The Official UCB Fall of 2014 Decisions Thread

@cayton I hope you are wrong!!! haha look at what UCSD has done though, it gives UCLA hope.

@Cayton‌ aww you turned down berk :frowning: if only i had that option even though i wouldnt anyways lol

@JewBacca‌

haha, lol, if I’m right and UCLA beats Berkeley in the rankings someday, then a lot of Berkeley alumni will be pretty mad. Many will have sacrificed enjoying some of the advantages of going to UCLA in favor of going to Berkeley to enjoy its enhanced prestige, only to find, years later, that UCLA now rivals/surpasses Berkeley in prestige while still retaining its other advantages unique to being in Los Angeles. :D

But, in all seriousness, the improvement of UCLA as an institution benefits everyone, as does the maintenance of Berkeley’s preeminence among public universities. Also, watch out for USC; that school seems to be improving at an astonishing rate. It might just be the Stanford University of southern California in a couple of decades if it continues to improve at the rate that it has. It used to be ranked 50 or 60 just twenty years or so ago. Now, it’s ranked #23 on USNWR.

California has a lot of great schools for some reason, lol.

@Bookham‌

Berkeley’s not for everyone. I found that out some time ago, so I just couldn’t SIR to that school.

@JewBacca‌

I forgot to mention:

UCLA’s been improving a little in engineering, sciences, and math over the past few years in the USNWR rankings. It used to be #9 or #10 for math, now it’s #7, not far behind Berkeley, at #2.

In biology, it went from the #24~#25 a couple of years ago to #19 recently. It’s been moving up a little in physics, too.

The process is already happening to surpass Berkeley, slowly, but surely. MWAHAHAHAA!!

You should major in plotting against Berkeley, you are good at it, @cayton lol.

I don’t think UCLA will surpass Berkeley in terms of prestige/rankings in the next ten years, but I think that it’s likely UC San Diego will become close to UCLA within that time frame. All three schools will be extremely comparable.

@calbro‌

I too doubt that UCLA will surpass Berkeley in ten years. Maybe in 20 or 30. A much stronger chance in 35-40 years.

I don’t know…UCSD still has a lot of catching up to do and doesn’t have as many top 10 programs as UCLA does. It’s also kind of weak in the humanities and in some social sciences, compared to UCLA.

But it seems to beat UCLA in quite a few science and engineering fields. It’s made a lot of progress in many fields in just 50 years or so as a member of the UC system. It already outranks two older UC schools, so I suppose anything is possible.

I’m an Econ major.
Which makes choosing Berkeley kind of risky, since it’s capped and I need 1 Stat class and 1 Econ class for the Fall to declare the major. If I don’t get either one of those I’m screwed.
Food for thoughts?

Is anyone from socal going to use the Golden Bear Express for CalSo?

@ocnative , yes.

Golden Bear Express sounds fun!
Too bad I don’t live in SoCal…

@AnthroFlo‌

lol, it sounds like a good way to know some other students during that six hour drive.

Have you decided on a school yet?

@ocnative I think I might, but I really prefer flying up there. Which date did you pick?

@calbro‌ I chose Friday, June 13th. Have you chosen yet? Also, what’s your major calbro?

I’m a psychology major.

I picked June 13th as well. The date kind of blows because my college’s commencement is on that day, but I think picking classes and student orientation is more important than it.

It sucks, since I can’t even attend orientation to secure my 2 pre req classes. I’m out of the country tight now and won’t be back until August :(

@ocnative
Nope :D

No decisions have come as of yet but I went to the Berkeley campus last weekend, walked around. Got a good feel for the place, discovered more than I have the last 4 times I’d been there :stuck_out_tongue: I’m flying down to UCLA this weekend to walk around, get a feel, explore the city.

I will have a decision by Monday, I am giving myself Monday as a deadline.
Everybody wish me luck, send me good vibes, because I can not delay this decision any longer.
Time to become either a Bear or a Bruin and not look back.

@AnthroFlo‌

I’ll save you the trouble so you can decide right now.

UCLA.

UCLA.

UCLA.

UCLA. :)

@Cayton
I’ll take your advisement into careful consideration :slight_smile:
Have you ever considered working for the UCLA undergrad admissions office?

Guys, got any advice for an Econ major?
It looks like it’ll be easier to declare Econ at UCLA than Cal.
