The Random Questions thread

I’ve never done a custom paint by number but have done numerous ones over the years. The hardest was the one I did during the pandemic (as below) - very tiny fields. By the end I was doing what my husband called artistic license. It looks great but I don’t think I would do one that hard again.

I’d be more inclined to get your friend a custom jigsaw.

Now that is a thought, didn’t even know they had those!

It’s bad enough that flight attendants are mandated to instruct you how to use your seatbelt, but why does this lesson occur AFTER everyone is told to fasten their seatbelts?

Yes! We did it as a square canvas. They hang on my wall ◡̈ indint Remember them being super intricate, but my kids did them.

How does customers duties work both in terms of cost and process (delay)?

There are dishes that we fell in love with in Germany. (And our current ones are in need of replacement). I have found a company that will ship them, but I have to pay customs.

Not sure if it is worth the hassle, but they are super cool!

That’s perfect! Kind of what I thought I might do and send her maybe next Christmas, far enough away from her loss so it’s not too sad. You did a fantastic job!

I ordered a watch band from Germany a few years ago. I had to pay customs at the postoffice shipping center in town. It was an extra step to get it but I don’t recall it being too hard.

Thanks! (my kids did them.) I found the woman who turned the photo into paint-by-numbers on etsy. DM me if you want her store.

@rockymtnhigh2 thanks for letting me know that! its a bit overwhelming!

I’ve done one of these. S did one for me as a gift - a picture of all of us together. If you look at it from afar, things are fine. But if you get closer, the clarity is obviously not there - nothing like a photo. I did a landscape picture of a pond that I had taken - that looked much better. I think it’s easier with landscapes, rather than faces.

A dog’s picture would be ok I think. It does take a long time and is incredibly detailed.

I think most realize it’s not going to have the clarity of a photo and really an impressionist type of work, but the thought and the personal touch is what I hope would be appreciated.

My DIL did one of their dog (it was a gift) and it is really good! I am very impressed.

Any idea what to get for someone who’s going to be 80, and travels a lot, preferably something consumable but not perishable? (So it could be delivered at their convenience and it would be OK if they are leaving soon).
Liquor/wine are not options.
Something that’s travel related might also be OK, but it needs to be easily returnable to a place that has many other options.
Probably 200 or so bucks is maximum we want to spend (multiple siblings).

Thanks in advance

Do they drink coffee? You could do a coffee bean subscription - they can start it whenever they return - and fill it for the months they are home.

It’s not a “thing” but they would have multiple times to order depending on what you gift. I got this one for my daughter:

I like that idea, but neither that nor a breakfast food box (pancake mix, maple syrup, etc.) were deemed good enough.
Current idea is a GC to a restaurant in the town they live in, which is a fine option, but something more “original” would be fun.

Maybe hire a chef to cook in their own house??

How about a really pretty pashmina (maybe personalized) to keep warm on flights but rolls up small for the carry on/personal item?

It’s a he…but thanks.

We don’t know him well enough and we are too far away for that option, but sounds fun.

A good pair of travel binoculars? A coffee table atlas or globe? Aerial view books of favorite destinations?

If the person takes photos with his phone, an Aura frame might be nice.
