Coincidentally we head to NY on Friday, one way tickets. We’ll decide on the return tickets once we figure out more about family availability. We thought it might be possible that we will come back by way of a stop somewhere warm. (We’ll have to decide about that before I pack.)
Has anyone signed up for Medicare D $2000 out of pocket max plan? How is it working for you?
I don’t have any meds other than a generic maintenance drug. But I helped a couple people figure out the best Part D plan for their needs. It was interesting in that the plan with the lowest monthly rate was not necessarily the most inexpensive plan overall. Sometimes yes, sometimes no. The only way to know is to plug your information into the Medicare website Part D plan finder. The $2,000 cap works in an odd way, and some plans will actually end up less than $2,000 even with drugs that result in hitting the $2,000 cap on other plans. Overall, for the people I helped, their annual costs will be lower this year. Of course, because we don’t know what meds we might be prescribed mid year, it’s a crap shoot if your plan doesn’t cover the new med.
I thought all the Medicare Part D plans are $2000 max out of pocket drug costs this year.
I think the medication as to be on the formulary to be bound by the $2000 cap, but haven’t studied it because we don’t have Medicare D and so far haven’t reached $2000 out of pocket for any of us in a year.
Yes, the caveat is that the medication has to be on the formulary. The other twist is that there is a convoluted formula that can actually result in meeting the $2,000 cap before you actually meet it, depending on the drug & the plan. For an informative video explaining it, google “The New $2,000 Medicare Cap: It’s Not What You Think …” It’s a YouTube video.
Anyone have experience with long term car rentals? S will have a summer job out in CA and will need a car for the ten weeks he’s there.
The way my auntie does it when she visits long term (10 to 12 weeks), she’ll buy a $5k car then sell it at the end to recoup some. Would that be a possibility?
We suggested that - I don’t think he wants to go this route though. He thought some of the car rental companies might have a longer term deal - I haven’t done this myself, so was looking for other’s experiences.
Age may be an issue - some rental car companies won’t allow for a driver under 25. Got a long term rental from Enterprise after a car accident left mine in the shop for an extended period waiting on parts.
I last did it 40 years ago so no specific recommendations. Which city? I remember looking this up for someone on some other board and ran into this company by Googling “student long term car rentals”.
Age minimums can be a challenge. I think(?) there was a thread about this last summer.
Do people use their oven clean programs or whatever on electric ovens?
I’ve lived in my house over 15 years, and I don’t think I’ve ever used mine. I have a probably irrational fear of the house burning down from the high heat.
I had a small “potato explosion” in mine last weekend. I’ve cleaned it fairly well without using the clean function, but I may give that a try when we get back from vacation. (If anything weird happens I don’t want to be trying to deal with it before we head out for 2 weeks).
I use my self clean function a couple of times/year. Just make sure you take all the racks out.
I don’t use mine, and I recently read an article discussing the fact that even the chemical oven cleaners (which I also don’t use) are less toxic than the self cleaning emissions. I used the self cleaning cycle once, years ago, and it smelled so bad that I was worried about hurting my cats with the fumes.
I’ve used mine. +1 to taking all the racks out and I prefer to do it in weather that allows me to open the windows in the house/kitchen - can get a little stinky.
I have always used mine, at least a couple of times of year. As @momofboiler1 pointed out, remove the racks first. At least on my ovens, the clean cycle keeps the interior like new, just a bit of ash wipeup post cycle.
No way am i cleaning my oven manually. Love the cleaning cycle. If your racks are a mess you can leave them in the oven but they may discolor.
That’s very helpful, thanks. Don’t want to kill the cat!
Thanks everyone. I may try it, but I will wait until spring, not when it’s going to snow 3-6 inches in the next 12 hours :). Makes sense to open the window.
