The Tennis Thread

Yay for Sunshine and freakishly tall Russian ( who I saw loss to wee Diego Swartzman in Miami) on taking out last American man thud decluttering matches shown on TC.

How tall should be Isner’s opponent to be refered to as “freakishly tall”?

Anyone over 6’5" is freakishly tall in my world.

Some really good results today. Very happy for The Waitress and PCB for taking out the Robot. Shame Sam completely lost the plot after the first set - Ostepenko is a brat. Also nice to see a few lowly random players make the second week of a slam.

I don’t see anyone in that half stopping KikiM from getting to the final. Now I’ll just have to hope it’s another chance to see her choke in a final.

As for the men - I’m left hoping Domi can pull off a miracle or that Stanley gets to the final and wins.

“Anyone over 6’5” is freakishly tall". Well, my sons are 6’5" and 6’6". Glad to know I only produced ONE freak!

^ In TennisWorld. In BasketballWorld, for instance, they would be normal.

My 6’5" kid did play varsity tennis in middle school and as a freshman in high school. But he was pretty good at whatever he tried and moved on to concentrate on what he liked best (volleyball). . But both kids played baseball , basketball, and lots of volleyball.
I have a 6" 11" nephew who played college basketball at an Ivy. Nobody wants to be labelled freakish , no matter how short, tall, skinny, etc. they may be. I know you did not mean to offend but you do seem to label and criticize lots of the tennis players.

Good for your sons and your nephew.

Forza Timea! Now go snatch the semi!

I like Ostapenko’s game. Goes for it, power, hits nice angles, excellent movement. Go Jelena!

Djoker fell off the boil right about the time Pepe Imaz entered his camp. Love your opponents, Novak, love them up.

Looking forward to Rafa vs Thiem. Go Dominic!

Lol @ Nole eating a bagel. He should try eating some meat.

Vamos Domi!!!

Wow! Haven’t seen such an epic choke since MJF came back from 1-6 1-5 down to Gabby! But at least Gabby made it respectable in the 3rd. Killer must be so proud of his charge.

Can’t believe KaPlisk is into a semi of any clay tourney let alone RG.

Kei is worthless.

Please Stan.

Back in 2011, Clijsters came back from 1-5, 0-40 in the deciding set to Ivanovic, winning it in the breaker. That was awful from Ana, but Svitolina’s performance takes it down a notch. Up a set and 5-1, then loses 12 out of 13 games! Somehow earns a match point and watches it sail away. In a slam quarter-final no less. Not sure how she’s ascended to #6 in the world with such a frayed electrical cord. Shocking.

Yeah, KaPlish’s lateral movement is poor even on a hardcourt. On clay she’s Titanic-like. Hits like a canon, iceberg mentality… seems to be enough. The anti-Svitolina.

Go youngsters!

@dunboyne…Do you know there is actually a change.org petition regarding the Pepe Imaz - Nole relationship? It is pretty rambling and it’s unclear what they are petitioning to do, but they are not a fan of the partnership. I don’t think I’m supposed to link it, but it’s easily findable via Google and I recommend checking it out. Highly amusing.

Ha. That doesn’t surprise me. Nole’s hardcore fans must be scratching their heads. I will check it out! Thanks.

Stanley ^:)^ ^:)^

Congrats to Simona. It would have been tragic if KaPlisk made the final - and I say that as a fan.

I’m going to try to keep an open mind about Jelana - but it’s hard as she is such a brat on court.

Stan the man!!

Dominic just not competitive versus Rafa. Probably a good indication of how far Djokimaz has fallen. Great effort by Stan, Murray was playing well.

C’mon JOstapenko! Make a match of it at least.

You cannot be serious. Unless there is strong wind JOstapenko will win. She is a better player on clay and it seems her second coach makes a real difference.

JOstapenko is the female version of Wawrinka but she is not playing the female version of Rafa.

Dunboyne, I don’t think the loss to Thiem is an indicator of how far Djokovic has fallen. Three weeks ago, Thiem beat Nadal easily in straight sets in the quarter final of the Rome Masters, and Djokovic then beat Thiem also easily in straight sets in the semi final the following day.

That is not to say that Djokovic is playing at his best. Clearly, since winning the French Open last year, his level of play has dropped suddenly and significantly. His heart just isn’t in it. His performance against Thiem in the French Open semi final highlights exactly what has been so confusing about Djokovic. One day, he will dominate a player like Thiem or Del Potro, and then the next day, he is utterly dominated by players like Zverev and Thiem. He is now ranked #4 in the world. Unless he plays unexpectedly well at Wimbledon, there is a good chance that Federer will overtake him and that he will drop to #5.

It will be interesting to see when, how, and indeed, if, Djokovic ever regains his old form.
