***The official University of Michigan Chances Thread:***

Pianista-I sent my SAT scores before I took the SAT II’s, so they haven’t been sent. I don’t know if they will help much, and I don’t want to hold up the process if they won’t.

Ok, what would someones chances be with theses stats?

UM-GPA is about 3.87-right now…might go down by a tad, but only by .05

[ *) Location/Person:
[ *] State or Country:Michigan
[ *] School Type:Public…2nd largest feeder school to U of M (Nearly 80 students)
[ *] Ethnicity:Indian
[ *] Gender:Male
[ *] major strength/weakness:extracurriculars/GPA

Extracurriculars:
3 years Soccer (captain as freshman)
1 year Varsity Football
4 years Track (2 years varsity)
4 years law club
2 years National Honors Society
400 hours community service at cultural association
100 hours of community service at Temple
Obama Campaign Intern

Questions:

 1. I’ve heard that being Indian will hurt my chances? Is that true?
 2. Is it true that about 80% of all Early Response decisions will be given by Black Friday?
 3. If I do get deffered/waitlisted, then what are my chances If I have a 3.2 UM GPA (im taking 4 AP’s along with Varsity football) for the first semester?

4) U of M’s average GPA was a 3.72 last year, so that means half the students have less than that…how come we never hear of those students getting admitted? How did those people get in? I know there has to be students with scores somewhere in my range who got in. right?

Thanks alot in advance

1) Being Indian will neither help nor hurt your chances. Asians and Caucasians are given no special consideration one way or the other.

2) I don’t think it is possible to know the answer to that question for sure. I would assume that close to all ER applicants will hear back from the school by Christmas day.

3) If you are deferred, your Senior year grades will be very important. A 3.2 will most likely not cut it.

4) The average GPA may have been 3.72, but that does not mean that 50% got less than 3.7. In fact, the GPA distribution for last year’s class went like this:

28% 4.0 GPA
52% 3.9 GPA or higher
67% 3.8 GPA or higher
86% 3.6 GPA or higher

As you can see, roughly 75% have recalculated GPAs of 3.7 or higher.

And that’s for students who enroll, not for students who are admitted. The admitted stats are generally even higher because the yield rate for students with stronger stats is lower than the yield rate for students with weaker stats.

Where did you get 3.72?

Average GPA for enrolled class:
2007-08 GPA=3.80 (USNWR)
2006-07 GPA=3.75 (common data set)
2005-06 GPA=3.72 (common data set)

The GPA distribution Alexandre provided is from the 2008 freshman class.

How much of a chance do you think I have of getting in?

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA for now

[ *) Location/Person: International School in China… Went to a highschool in NY for my freshman year
[ *] State or Country:China
[ *] School Type:International
[ *] Ethnicity:… ok this is the hardest question for me to answer… mixed ethnicity… half taiwanese half caucausian
[ *] Gender: Female
[ *] major strength/weakness: my SATs SUCK. I SUCK at SATs. Really… my grades compared to my SATs are soo off… Plus im taking the most rigorous course of study… ever… IB Diploma Program. And I have pretty darn good grades.
[ *] Other Factors/questions: Since my SATs are embarassing enough for me to post against everyone else on this website… will this really kill my chances for getting in? Like people told me my ECs are great and I have great leadership skills and attitude/work ethic which are developed in my essays and my grades… just not my SATs …
btw I cannot retake. My parents complain that I have had enough sats.

another question… is it better to put down “asian american” or “caucasian” or “other” and specify exactly what ethnicity I am… will one improve my chances better??

thanks!

no chances for me? I am on the previous page.

trickstylez: good GPA/test scores, but what was your course load, and when did you apply?
