We have two IKEA bed frames, one with drawers that works great. Fabulous mattress from IKEA too.
Here’s the old thread on mattresses that helped me: Talk to me about your bed - #117 by Marilyn
It’s considerably different these days and the old traditional mattress/box spring set might be in the minority now.
Our 13-year-old dishwasher started leaking all over the floor last night. Time for a new one! What are your recommendations??
Oh no!
I wish I had a recommendation for you but I’ve been very displeased with our latest Bosch. It’s only 6 years old and already had to have the heating unit replaced and I don’t think it washes that well.
My SIL loves her Miele.
I purchased an IKEA mattress thinking it would be temporary for a few years, and replaced when we sold the home and moved. It is a firm pocket spring mattress, and we added a +/- 1" foam topper. No move currently planned, and it has been great for much longer than expected!
I would recommend taking the dishes you normally use with you when you shop for a new dishwasher. We were considering a Bosch (10 years ago) but didn’t get it because the slats or whatever were too close together for our dishes.
PSA - (Not directed at veryhappy) It is NOT a good idea to run dishwashers while you’re not home, or even sleeping. We had ours catch on fire, and fortunately we were home and my husband noticed before it got out of hand.
Longshot idea. A few years ago, our dishwasher (decades old) started leaking a lot. It turned out that somehow it had gotten a tiny bit shifted in the cabinet mounting… so the door did not seal completely. My husband shifted it back, tightened the screws…. all OK. PHEW.
If you can spend $$, Miele is awesome.
We live in an area that does times pricing for electricity. 5pm-9pm is the high rate except all weekends are the low rate. On the company’s insert in the billing explaining the rate change, they recommended running the dishwasher at night. That would be when you go to bed! When we got our dishwasher replaced a few years ago, the plumber made a big point in NOT running it when you were not home or going to sleep. I also follow this for our washer and dryer.
Since we are retired, we can follow the time line. But, if you work 8-5 when do you run your dishwasher? or a load of dirty clothes?
Corelle fits nicely in the Bosch dishwasher. Our old stoneware didn’t. We donated all the stoneware and got Corelle—plain white. Our new Bosch is so quiet it’s hard to tell it’s on! It does a good job cleaning too. Our 1st lasted 13 years. We got the replacement from BestBuy.
Our DW is pretty quiet, but since the kitchen is open to the family room (with TV) we have almost always set the delay timer to run it at night.
Great idea, @Colorado_mom , and in fact that may be what’s causing the leak. However, the reason we may have jiggled the DW in the first place is because some plastic piece broke off the top rack and we now can’t slide the rack correctly. The last time that happened, it was ~$250 to have The Guy come and fix it. I think that I don’t want to spend anymore on a 13-y.o. DW.
I love our Miele dishwasher. We replaced a Bosch and have been very happy with that decision.
We bought a tempurpedic hybrid and ergonomic frame… and there was a virtual identical model half the price at costco
For all you MIele fans, which one do you have? Is the low-end Miele (G5008, from what I can tell on-line) good enough?? It’s $1,399 at most of the stores around me.
Mine is a 7 year old Futura Crystal which I understand is no longer available. The 5008 looks quite similar to it. We paid $1k for our but got a nice rebate because we bought 2 ovens and a cooktop at the same time.
VeryHappy - we got a new dishwasher two years ago - it’s an LG and you can hardly tell it’s on. The trick (my husband insisted) was to pay a bit more for the lower decibel sound. Ours is one of the lowest they make (38?).
I didn’t appreciate that aspect before the purchase - but it’s such a huge difference. Don’t need to even use the delay function because it’s so quiet. Had a Bosch previously and didn’t find it any more reliable than the LG (for us).
Thanks, everyone. I bought the Miele G5008. It will be delivered on Friday and came with a couple of decent rebates.
In the meantime, I’m washing a LOT of dishes. Our old/current DW was chock full when it died.
Question about probiotics - do you keep taking after antibiotics done?
A few weeks ago I had a sinus infection, received prescription for antibiotics. The PA at urgent care suggested I also take pribiotics. I do eat a fair amount of yogurt (which has been suggested in past with antibiotics) but decided to comply. The bottle has 30 day supply, so I’m continuing. Possibly I’d be taking antibiotics later this winter, but hoping not.
Not a question but a random “Try This!”
I have a lot of sterling silver flatware that was my MIL’s, grandmother’s, and great-grandmother’s. I love it. But I also have numerous items that don’t match anything and that are totally random and superfluous. I just sold six soup spoons to Replacements.com!! They’re sending me $204, which is awesome, and I’ll be selling them more things over the next several months. ![]()
