The Official UCB Fall of 2014 Decisions Thread

Anyone go to Chancellor’s Welcome? @ocnative ?

Yeah I went to the Chancellors’ Welcome! It was disappointing. First, the name of the event itself is a little misleading. I expected Chancellor Dirks to make an appearance and speak at the reception but he didn’t even show up. With the reception, the speeches were pretty interesting. They emphasized Berkeley’s prestige a lot and even make some remarks how they are the best public university in the world whereas UCLA is simply numero dos. It seems that no one really followed the policy of only bringing two guests because I saw a lot of admitted transfers bringing the whole family…lol. There were two speeches by current students. One of them was great and told us to take advantage of their Transfer Center on the Berkeley campus.

After the reception ended, they had everyone walk to a resource fair in front of Dwinelle Hall. WOW it was so disorganized because things got hectic quick. It was a large crowd of transfer admits and the tables were narrowly squeezed all together that it made getting information a hassle. I managed to visit each table and skipped a few like Veterans or International Students.

To conclude, there were no freebies @randombookie‌. There was no complimentary breakfast or lunch. There were no tours :frowning: I should’ve gone to Bruin Day, lol.

@ocnative, I went to the reception too. I also expected a tour and food… The only freebie I was able to get was one of the buttons. I expected a lot more and felt like there was not a lot of really helpful information provided. :/

@ocnative‌

When I went to UCLA’s AAP Day, Chancellor Gene Block delivered a speech. It wasn’t even named “Chancellor’s Welcome” unlike Berkeley’s but he decided to show up anyway lol, and he delivered another speech for Bruin Day. Just another reason that UCLA > Berkeley. :smiley: There were tours of all kinds, including a STEM tour, library tour, and even a housing tour(I could only go on the housing tour, but it was great. We even got to visit students in their dorms…they were pretty nice and the dorms were quite alright). UCLA was even nice enough to provide a complimentary breakfast and lunch, which my family just loved. I didn’t have any, though. Wasn’t too hungry.

Oh, and UCLA’s AAP/Bruin Day was nicely organized. They had their ■■■■ together. :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :stuck_out_tongue: :P

They also held some workshops for admitted transfers throughout the day, discussing such topics as how to improve one’s writing skills at the writing center, how to adjust to life at UCLA, etc.

You reeeaalllly should have come, @ocnative. UCLA was on top of their game with that event and I’m not just saying that because I love the place.

Aw, damn it… :((

@Cayton, UCLA wins this round.

@ocnative‌

lol, “Chancellor’s Welcome.”

OK, done rubbing it in.

@ocnative, thanks for the info! :slight_smile: do you anything about declaring a major at UCB? b/c I think everyone is only admitted to the college, so I was hoping to change my major once I get there haha…

did you make your decision yet?

Even though I’m going to Cal, I think it was kinda expected who the winner was beforehand.

Berkeley: Welcome Reception

VS

LA: Bruin Transfer Day

The name of the events says it all… LA had a whole day dedicated to this. I think a reason for such a smaller event is because it’s dead week and Cal’s graduation is the week after.

I might go up for a visit, but I’ve been up there before, I had a cousin that went to Cal a few years back. But I don’t know if it will lean me any certain way. I’m waiting for hear back from some people at Berkeley, if I don’t get good answers I’ll be going to UCLA.

Please share your insight and wisdom with us @CSB111!
The only person I know who went to Cal is a man who went in the 60s that works at my CC. He is really cool and gave me some insight, but I’m pretty sure things have changed a bit.

@AnthroFlo Well when I went up there I liked it, it is a change of scenery to what I am used to now but didn’t really check out the campus. There are in fact a lot of homeless people which doesn’t bother me, but it may bother some. Berkeley is so distinctively different than most of SoCal (although it does remind me of like old town Pasadena a tiny bit). My cousin absolutely hated Cal, and insists I go to UCLA (his brother is an athlete there). But that isn’t going to force my decision.

Also, you may want to consider that UCLA sets aside room for transfers. I just got an email back from the Econ department at Berkeley, and they told me I would be guaranteed a spot in one of the 4 classes, but possibly not the one I want and not even in the correct order.

@csb111 i am missing a stat class and an Econ class not offered at my CC. Should I email the econ department as well? Tried emailing my admission counselor, no response.
I’m just afraid if i don’t get these 2 classes i don’t get to declare my major.

@CSB111
What do you mean by saying that UCLA sets aside room for transfers?

@moriartee I’m assuming you are missing the classes to declare like every transfer, so no. I want to Econ 101A, but its already full. But you are guaranteed you will get Econ 100A, 100B, 101A or 101B.

@AnthroFlo Well I know UCLA makes room for a transfer class. But an example of how UCLA and Berkeley are different, Berkeley has already had their fall classes up for a while and one of the classes I wanted to take for my major is already full. UCLA doesn’t have their classes up for registering, which makes it better for transfers.

@CSB111
I think its a little strange for Cal to post their courses so early.
If you SIR are you able to sign up for classes already?
I just think its odd because if a transfer student has an impacted major, are they just supposed to take random classes their first semester?

Edit: I believe I found the online postings for Cal’s fall courses.
I’m browsing and while the anthro classes seem to have people in them none of them appear to be full yet. I saw one upper division course with 250 seats in it and one with only 15.

Did anyone else go to the socal reception today in Costa Mesa? :stuck_out_tongue:

@ocnative I was there.

Cool! What did you think of the event? @freetofly112

@ocnative I thought it was alright. I stuffed my face in those little horderves, met a few people and exchanged some info (good to have contacts up there), and I got a cool decal thing.
We totally could have talked to each other and not even have known hahha

I was there too! I don’t know if I talked to any of you but I probably did haha; I’m the transfer from UCI just in case I actually did meet one of you
