***The official University of Michigan Chances Thread:***

@billcsho - Well, that is pure nonsense since UM only gives the stat to one decimal place and she gave it to 2. How do you know that the actual average GPA wasn’t 3.85 and they rounded it up to 3.9, and therefore her GPA is actually slightly above the average? You don’t. Try to be more accurate in your statements.

@fallenchemist You may argue about it. But the admission average for UMich overall last year was indeed 3.85 (3.83 for 2013). I would not be surprised at all that the admission average GPA of CoE to be 0.07 higher as the mid 50 ACT of CoE (31-34) is 1 point higher than UMich overall (29-33) in 2013 as well.

You may or may not be surprised, but the fact of the matter is you don’t know. Don’t say with authority that which you do not know. You are misleading people when you do. Her GPA rounded to one decimal place is 3.9. UM CoE is 3.9. The best you can say is it seems to be a match. What I am saying is factual for the information given, and what you are saying is pure guesswork.

Let me know if you have better information. 3.9 has been CoE admission median for recent years. You may consider that as anywhere between 3.85 and 3.94. In any case, 3.88 is near the admission median which would not change the chancing. Even if it is right on the average, it would not be a match for that student due to the around admission average SAT and low admission rate of CoE (20% for 2014). At the end, it is not a pure guesswork as I am basing on published data even it may not be accurate down to the second digit after decimal point.

[ *] Other Factors/questions: Pretty much the reason I’m questioning whether or not I’ll get in: In my dual enrollment class I have around a 50%. However, most kids in the class, HS or college students, are failing and the teacher is notoriously bad (his rate my professor grade proves this). I know this isn’t really an excuse to have a bad grade, but I still have one. I may be able to bring it up to around 80 if everything works out in my favor- basically if I get A’s on the rest of the tests and quizzes and the final. Does this hurt me enough to get me denied?

@wrestler0320 What are grades of your DE classes? College grading can be very different from HS that you don’t really need 90%+ for an A. I would not worry about it too much. Your ACT score and GPA are good, so it should be a match for you from in state. In addition, you should be able to get at least the Regent scholarship for the top 525 in state students admitted. You may be eligible to the Engineering Scholarship of Honors too.

@billcsho‌ It’s pretty similar to hs grading- 90% and up is an A, 80% + is a B, 70+ C, 60+ D which is passing. Thanks for the helpful words though, I just didn’t know how much Michigan takes dual enrollment into account. One question though, do you know if we have to send our dual enrollment grades? I’m planning on taking this class again in college, so I wouldn’t really need the credits.

Congratulations fallenchemist on your Super Moderator status. While you might be an expert on admissions data for Tulane, you certainly are not one for Michigan. I commend billscho for his thoughtful and polite analysis for those students who really want to have some idea what their chances are. While we all know that it is just estimated guesswork and not be taken as gospel, it is after all the purpose of this thread.

@tedonan You should be an easy match for LSA from in state. Your GPA, test score, and course rigor are all great. Are you interested in the Honors program?

@predent Are the SAT section scores CR/M/W? CoE put more emphasis on the Math section score. Your GPA and course rigor are good. ACT 33 is around the admission average last year and the admission rate was 20%. So for OOS student, it may be a very high match to low reach for you.

@billcsho‌
Yes that is the SAT score set up.
Awesome! Thanks for the input. With the 33 ACT My score dist. was 35 English, 36 Math, 31 Reading, 31 Science. Does that make any difference?

@predent That’s great ACT section scores that would supplement your SAT scores. Did you apply EA? I think it is a rather high match as your ACT is almost 34 which was the 75th percentile in the last few years.

@billcsho‌
Yes I did apply EA. Sounds awesome!

@billcsho yes I am interested in the honors program, although I am still a bit unfamiliar with it and will have to do some more research. Isnt it quite hard to get into?

@tedonan I think you are competitive for the Honors program. If accepted, you may then choose the Honor Housing in main campus.
