***The official University of Michigan Chances Thread:***

@Much3learn Your uwGPA is very low for CoE while your ACT is around the 25th percentile. UMich CoE would be a high reach for you from OOS.

@Billcsho

Do you know whether being female who has taken BC Calculus helps at all on a CoE application? That was the primary reason that I thought it might be worth a shot applying. I know that some engineering schools are trying to attract girls who are strong at math.

@Much2learn Female applying to CoE with strength in Math does help to certain extend. Even with this bias, there are still only around 25% female students. They are not likely to lower the bar further.

[ *] Teacher Recs: 1 from Math teacher, will have her for 2 years, we are very close and talk about all sorts of things not related to school
1 from Econ teacher; he helped me through DECA and I am in an economics club with him, so we have spent plenty of time together

@Much2learn be careful of relying on female into engineering to get you “bonus points.” While the job market is yet to improve and has room to hire females, when news of this broke a couple years ago girls applying to engineering of every race flooded some schools… I know a 4.6w gal that took AP Calc BC with a 5 on test (and 10 other APs including Physics), great ECs and still struggled to get into strong engineering programs when they thought it would be much easier “being a girl.”

Thanks, @Blueskiestoday. She definitely isn’t relying on it. She is a fairly agreeable kid and has liked most of the schools that she visited, and is not rankings conscious, so I am confident that she will be admitted to a school where she will be happy.

I was just wondering whether that might help for Michigan, I know it helps at some schools. It sounds like Michigan does not care about it, which is fine. There are a many other schools where she will fit. I am confident that someone will take her. lol

Michigan is a great school for the right kid, so I keep checking, but I am 0 for 2 so far. Maybe number 3? Who knows.

@Much2learn It does help in UMich CoE, but it would not do miracle.

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA

[ *] Minor Awards:
National French Contest-4th National, 9th National, 10 National, 22nd National
National Latin Exam Gold
Stonehill College Book Award
Skating stuff
Most likely National Merit Semifinalist
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc):
Competitive Figure Skating (9, 10, 11, 12): I’ve been skating since I was a kid, my main EC. 8-10 hours a week. I’ve won some medals at some relatively large competitions, Liberty, Moran Memorial, etc. I’m not like national level though lol. I skate right after school so as a result I don’t participate in a lot of clubs.
Learn to Skate (11, 12): I help teach Learn to Skate at a local YMCA
School Discussion Group (10, 11, 12): I’m not that involved in this tbh because skating is sometimes on the same day
Volunteering (9, 10, 11, 12): School events, nursing home, National MS Society, and at the library, over 100+ hours
[ *] Essays: good? I hope?
[ *] Teacher Recs: probably good
[ *] Counselor Rec: generic, we have 500 kids in our grade and I’ve spoken to my counselor exactly 4 times and those were to set up my course schedule
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): The most unhooked person you will ever meet
[ *] State or Country: NY
[ *] School Type: Public
[ *] Ethnicity: Asian
[ *] Gender: F
[ *] major strength/weakness:
Strengths: test scores, good GPA
Weaknesses: lack of APs before senior year, weak ECs, no major awards
[ *] Other Factors/questions:

@emilyskates UMich LSA should be a high match for you just because of the low admission rate. You are a great candidate. With the 26% overall admission rate, OOS admission rate would be in the teens this year, not far off from some Ivies.

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): engineering
[ *] SAT (one sitting): Didn’t take the SAT
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent):
[ *] ACT: 33 E/32 M/33 R/31 S/36 W/8
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: Don’t know how to calculate this but I have a 3.7 on a 4.3 scale (93% = 3.7)
[ *] Course load (# of AP/IB/H, special courses, etc.): 8 H classes, 4 APs (Including senior year) (AP Euro, AP Physics, AP Gov, AP Calc AB)
[ ] senior year schedule: AP Gov, AP Physics, AP Calc AB, Honors Latin 4, An English class, Theology, Computer graphic design.
[ *] Rank: School doesn’t rank
[ *] Minor Awards: Just some Religious medals awarded by the bishop for Boy Scouts
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc): Around 100 service hours at a therapeutic horse riding facility. Engineering Club, National Honor Society, Lacrosse, I also design, build, and fly my own model aircraft (fixed wing, and multirotors)
[ *] Essays: Hopefully good. Plan to talk about my struggles adapting to highschool as a freshman and only getting a 3.3 freshman year. Then I will go on to talk about how I made a turn around and got a 4.2 my junior year. ( sophomore was in between at like a 3.6)
[ *] Teacher Recs: My physics teacher. In his class I was one of the very few to grasp material quickly and I worked with fellow students to help them understand.
[ *] Counselor Rec: unfortunately my counselor retired at the end of my junior year but supposedly she will be capable of writing an recommendation that is good.
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): Nothing really, other than my brothers went to Ohio State so Im breaking my family norm.
[ *] State or Country: Ohio
[ *] School Type: Private Jesuit
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender: M
[ *] major strength/weakness: Weakness: No major awards, Not many AP’s, Lower than optimal GPA.
Strengths: Good test scores. Already designing and building my own airplanes (want to go for aerospace engineering)
[ *] Other Factors/questions:

@BDonny Try to bring up your GPA and test score. You may want to recalculate your uwGPA in UM’s way to see if it is any better. Right now, UMich CoE is a reach for you. ACT 33 was the admission average last year.

