The Official UCB Fall of 2014 Decisions Thread

Has anyone been able to to Callisto (Cal jobsite)?

Nope… “Your record with valid registration status not located in CalNet Directory or Bear Facts.”

CS70 is tricky if you’ve never done discrete math or probability before. If you have done discrete, and you’re the sort of person who enjoys writing proofs, it shouldn’t be too bad. I don’t know what the summer problem sets look like, with some professors they’re only a couple hours a week, and others will be 20+ hours per problem set.

61A is a very weird class, it’s shallow, but it covers a lot of different areas of CS. Starts off with python, goes straight into recursion, basic lists/trees, OOP, implementing OOP, logic programming is in there somwhere, then it’s Scheme, and writing a scheme interpreter. So, it doesn’t get too indepth on any one topic, but it moves quickly and there’s a lot going on.

You might also want to look into 61BL. It’s a ridiculous amount of time in class (3 hour labs 4 days a week, plus 2 hours lecture) but if you’re familiar with Java/C++ and you know data structures from CC, it’ll look lot like the courses you’re familiar with, and the projects are kinda fun. Technically 61A is a pre-req for 61B, but it’s more that you should know how to program and understand OOP concepts. But if you’re also missing B, it might be less stressful over the summer.

Oh, and for those worrying about summer grades, you can see past grade distributions on schedulebuilder[/url”>https://schedulebuilder.berkeley.edu/explore/"]schedulebuilder. Pick a department, choose a course, click the “grade distributions” tab at the top. You can’t see summer grades on there, but it should be similar to normal semesters.

It might help to call an adviser and verify that the 3.0 rule holds for summer, especially if you’re planning to take CS classes. I don’t remember my adviser steering me away from Edge, but I’m not sure I took the time to ask if it was a bad idea. :P

@failure662 Thanks for all the info! The summer program definitely something that was pushing me to choose Cal over UCLA (I’m still leaning towards Cal). I am just trying to figure out what combinations I can do with CS/Math and Econ, because I’m not 100% of what I want to major in completely.

My school doesn’t have squat for CS classes that are convenient to take, but I’ve taken an intro class when I was in HS at the same CC that was pretty worthless.

I’ll definitely call a counselor though and see what they have to say. I emailed mine a few days ago but haven’t heard back.

Any media studies majors planning on taking Transfer Edge to knock out Intro to Media Studies in order to declare the major in L&S by this fall?

Similar to a lot of you, I haven’t had a break with classes and whatnot ever since I graduated high school. I kind of thought about kicking it back a bit this summer and focusing on other less academic, personal projects before the big transition. Yet again, this seems like a really good academic opportunity and I kind of want to double major so I’m not sure…

@Loyshi Yup. Same message that I’m receiving…

@CalBruin‌ @CooCooCaChoo25‌
Just got the email confirmation for the transfer weekend!

@Loyshi‌ I got nothing. Guess that means I’m not in

@campfireweekend‌
Idk if it’s because i emailed and asked when we’ll be getting our confirmation. The email said that the official confirmation will be sent out today.

Edit: Nvm, that was the official confirmation sent out at like 3am. The other email sent later today is just containing details of the event

@loyshi Oh well. Have fun!

@campfireweekend‌
Did you fill out a Google doc form about yourself and preference? Or just filling a form with your email?

Did anybody get that email about the Facebook group for Spring admits? I was admitted for Fall (at least it says that on my application) so I’m not sure why I got that email.

@CalBruin I got that email too. I’m guessing everyone who was admitted gets it even if we’re not spring, lol.

oh ok good haha I got a little nervous for a second. Thank @ocnative‌!

I got it also and I am Fall lol

@Loyshi‌ I also got an email confirmation!

@Loyshi Just got the email that I’m on the wait list

Help help help! When I set up my email, my display name wasnt my name. It’s definitely my account, but for some reason someone else’s name (whom I’ve never heard of) is displayed as the first name. ■■■? Who do I even contact about this?

@UCdreamGE‌ If it’s just the email display name that’s wrong, you can change it by signing into bmail, clicking the gear icon -> settings -> account. But that does sound a bit fishy that it’d have someone else’s name in there… I think the Cal1Card people are in charge of CalNet accounts, but I’m not sure if they’d have an explanation for you.
