<p>@anth.santos: There is an uptick, in the short run (like over a year), but in the long run (like over a decade, a half-century, or more) the numbers run more evenly.</p>
<p>What happens is that you get a biggish quake like the Easter one in Baja, or like Northridge in 1994, or Landers in 1992, or Loma Prieta in 1989, etc., and that quake then sets off a ton of aftershocks for the reasons I mentioned above. The aftershocks decrease over a time rate of days, then weeks, then months so it skews the number of quakes for a given year. If there is a year without a large earthquake in a region, the year can seem “slow”. In reality, the rate is pretty regular over the long term.</p>
