The Random Questions thread

When does “divergent” become the “normal?” In other words, if 80% of gray squirrels are now black squirrels, is gray now divergent or is black still divergent since they were originally gray?

That’s an interesting question, and it comes up a lot in human demographics. If whites are not the numerical majority, then they are a minority.

Actually in HI, we have no majority ethnic group. Japanese are the largest % of the population but we are all minorities. Whites still have privilege, as do males.

I think this deserves a thread of its own.

Random Questions is more for short term needs/discussion - I think your question will NOT be those!!

I think it’s a basic misunderstanding of what the term means. They hear the privilege part and immediately think, I’ve had a hard life, too, I grew up poor, etc. But of course that’s not what white privilege means - it doesn’t mean you’ve lived a wealthy, charmed life. It just means your race never disadvantaged you. It doesn’t mean you’ve never faced problems in life. Everyone has. Your race just wasn’t one of them. I think that’s the issue - people just react defensively to the idea of someone thinking they’ve been privileged when they haven’t felt that way and so they miss the real point.

And I think then this is compounded by fears about affirmative action initiatives and how they might lose out as a result which then also feeds into stereotypes about things like “diversity hires” and lowered bars, in addition to so-called reverse racism.

And for some portion of people, it is just plain old racism and misogyny. Sadly, both are alive and well in this country and most others.

The problem is that it deals overtly with race and I think we are limited in where we can discuss that on this forum (I think there is one thread for all discussion about race).

To remind posters that discussions of race should be limited to the Politics Forums.

Thank you all for your understanding and compliance.

There is a thread to discuss race in admissions. I don’t believe there is a thread to discuss race in general (but such a thread could be created in the PF if desired).

For what its worth, I wasn’t thinking about race at all when I asked the question. The question arose as I was thinking about neurodiversity. So - not majority/minority, etc. but “divergent” in the context of evolution.

Is there a feature that allows one to ignore another person’s posts in this platform? TIA.

Go to Profile, Preferences, Users, then you can add for ignore or mute. Jot down the user(s) name first.

Thank you so very much.

Do you have Boar’s Head products where you live? They’re expensive and I’ve always trusted them. Now they have recalled 7 MILLION pounds of deli meats. They dominate the stores here, honestly. But I see their plant is in VA so I’m wondering if they are regional? I’m very disappointed.

They sell nationwide. We even had Boar Head salami on the Big Island. Plenty of delis here in the greater Seattle area use their cold cuts in their sandwiches.

Yes, we have Boar’s Head in our stores, and that’s the brand I’ve always bought. Out stores got rid of all of their meats (and other meats as well) and did a “deep clean” in the deli department. I just bought some cold cuts this past Thursday, so our delis are back in business.

Boar’s Head in AZ, too.

We were just talking about this because I bought and ate some Boars Head beef bolgana in early July. Lots of San Diego stores carry it. I’m in the danger category due to age but as far as I can tell, haven’t caught anything.

Lol H and I were just talking about Boars Head today - he is suppose to avoid lunch meat but Boars is one that he can have in moderation. We’re in Ohio.

We’ve always bought Boar’s Head and trusted the products. An immunocompromised family member ate their ham and roast beef last month, and experienced some serious GI distress that week. We thought it was more of the too-common IBD problems. When I read about the recalls, I was very concerned. Some Publix stores were reported to have done a deep cleaning, but I haven’t read if they all did.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service recommended retail delis clean and sanitize all food and non-food surfaces and discard any open meats and cheeses in the deli. I would be shocked if all stores didn’t follow. My daughter mentioned the Sprouts near her house had a totally empty deli last week, so assume they were in the process of cleaning.

I’m glad to know that, thanks.
