The Official WUSTL Decisions Thread

I know that personally I didnt show much enthusiasm, I wrote a why washu essay and went to the interview but I never did visit or call. I was just upset because after all of their mailings I had assumed that I would be a shoo-in, I seriously got like 50 pounds of mail between 8th grade and now. oh well, congrats to those who got in!

They do need to lower their mailings. It got seriously annoying when they started after Duke TIP.

I really wanted to go to this college (still do, matter of fact!), but I realize that I most likely will not. This was actually my first choice college. I know I’m pretty average, but I thought I would have a chance. For all of those accepted, congratulations! For all of those wait listed and rejected, I feel your pain.

i’m a little confused. i have the lowest SAT/ACT scores of anyone who has posted and my EC’s were less than impressive and somehow i got in. kind of makes me feel like i’ll be the dumbest one there.

I thought these results were rather interesting, so I decided to spend a few minutes and compute averages. The average SAT/ACT (apologies if I made any mistakes entering numbers) for the admitted students was 1482; the average for the waitlisted students was 1461 - a 21 point difference. Certainly, surprisingly small (although I don’t have enough knowledge to say that it’s small in comparison to other universities). Additionally, I would imagine that the waitlisted average was skewed down by a few people for whom WUSTL was a large “reach” - the average of truly competitive waitlisted applicants was probably a bit higher, and perhaps not any different from the admitted average.

Of course, the SAT (or the ACT) can’t explain everything - there are plenty of other factors (although the SAT is the most easily standardized), and one of the weaknesses of this thread is that no room is included to explain extracurricular activities, awards, or other credentials.

However, the fact that SAT/ACT distributions for both pools are so similarly distributed, in addition to some very strange individual decisions - for instance, a student admitted at MIT (which is absurdly selective) but waitlisted by WUSTL - makes one wonder about the process.
