The Tennis Thread

Well congrats to Jelana on becoming a GSC. Her fearlessness reminds me of Seles (my fav of all time) but with a gazillion more errors in one match then Monica ever made in a whole tournament.

I think Simona is always destined to be the bridesmaid. :frowning:

And after all this, Angie is still #1.

Now pretty please Stanley, salvage my weekend.

Nicely done Jelena! Poor Halep, watching leads evaporate, but you have to hand it to JOs for the fight.

Should be a great men’s final. And you’re absolutely right @Alexandre. Let’s see what Djoker can do at Wimbledon.

Wawrinka is 3-0 in Majors’ finals, but Nadal in the French Open is impossible to beat (9-0 if he reaches the Semi Finals). Should be a great match. If Stan can get in a groove, he could surprise. Either way, a player I admire wins, so I am looking forward to it.

10 for Nadal on clay. He so appreciates every win he gets.

Nice touch (Friday) when he was interviewed on the court after his semi in front of the crowd and he pulled out his best French to speak.

Can’t even say Stanley made a hash of it (though 1st set he did play really poorly.) Any one would have gotten Decima-ted by this Rafa.

I like them both, would of preferred a closer match, but Rafa was too good today. I love how happy he was to win.

What a beast. In hindsight, Rog made a great decision to dodge Rafa on clay this year. He too would have been beaten up. Amazing perseverance shown by the old guys this year. Can’t wait to see how potent Rafa will be on grass.

Amazing how well Rafa can still play when he’s healthy. Hope his body holds up for a while now that he seems to have put the pieces back together. Will see if he’s modified his stye of play just enough to give his body a break and still have an outstanding tennis game

It will be interesting to see if Nadal can turn things around at Wimbledon. From 2006-2011, he made it to the finals 5 times, and won it twice. The only year he did not make it to the final was 2009, and that’s because he missed it entirely due to injury. However, since 2012, he has not made it past the 4th round.

Looking at tickets for the US Open, the first week, Wednesday and Thursday. Usually we buy shade seats in Louis Armstrong. I can’t figure out where the temporary Armstrong is going to be this year, so I am thinking that might not be a good option. We are mostly outer-court spectators, but my mom will be 80 this year, and thinks she needs a seat. So we are trying to decide between Ashe nosebleeds or the Grandstand. I sat in the grandstand last year, but didn’t notice where the shade might be.

^ The temporary stadium is going to be in parking lot B which is to the right of the boardwalk if you are coming from the 7 train or LIRR. Of course, this is the parking lot I always use. :frowning:

I think you are better off Grandstand for your mom. I think there are some seats near the top under an overhang always in shade at Grandstand, plus you can always keep moving with the shade (it’s what I do in Armstrong even though I have reserved seats.)

Another vote for the Grandstand. I agree that way at the top there is always some shade. I hate being way up in Ashe. I feel like I can barely see the players.

Ashe is awful unless you have court side seats or get invited into a lux box (but even the upper lux boxes you feel miles always although the food and drink is great, so.)

I’ve also heard that the roof - even when open - makes it extremely loud in Ashe and with it closed deafening.

I wished they had torn it down and built new, smaller stadium in its place.

Ashe Stadium is a monstrosity born of greed. Worse now because that membrane they cantilevered on top acts like an amplifier. Unanticipated consequences. Now what? $150 million later. It’s here to stay for decades, probably. There was no way they were tearing down a stadium built in 1997, but they should have. The sad part is that Arthur Ashe himself was cerebral and reserved, the opposite of brash, which is what Ashe Stadium has become. It’s about as intimate as a bass drum, unworthy of its name.

Fab match by Lucie over Domi in Birmingham. Saved 2 match points. Was a real battle.

Petra look great and won easily.

Vika played her first match back in Majorca. Match was suspended at 5*- 4 with Ozaki serving for match. Vika very rusty.

Roger won today in Halle. Sir Andrew lost badly in Queens  along with the Robot and Stanley. Kyrgios retired early in the second with an injury after slipping on court during 1st set. Organizers must be tearing their hair out.

Bravo to Cici Bellis…takes out Suarez-Navarro in Mallorca…her first WTA grass court tournament ever after a great tournament at the French winning two rounds and beating Kiki Bertens, a top 20 player.

Lucie  Fantastic match by both players. Lucie was down 5-2 iirc in 3rd set, then saved a match point in 8th game, broke for 4-5, then saved another 3 mp in tb to win 7-6 in the third. 2nd point in tb was probably best point I’ve seen all year.

Here is first 2 pts of tb.

Petra  very good match against KikiM. She got a bit wobbly trying to serve it out in the second and just squeaked it out in tb.
You couid tell how much she wanted this as barking was back.

Draws are out.

Haven’t had time to do thorough look yet.

Bit of a shaky match from Petra - having gotten broken in first game, and getting broken in 2nd 4-2 up, iirc. But broke back in 9th game and served it out for 6-3/6-4 win over JoLa.

Both Andrew and Rafa’s matches were yawners.

Watching LovelyLucas v Jazari, too. Tight match with LL up 2-1 and on serve 4-4 in 3rd.

Already two retirements - NickK and Istomin. Top half of the draw gets v lucky break with NK gone.

Going to watch of a bit of Tommy’s match since it might be his last match ever at Wimby.
