The Outfit You WOULD Wear Everyday If You Could

Maxi dress from Soma with built in bra in case someone stops by. Shrug or cardigan if it’s too chilly for sleeveless. I’ve been known to sleep in them as well. Clark’s flip-flops.

Yes, that’s me. Especially the hair (lol)

First, clothes must be very old. I do not like new clothes. It would be yoga pants (not the tight type, loose), the sleeveless t-shirt withe the long sleeve t-shirt over. Everything is loose and 100% cotton…and sleepers.

Funny thing is I really enjoy clothes shopping and picking out bright, unique pieces-- retail therapy… I have an especial weakness for shoes. GMTspouse can tell when I’ve had a particularly rough week at the office. I come home w a box of new shoes (it’s “dangerous” to work in an office tower connected to a shopping mall).

But invariably, I end up wearing pretty much the same boring clothes at work & home-- a lot of khaki, black & grey. And I wear the same boring, old shoes.

When I die, some anthropologist could write a PhD paper trying to decipher the meaning of all the unworn exotic stuff in my closet.

V necked cotton T shirts and shorts, sandals when going places (of course barefoot in the house). So nice that Florida fits my favored wardrobe! Need larger sizes so most fancy brands not only aren’t worth the price to me but also don’t come in my size.

When I worked it was scrubs in the OR as an anesthesiologist so I never got fancy for rounds (why bother with complicated clothes you’re only going to remove).

Up north I would include long sleeved T shirts, sweaters and knit long pants (often hard to find them long enough) plus slippers in cold weather. No shoes in the house- grew up that way, neighborhood where raised kid did that and H is from India. Need something on my feet on hot concrete and rough grass here.

There’s a photo of me, my sister and two neighbor girls from when we were 2-4 years old and chose our summer outfits. Three girls were shy and wore dresses. I had a flannel shirt and shorts plus looked straight at the camera. Never was a fashionista.

Bootcut black yoga pants, baggy tshirt (long sleeves or short, depending on the season, often a v-neck). Cardigan or fleece jacket. Tevas in the summer, sneakers in winter, LLBean wool slippers in the house (I have cold feet), Keens if hiking. Rarely wear makeup; if I do, it’s a little mascara. My eyelashes are pretty much gone. I’ve never felt comfortable looking really pulled together and am really body conscious (not in a good way) from all my years of being too heavy. Though I have decent legs, I don’t like the way they look in capris. I like a longer line.

The drawback to this style (or lack thereof) is that my baggy clothes don’t tell me when I’m gaining weight.

What is NYDJ? Have I missed another fashion trend?

I wear jeans or cords in winter with button down or long-sleeved white tee shirt under cashmere cardigans/blazers if going out, and under fleece indoors.

Spring/summer cotton capri/white jeans or shift dresses/short skirts (never shorts) with some tee shirt or knit tank top. Have purchased far too many J. Crew blazers these past two years and now wear them in lieu of cardigans all year. (Wool & velvet in winter, cotton and linen in summer. I had grown so tired of wearing cardigans for fifteen years.)

I wear flip flops or Capri sandals for as many months as I can get away with it, but otherwise Tod’s loafers or really unattractive & clunky clogs. I avoid boots if at all possible, but winter in CT means that I am forced to wear them during active snowfalls. My feet are wide and very few shoes are truly comfortable.

I wore dresses when I was in elementary school, but I could scale the tallest fences and climb every neighborhood tree in those dresses. LOL. I was a Pippi Longstocking-type tomboy.

I still love dresses…

I have what my H calls my “daytime jammies” - yoga pants, a men’s T shirt and fuzzy socks. We have a tradition on Sundays - the minute I get home from church I put on the “daytime jammies” and spend the rest of the day reading the Sunday Times. We order takeaway for dinner - ah, the perfect day!!!

NYDJ - Not Your Duaghters Jeans. They are so comfortable on me and don’t stretch out like knits. I have never tried yoga pants. I do wear a valour pants and hoody set in the winter AM. Somtimes it stays on past morning

Definitely running clothes…full length tights with a sweatshirt or quarter zip fleece in the cold months and capri running pants with a t-shirt in the warmer month.

Funny to read that some (me) are always barefoot and some actually don’t like being barefoot. Who are you people? LOL!

I read Born to Run a few years back and even switched to running barefoot after reading that, and my knees never hurt when I run barefoot but do hurt when I run in shoes! So I’m going with what nature designed. Hmmm….wonder what this implies about bras………

My husband’s “I give up” outfit is one of three pairs of flannel lounge pants and his oldest tee shirts (~ 25 years old) with all the tags cut out. Worn when there is not a chance he’ll be leaving the house for the rest of the evening.

My go to outfit used to be jeans and a black turtleneck in the winter, khaki shorts and a black tee in the summer.

I wear more forgiving colors in tees and turtlenecks now, but still with with jeans or neutral shorts, or loose yoga pants or athletic skirts with built in undies. And comfortable shoes, Tevas the second I can get away with them in the spring, otherwise Clarks, Dansk, or Vans in colder weather.

“If I had to, could I run? Could I walk ten miles? Could I climb over a fence? Right now?” that’s what guides my clothing choices. I hate the thought of my clothes or shoes dictating how I move.

Not that I’m into parkour, or anything. I seem to be anticipating a zombie apocalypse or an action movie erupting around me at any moment. LOL

Abasket, now you’ve made me think about this!

At home in the winter, I will wear leggings, tech tee and a fleece zip up. Have them in different colors. When I go out my usual uniform is skinny jeans, a tank and cardigan. Again I have tons of different color tanks and different cardigans mostly in black but I’m trying to bring colors into my wardrobe. Sensible shoes.

In the summer, shorts and tees. Or I have these prAna capris which I have in different colors. Flip flops. If I’m going out a variation of my winter wardrobe, capris, tank and cardigan, I wear more color in the summer. I like nice bright colors.

What I wish I would wear more of is tunics and leggings. I have a few but for some reason I feel uncomfortable in them. I’m more self conscious than I should be and afraid of some snarky comment from my mil. I wish that I could not let her comments affect me.

@deb922, wish I could loan you my sweet MIL for a confidence boost. She would compliment you in your tunic and leggings!

Deb, your MIL is probably just jealous that your legs look so good in those leggings!!

Do you have a link to the prAna capris??? (is that how it is spelled or is that a typo?!)

I thought of this thread yesterday when I got home from work and was changing for at home stuff - dinner, laundry and a little yard work. I put on my Adidas capri leggings, a New Balance short sleeve tech shirt and an Athleta long sleeve tech material top and thought - yep, this is fully how I want to feel everyday in this weather!!

Thanks everyone for the nice comments. I think sometimes I worry too much about what other people say and less on what I want my personal style to be.

Abasket, I really like these capris http://www.prana.com/bliss-capri.html. They are super comfortable and really lightweight. Sometimes in the summer I want pants not shorts but nothing too heavy and these fit the bill. I bought mine at the end of last year on sale but unfortunately I’m not finding that now. These would be great to travel in.

@deb922, I’ll have to look those capris up next time I’m in Ann Arbor at Bivouac - I see they carry them. Also, for what it’s worth - if you have tried other Prana items, they are a 6pm vendor:

(ok, not to get off topic, but who is size S - this is an adorable Prana jacket! - I’d buy it in a heartbeat if I was! http://www.6pm.com/prana-chantal-jacket-plum-red)

I am in leggings and an oversized sweater (its chilly this morning). In the summer I like to wear the tshirt material knot dress things that go over a bathing suit