@billcsho I can not seem to find a Michigan gpa scale where I can convert percentage to a gpa. Also, because I have to send in my transcript up to the end of my junior year and my senior class schedule, I don’t see how I could raise my gpa any more. I guess I will just have to apply and wait.

@BDonny You just count all As (including A- and A+) as 4.0, Bs as 3.0, etc.
For UMich, it is fine to apply to EA even with weak stat as they will only defer rather than reject those are not accepted. You may submit updated transcript after your first grading period or first semester if that would help you over all GPA.

[ *] College (LSA, engineering, etc.): LSA (Ross)
[ *] SAT: Didn’t take it
[ *] SAT IIs (if sent): NA
[ *] ACT: 34 (34E, 35M, 30R, 33S)
[ *] UM unweighted GPA: 4.0
[ *] Rank: 23/326 (my school ranks based on a 100 point scale, and getting low As in electives has hurt my class rank a ton)
[ *] Other stats: Taken all honors, also AP World History, AP Lang, AP Chemistry, AP US History, and am taking AP Calculus, AP Physics, and AP Literature Senior Year.
[ *] Subjective (ECs, special circumstances, etc):
Beta Club VP, largest club in county.
President of SkillsUSA
I won a couple outside awards for my science fair project in 10th grade
[ *] Essays: Wrote one about me not caring about school in middle school and getting terrible grades, then shaping up to make something out of my life.
[ *] Teacher Recs: Haven’t looked, but got them from the best writers in my school, one is actually a Mich fan.
[ *] Counselor Rec: Probably something generic
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): dad is in the Air Force, so I’ve gotten to live all over the United States, and even in Europe.
[ *) Location/Person:?
[ *] State or Country: Georgia (the state)
[ *] School Type: public
[ *] Ethnicity: White
[ *] Gender: male
[ *] major strength/weakness: GPA would be a strength, but class rank would actually probably hurt. However they’d see that my grades have improved a ton since freshman year (95 average to 98 average) and that I perform considerably well in harder classes.
[ *] Other Factors/questions:

@pdizzla Ross pre-admits very few freshman each year. It will be a reach for anyone. Work hard on your Michigan essays adn be sure to touch on the business aspects of your background. Admittance to LSA should be a high match / low reach just because of the very competitive nature of out of state admits. Your class rigor, GPA and ACT are all on target. Good luck!

[ *] Essays: Talks about overcoming a weakness I’ve had my whole life, pretty good I guess
[ *] Teacher Recs: 1 will be very good, the other will be generic
[ *] Counselor Rec: Most likely good
[ *] Hook (legacy, recruited athlete, etc.): NA
[ *) Location/Person:??
[ *] State or Country: New Jersey
[ *] School Type: public
[ *] Ethnicity: Chinese
[ *] Gender: male
[ *] major strength/weakness: internship is a huge strength, did really cool things in it; SAT scores may be a strength, weakness is GPA, got 3 b+'s Junior Year; another weakness is that I did bad on AP exams so I’m not sending my scores
[ *] Other Factors/questions: APPLYING EA OUT OF STATE

thanks!!

[ *] Other Factors/questions: do i have a shot?

@hb7901 You do have a shot. ACT 34 is at (or near) the 75th percentile for UMich CoE. The admission stat for this year is not out yet but the mid 50 is likely to be a touch higher than the last 2 years (31-34) as the average for admission last year was 33. How is your Math section score?
The CoE admission rate is expected to be ~20% this year. It was 27% when the UMich overall admission rate was ~32%. This year the UMich overall admission rate is 26%. For OOS students like you, the CoE admission rate would be in the teens. So it would be a low reach for you. You definitely should check their NPC to see if it is affordable to you. The current CoA for CoE is $55-$60k per year.

@billcsho my math ACT score is 35 and the npc showed I would get a lot of money from the university should I be accepted just based on income

Definitely apply. You are from ND. I can’t imagine Michigan gets a lot of students from that state. Your location, very strong scores, and gender should make you a match in engineering IMHO.
