***The official University of Michigan Chances Thread:***

@jonthom99, you look pretty competitive for both LSA Honors & even some major merit-based scholarships if you apply EA as long as your essays & recommendations are good/decent.

@ifnt7ju Your SAT is slightly above average. For international student, it would be a low reach.

@liomio2 Your ACT is slightly above the 75th percentile while your GPA is around admission average for CoE. It should be a very high match for you from OOS due to the low admission rate.

@billcsho Thanks! Is there by any chance a place where I could find the admission statistics for OOS applicants?

@liomio2 There is no separated stat for OOS. There were some estimates previously that the OOS admission rate to be around half of the in state admission rate. But the OOS applicant pool keeps increasing every year so the admission rate may become even lower. Currently, around 80% of applicants are from OOS.

@billcsho‌ What would be a suitable SAT score for an international student?

[ *] College (Engineering.):
[ *] ACT: 33 composite (34.25 superscore. I know this doesn’t apply to u of M)
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.5 Weighted: 4.2
[ *] Rank: N/A
[ *] Other stats: Took an extremely rigorous courseload. One of less than 30 juniors to take ap calculus bc as a junior and my high school has over 4000 students. I have taken 6 AP classes and all honors up until junior year, and as a senior, I am taking another 5 APs and 2 Honors classes (including Honors Calc 3 which is higher than AP)
I got a 5 on AP US history and a 4 on Calc BC with a 5 on the AB subscore. All other scores are mostly 4s.
AP Scholar with Distinction
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Very Strong. Hold 2 big leadership positions, cofounded an engineering club that fixes problems at my school, and JV athlete, and nationally ranked chess player
[ *] Essays: Strong
[ *] Teacher Recs: Very Strong
[ *] Counselor Rec: Very Strong
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): I won homecoming king, if that counts for anything. I have placed in the top 20 in the country at speed chess.
[ *) Location/Person:
[ *] State or Country: Illinois
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: Indian
[ *] Gender: Indian
[ *] major strength/weakness: Extracurriculars are very strong. My ACT score is fairly strong, in my opinion. My GPA is a little week, but I have taken a very difficult schedule.
[ *] Other Factors/questions: What are my chances for U of I Urbana-Champaign Engineering?

Thanks so much for the help. I will chance back.

I also forgot to mention that I am a member of a Robotics team that made it to the Worlds Championship and placed in the top 25 in our division. Also, my computer froze for a brief moment while typing so I got confused. No my gender is not Indian, lol. I’m a male. Thanks

Reposting it…and I’m interested in chances about getting into LSA really. I’m confident about getting into music, but not sure about LSA…

I’m an international student, so I might need some help…chance me please :)

Here are some of my stats:

SAT: approx 2250 (retaken, no score yet)
SAT II: Chinese (first language…) 790, Maths II 760, Chem 720, French 530 (should I send it?)
2 self studied APs: 5(Music Theory), 4(Calculus AB)
No GPA in school, but my raw scores are actually pretty bad. Top 25%
School ranks top 5 in country, VERY competitive

Straight As in Stanford EPGY/OHSx English Lit and Maths courses

7A3A1B for GCSE, 3A3B for GCE AS level, 2AA for GCE A level predicted
(People said GCSE results =3.9 GPA, and GCE A level=3.85 here on CC)

EC:

 1. MUN chair of the biggest local MUN club
 2. Zonta Z International school club VP
 3. School music club President
 4. School debating club committee member
 5. School Chinese History club VP
 6. Music: Various international awards recipient, studying part time in a professional music skl, local record holder, knows 5 instruments
 7. School magazine editor

 9. Co-founder of a local online orchestra
 10. Interned at an investment company
 11. Many voluntary works (teaching public speaking, visiting elderly houses, volunteer at music concerts…)

Essays: mediocre. About music, guess that’s predictable
Recommendations will be awesome, because I have good relations with my teachers and school counselor

Applying to Dual Degree program. LSA and music

I’m aware that I’m an international student (on full pay). I know that if I’m an in state or American student, my stats might probably give me a big chance, but I have no whatsoever idea for the international standard. Will my ‘hook’ of music help me in?

How much of a hope I have? Chance me?

@ifnt7ju Aim at the 75th percentile for a better chance from OOS and overseas.

@highschooler3948 Your ACT is around the admission average for CoE last year while your GPA is far below. It would be a reach for your from OOS.

@alafae SAT 2250 would be near the 75th percentile. LSA should be a high match to low reach depending on your real score.

Please note that it’s hard to accurately chance you all solely based on stats because it all depends on how the “holistic” admissions go down.

@ifnt7ju You seem to be a high match to low reach since you’re an international applicant, but who knows, I may be wrong. I guess you’ll only know your real chances once you get back your admissions decision lol. I’m sure they’d understand the reason why you didn’t take any AP classes, so hopefully that won’t be against you. Based on what I’ve seen, it’s much harder for international applicants to get into US schools, but if you write stellar essays, I’m sure you’d stand out. By the way, if you’re really interested in going to college here, I’d advise you to apply to a wide range of schools, including several safeties (schools where your stats are well above the admission averages). Nowadays, I’ve started to stop chancing people as much since it’s not really effective, and I’ve been swamped with tons of work. In fact, I just now finished my essays! Nobody can predict who will and will not get admitted. My advice to you is to work hard and do your best; nothing is impossible. Good luck!

@alafae I’d advise you to check out “On Writing the College Application Essay, 25th Anniversary Edition: The Key to Acceptance at the College of Your Choice” by Harry Bauld as it’s truly an invaluable resource for writing these essays. If you put together an excellent application, who’s to say you don’t have chance? Good luck!

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA undecided
[ *] SAT (one sitting): didn’t take
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent): didn’t take
[ *] ACT: 23 (Just took it last Saturday my second time and I know that I got at least a 25. OUCH)
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 3.9
[ *] Course load (# of AP/IB/H, special courses, etc.): 1 AP Composition (the only advanced class offered at my school although I am taking the hardest course-load possible)
[ *] Rank: 15% (like the 4th in my class, very small class though. about 30 kids)
[ *] Other stats:
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Baseball for 4 years (won league title junior year), Quiz Bowl year for 4 years (won our tournament or came in second all 4 years), Volunteered with Special Olympics Basketball at their practices and games for my junior and senior year. Spanish/Art Club Junior and Senior Year, Yearbook Editor for 1 year, National Honors Society my junior and senior year, Student Council junior and senior year, band freshman and sophomore year
[ *] Essays: I feel like I’m usually pretty decent at writing essays, so It will be decent.
[ *] Teacher Recs: They should be pretty strong. I have 4 of them.
[ *] Counselor Rec: Not entirely sure
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): not a thing. my parents didn’t go to college??
[ *) Location/Person: NorthWest Ohio
[ *] State or Country: Ohio
[ *] School Type: public school, and a terrible one at that.
[ *] Ethnicity: Caucasian
[ *] Gender: male
[ *] major strength/weakness: I am extremely passionate about learning and want to impact the world in a positive way./ACT SCORE
[ *] Other Factors/questions:

The fact that some people are asking for their chances with a 34 on their ACT and 9 AP classes with all 5s.

@billcsho‌ and @Fri612‌ Thanks for chancing! I’m considering between LSA and Ross. How much chance will I have if I do Ross? I know it’s harder but not sure to what extent it is…

@uofmPlease Your ACT score is too low. UMich would be a high reach for you from OOS.

@alafae Ross pre-admit is definitely a reach for you. It is very competitive and the admission rate is even lower than CoE.

@billcsho What ACT Score do you think I should have with my other stats in order to get in?
