The Pajama Game

The other thread about dressing casually at home got me thinking.

Am I the only one who doesn’t wear/own PJ’s??!

Seriously, I don’t own a pair of “official” PJ’s. The closest thing I have is a pair of Life Is Good lounging pants in the winter (steaming mugs of hot chocolate on them - adorable!) and a couple pair of casual lounging elastic waist shorts in the summer. No matching tops and bottoms. No nightgowns. Not a robe in my closet!

Yoga pants, yes. Camisoles, yes. Soft “girl” tshirts, yes.

My husband owns NO PJ’s. Sweatpants yes. Athletic shorts, yes. None of my three kids owns a pair. Sweatpants, yoga pants, stretchy shorts, yes.

How out of the norm is my family!!!

My partner owns one pair of pajama pants- which I bought him and wear because he rarely does.

Me? I own more pajamas than regular clothes. Many of my “pajamas” though are just sweats and loose tshirts/hoodies.

High five Romani! But that’s it - I’m talking traditional PJ"s. A nightgown or a top/pants that match as PJ’s. From the PJ department.

I wear night gowns in bed. I wear robes over the nightgowns out of bed. My husband wears regular old fashioned pjs, which I buy him. He also wears robes.

Men in our family wear pajama pants/bottoms and t shirts. The women usually wear pajama sets - knit or flannel. Although I do have footie jammies, but the feet are too small. We don’t wear robes unless we have company.

I wear flannel nightgowns (own four) in the winter and pajama pants (own 3) and T-shirts in the summer. I also own summer nightgowns (two) and robes (two). D and S often had friends sleep over during high school days - our house was closest to their school activities. H wears shorts and T-shirts. He did not make breakfast for all the sleepover friends…

I have a whole wardrobe of pajamas. I have cotton ones, fleece for when it’s really cold, and light weight ones for summer.

I got a great UGGS bathrobe for Christmas, and I have a shorter Victoria Secret satin, fleece lined robe.

This is the first year in many years that I didn’t get new PJs. But I probably have 10 sets!

Our family has a tradition of getting new jammies on Christmas eve. My now grown-up kids love it and even asked if their SOs would get them if they come for Christmas.

Nope. I don’t own that ensemble. I do have couple of terry cloth bathrobes but black yoga pants and black or grey drawstring sweats is as close to PJ bottoms as I get purposely really so I can look somewhat dressed. Husband and son are the same while daughter does wear actual PJ pants with a t-shirt as do most of the girls in this area but they also go to the mall like that so they may not count as pajamas, really.

I honestly have no idea where my pajama pants start and where my sweatpants end.

I suppose my fuzzy pants are all “traditional” pjs?
Oh, and I have gone to the grocery store many a time in my comfy pants. If I’m going to do something I hate, I might as well do it in comfy pants

I used to own nightgowns, but I would always manage to trip myself… (don’t ask, I don’t know either)

ETA: I’ll usually buy just the pants from pant/top sets. The tops never fit me right

Now that music is going to be going through my head all night long…

My pajamas consists of large t-shirts from vacation locations, that go mid thigh. Once I have showered at night I put on the t-shirt and then sweatpants and sweatshirt in the winter, and lightweight lounge pants in the summer, but only sleep in the t-shirt. I think all my sweatshirts and sweatpants are hand me ups from my daughter! I have robes, but haven’t had one on since I was last in the hospital 20+ years ago.

My husband sleeps in a pair of flannel boxer shorts only. My son sleeps in boxers also, but owns a robe because he thought they were cool. I think he has worn it a handful of times; not sure where it is now. My daughter when home visiting sleeps in a skinny t-shirt and boxers.

As you can see, we are not a pj family!

My kids and their Significant Others all get PJs, their one present to open Christmas Eve, a hold over tradition from earliest childhood so they all look nice and matchy in the Christmas morning present opening pictures. My mother did this. My grandmothers did this. I asked my husband whether we should discontinue the practice a few years back and he was absolutely horrified and flabbergasted at the very thought.

I have two pair of flannel pajama pants but no matching tops. I sleep in a tank top or t-shirt and underwear year 'round. I put on the flannel pants or knit shorts when I get up in the mornings and throw on a sweatshirt in the cold months.

DH has a pr. of flannel pants(winter) and some nylon shorts(summer) that he wears when he gets out of bed in the a.m. He sleeps in boxers. I own a winter weight bathrobe. I rarely wear unless it’s unusually cold.

I wear pajama all the time at home but my wife almost never. She could go out with whatever she wears at home but I could not.

DS dressed more like me before college but now he sometimes wears his “go-out” dress at home (too lazy to change his clothes) but sometimes he wears in his old way. He learned a “lesson” recently that he had better wear a little bit more formally when he video-chats.

Basically, I like to wear clothes that are very very loose. It makes me really “uncomfortable” when I see DS now wears tight and snuggle shirt and jeans (this was not what we “taught” him before he went off to college) but I manage to keep my mouth shut. I could also not understand why he needs to roll up the long sleeves (so that the forearms are not covered.) What’s the point here?! Why not just wear a short sleeved shirt then?! Isn’t it really uncomfortable to roll up the sleeves when the shirt is already tight? Again I keep my mouth shut.

Another aspect of life at home is what shoes people wear at home. We change to different shoes (actually change to slippers) as soon as we came home.

1 Take off bra. #2 Get in more comfortable clothes. #3 Sometimes it is PJs. even if 6:00.

H rarely, never, lounges in anything but street clothes. He may go down stairs in the morning to get coffee for us in PJs, but that is it. He only wears pjs because others are in the house.

So sounds like majority IS for PJ’s but there are some radicals like me who don’t own them!

I cannot remember when I owned a nightgown. Or a robe. Had a pair of slippers years ago - no more. Funny that the trends seem to run in families. Either a PJ family or not!

It’s REALLY HARD to find matching PJ sets at reasonable prices around here that are 100% cotton (and those that are synthetic are really hot in HI). H is still wearing some that we bought decades ago. He definitely prefers a proper matched set. Me, I wear whatever flannel bottoms I get that no one else wants or when I travel, I use yoga pants. Around the house, all of us are barefoot but I generally don’t remove my bra until I’m about ready to go to sleep or if I’m ill and lounging around. D wears flannel pants or shorts around the house and baggy tshirts. S wears shorts or judo pants around the house and for sleeping in HI but just loose jeans and tshirt in colder temps.

I have tried nightgowns, but get tired of them riding up when I toss and turn and night, so don’t use them. Flannel pants and yoga pants stay put, so aren’t as troubling. I generally wear long-sleeved tshirts and if I get cold, add a vest over it.

This is really interesting that so many do not own pajamas. I have a lot of night gowns and really nice pajama sets - favorite is a foulard print silk pajama set. Mostly wear the nightgowns in summer as they are mostly sleeveless and light weight. Some are long, some are short. Children all have pajamas as well. I will wear yoga pants and a cami if I am lounging around the house but always change at bed time.
