :stuck_out_tongue: And I don’t know yaar, I agree that it does enhance the reasoning abilities, BUT knowledge? I studied Moles in Chemistry in 9th grade, and my Pakistani neighbour studying American system studied the SAME thing in grade 12! I’ve seen their books, easy ****, unless you take AP, which is another story =) And oh, he has never studied Matrices =P And he is NOT an exception. He got into Queen’s, smart guy :P

I have no problem in developing such a website if others volunteer.

lol u guys are catching me on the highest posts :)

Well, the point concerning the American system, it’s what you make of it. You can take chemistry in 9th grade, or you can take it 12th grade depending on your choice. I know some 12th graders in my school that took Geometry in 12th grade, which I was studying in depth way back in 8th grade, so you can’t really say that the American system is easy.

Which is better NUST -khi or Nust- isl ??

@Inert: Ok, but what they do study is limited then? Someone taking Chemistry in Grade 12 isn’t really going to learn any further than that in high school. So wouldn’t that supposedly make the Pakistani system better? Pardon my ignorance :)

@Dark_Angel: I’ve never seen anyone go to the Karachi campus :P

Sorry, made the correction…Williams one was a wrong addition.April fool going on…

@talaltq: Well, if you wanted to learn further than that, than you can take an AP course or in certain instances you can enroll in community colleges (students in the US do this all the time) which give you a level of detail that is similar to the detail available in an AP course. Do not forget that an AP course is supposed to be at the level of an introductory college course (even if that is not always the case, it is still more advanced than most basic high school courses).

Also, talaltq, you talked about nationalizing everything, and I’d like to comment on that. Another problem I find in our country is that when somebody is succeeding, everybody around the said person discovers an innate urge to bring this person back down to earth; to cut, hack, do whatever to this person as long as they come back down to everybody else’s level - it’s as if everybody has an itch to cut this growing, blossoming tree down. Such an attitude is definitely not needed if we want to progress and reach the heights all of us envision and talk about. You have to remember that when people do succeed - in this particular instance since we’re talking about nationalization, we’re talking about financial success - they do so after working hard and after going through the system. Now, it is a totally different thing if you can prove that somebody has cheated their way through to financial success, but if you can’t then I mean you shouldn’t really have anything against a rich individual. The truth is, we need to be proud of our fellow citizens, of the work they have done, we should look at others’ examples of success and learn from them instead of beating ourselves about it and doing whatever we possibly can to bring them down, instead of bringing ourselves “up.” With specific regard to nationalization, we’ve tried it in the past and it has failed miserably. The benefits of capitalism are there for everybody to see (yes, I do acknowledge that there needs to be a balance - the US let their banks run riot with crediting and the world suffered because of that, but with a certain amount of monitoring, capitalism is certainly the best economic system). Trying nationalization again during an age of complete capitalism will simply set us back a few more decades and will reverse the little good work that has taken place over the past few years; nationalization breeds decadence and we certainly don’t need more of that.

ok :)

I was only talking about nationalization with regard to the Feudal lords. There ancestors have owned the lands of huge villages for hundreds of years, from before the partition. And thus they maintain control and as I said earlier, are the Maharajas of those villages. “You won’t vote for me? OK, your daughter is my wife and you will work without pay for a year in my land!” or worse, imprisonment! I was suggesting that we should nationalize some of that land so that the feudal lords loose their power.

My apologies for not being clear, made you write sooo much  But that was very interesting to read =)

@talaltq: As I said, the US system is what you make of it. You study only what you want to study. If you don’t push yourself, well, then you get into a crappy university. That’s why colleges always look at GPA in context - that is, they always consider the difficulty of your courses, because someone taking challenging courses has demonstrated strong personal initiative as well as ability. Besides, in the US many high school students even take ‘Honors’ courses, and as for APs, well, we already know what those are like.

Also, about your concerns with the depth of courses if you’re only taking them in 12th grade: people who want to challenge themselves will take that course earlier, say in 10th grade. In some schools, they would take this at the ‘Honors’ level. Then, to further challenge themselves they might decide to take the AP level course in that subject, which can be quite rigorous.

About nationalization, we can’t simply ‘seize’ land, because that would deprive some people of the right to land which we cannot do in a capitalist society. In a free market the government cannot just take away land or property from citizens. However, perhaps imposing laws that would punish people for ‘labor abuse’ would help, or something along those lines.

btw samjt does this mean that Williams did not turn blind aware? all part of april fool’s?
