The Official UCB Fall of 2014 Decisions Thread

@CSB111 Oh, okay thanks! I guess it’ll be better to take either 100/101A first. I’ll definitely take a lot at those notes. I was never very good at LaGrange multipliers. Yeah I was still in deep consideration about UCLA but just jumped the gun and SIRed at Cal.

Are you guaranteed Stats? She only told me about the Econ class.
I can’t go to any early Calso dates. If I can go to one, it’ll be the latest one.
Sucks that my admission advisor is on vacation. Been emailing everyone and got no real details.

The Stats classes are huge with many sections, you will definitely get in. It just might not be at your preferred time. I wouldn’t worry about getting classes in your case.

And that’s Berkeley, I’ve accepted that you can’t get an answer from anyone in a timely manner.

Berkeley won’t stop calling me. @-)

@Cayton‌ They would like to have a discussion with you regarding the corrupting of our innocent youth with your deviant UCLA propaganda and jazz music

@Freetofly112‌

I’ll corrupt whomever I please with the truth that UCLA > All other universities. >:)

@csb111 I am pretty sure Berkeley doesn’t enforce prerequisites, so you would be able to take econ electives regardless of when you took A/B.

Don’t listen to @ocnative, @AnthroFlo.

UCLA can offer you so much more than Cal. :)

Well all the people I’ve emailed have been pretty good about sending a reply ^^*
Though I’m still worried.

@Cayton: please try to sell me on UCLA Econ. I’m all ears. Still undecided and I’d like your opinion.

@moriartee‌

Eh, I’ll be honest: Berkeley’s econ department is ranked higher. #5 vs. #15.

But rankings don’t matter for undergrads. Go to the school that suits you best.

I’ll speak on both because I wouldn’t say I am biased at the programs, and haven’t chosen one.

Berkeley does have a really great Econ program that prepares you for a PhD or graduate studies, with the math oriented route. I feel there aren’t as many class choices as UCLA, but the classes seem to cover a lot of information in great depth, but I’m not interested in a lot of the topics. I know that there is always research going on, and it is fairly easy to get involved.

I’ve heard the Finance Econ class at Berkeley covers the equivalent of three classes at Haas.

For UCLA, at least for Business Economics, you get a much wider variety of classes. You take accounting classes, econ classes, the 106 series, management classes (this can fall under accounting) and an english class. The major requires only a few more classes than Berkeley, but it is on the quarter system, so you usually want to pick up the Accounting Minor, computation minor or something else you’re interested in. But I’d say this is more time consuming than a double major at Cal (which is fairly easy if you have lower division requirements done).

Rigor wise I can’t comment, but I know Berkeley can have a generous curve in a lot of Econ classes. But the classes offered between both schools are a bit different.

Recruiting is pretty equal, but its about who you know/what you do. It is easier to break into SF from Berkeley tho. LA would be equal from what I’ve seen.

^

@CSB111 It sounds like you’re more interested in Cal’s program than the one at UCLA. Yaaay.

@Cayton Lucky, I want more calls from Berkeley :frowning:

@ocnative Lol, I like stuff about both programs. I’m just having commitment problems. I might just flip a coin if it gets too close to the deadline.

@CSB111‌

It’s worth noting that UCLA has a program where you can get your BA and Master’s degree in Econ, probably in 5 or 6 years if you do it right. That might be worth looking into for anyone considering getting a Ph. D. in economics. I’m not sure if Berkeley offers a similar program for its econ students. It’d be great if it does.

@ocnative‌

What I’ve noticed is that some of the callers knew that I was a minority(African-American male…and one who studies philosophy at that) and talked about how great a place Berkeley would be for me.

Not too many black guys at Berkeley…about the same percentage of them at Berkeley as the percentage at UCLA, which says a lot. They likely want to do everything they can to increase the number of minority students there.

Thanks for your replies guys. If I could get Econ at Berkeley, I will look into double majoring in PoliSci. I have taken my PoliSci prereqs at community college and it seems fairly easy to fulfill both in due time. I’ll have to ask a counselor more about it once somebody replies to my email.
You guys gonna stay at the dorms? How are dorms at Cal? I’ve been wanting to look for an apartment since I started high school :confused: not really a dorm person.

…Um, this might be related to why UC Berkeley really wants me, a black student, to go to their school: http://www.eastbayexpress.com/oakland/why-black-students-are-avoiding-uc-berkeley/Content?oid=3756649&storyPage=2

It’ll explain why they won’t stop calling, lol.

@moriartee‌ The dorms vary pretty drastically. If you’re in a triple in a highrise, you’ll probably hate it. If you get Wada/Martinez (apartment-dorms, upper division) it’ll be much nicer and most people I know liked living there. So, depends on what you get. If price is an issue, dorms are typically more expensive than living off-campus.

Also, the econ people I know didn’t have trouble getting their classes, and all but one managed to declare. So don’t be too scared, so long as you study hard you should be able to get in.

@failure622 thank you so much for your reply. The only reason I’m truly freaking out is because I’m international and I might not be able to arrange my travels to go to calso. I’m afraid by the time i get my adviser codes all the classes i need would be full.
Therefore, I haven’t SIR -> my paperworks aren’t being processed -> can’t arrange travel -> might not get classes -> unable to declare Econ -> undecided between this and UCLA -> haveN’t SIR.

This is a paradox, really. I am so stressed out. Doesn’t help that my admission counselor is on vacation :confused:

@cayton at first I was going to make a joke about Berkeley simply wanting to get their mojo back from their heyday when the Black Panthers were all that, but then I read the article. Kind of shocking this is going on at Berkeley of all places, although the vibe at every campus has moved away from inclusion and activism to something else, I guess.

@lindyk8‌

Yeah, I find it difficult to believe it myself. I would think Berkeley would be more liberal and inclusive than that. Calling a black student the N word on campus? Geez.
