The Tennis Thread

Always a good day in TennisWorld when Genie and CiCi lose simultaneously!

Vika looked great - fitter than before she had the baby. Took her a bit to settle down in first set after going down 4-0, but got one of the breaks back playing much better tennis even though she lost the 1st. CiCi was basically a spectator the last two sets.

As for Genie - fell apart completely after winning first set 6-1.

LovelyLucas got it done in 4 but Tommy lost in 4 as did Stanley. But he gets to stick around and watch the GF now. Bit of a role reversal.

I’m really enjoying the coverage from all the courts on Watch ESPN - especially the comms which are so less annoying then the ones on ESPN. It’s even better when the court has no comms covering a match.

^^^ What do you find annoying about CiCi? Ms. Genie Doubtfire has a lot of detractors with her off-court game, sure, but CiCi? What has she done that’s irksome?

I know Cici a little bit. She is a terrific kid. She respects the game and the players of the past more than just about any young player I’ve ever met…and I’ve met lots. I’m also curious about what bothers you about her @emilybee? She is NOT Genie Bouchard II.

The hype ( which I know isn’t her fault.) The American comms do it with every up and comer. Turns me off to the player. They’ve been talking about her as a potential slim winner for 3 years already!!

They do it to every player coming up. There is a long line of “the next coming” who’ve flopped. It’s like they can’t objectively look at a players game. They take one fluke win or run at a tourney and the anointing begins. Remember Melanie Oudin? Oy. Taylor Fritz was supposed to be the second coming too.

They did the same thing with Genie (American lite.) Chrissy anointed her a multiple slam winner before the final at Wimby. Couid they not see her strokes were technically flawed and once the other players caught on how to play her she was going to flop? And this was before horrid off court behavior was exposed.

And it’s not like most of the players I like are winning slams left and right. My favorites dwell in outer court world (except Roger) and have zero chance of ever winning a major.

@emilybee I appreciate your taking the time to explain your viewpoint. I guess I’d argue that it’s unfair to blame Cici, (not that you do, but it feels like it since it seems you actively root against her) or Oudin, or Fritz for the press anointing them "the next big thing.
Yes, she got a ton of press when she beat Cibulkova in 2014, but I think she handled it well. She has been approaching her still new professional life in a workman-like way progressing through the lower tier tournaments and moving up the rankings to a solid top 50 world ranking. Will she continue to rise? Who knows. Perhaps you see major flaws in her game. I don’t…The thing she lacks at the moment is a huge shot that can end points quickly and reliability. She is not a really big girl like many of the top players so she will have to work particularly hard at staying healthy. If she does you might see even bigger things out of this girl. She really is a great kid. I hope you’ll find your way to appreciating her success!
And like you I’m usually watching the up and comers and the late stage hangers on toiling on the outside courts. There is a lot more going on out there than what we see on ESPN or Tennis Channel.

^ She also has a dreadful second serve.

Just finished watching a fab match between Petra Martic and DashaG. Penultimate 17th game took about 15 minutes with PM having at least 6 break points (iirc) before finally converting. Then she held at 15 to win 10-8. So nice to see PM back again and playing well.

I see Klizan retired too. What is with all these retirements on the men’s side?

Going to peak in on JJ/Aga before settling on next match to watch.

Jeesch, and another retirement!

My friends have CC tickets today - but only two so theyve been trolling OCW because 3rd friend had to queue and didn’t get in line until 4:30 so only got grounds pass. One is a huge Roger fan so might have gone in for his match. At least wouidn’t have to waste too much time in there.

And now 7th retirement in men’s draw. Feel so bad for Feli after such a good grass court season.

Had to go back and watch the Tomic/Zverev match given all the controversy. He really needs help or should just quit tennis altogether.

Mamarenko continung her comeback in fine fashion. But ouch for Aiya at sucking sound of SF points falling off.

And poor Vekic. What a heartbreaker. I’d be in tears, too.

Peeked in to see my mom’s friend’s grandson lose his dubs match in 3rd set tb against Mirnyi and partner. Once I saw who he was playing knew it was NID they’d lose. But came through qualies - so good on them for just making GS main draw.

So disappointed for Petra. I had no idea she was Brengle’s pigeon.

She looked completely knackered in the third set. :frowning:

And I see Jerzy’s looking like he’ll have another fluke run here, creating havoc in the draw, then likely do nothing again for another 4 years.

In spirit of this forum you were supposed to mention that he represented Ivy League at Wimbledon.

I have huge respect for anyone who battles through the qualies to make it in the main draw. That’s where all the hungriest players are. Good for your friend’s son @emilybee . I bet he’s happy with that main draw paycheck!

@Tanbiko, I would have had to know that!

I’m sure he and his partner were thrilled with making draw and paycheck.

Well, my draw on ladies side is a mess with all my Czechs gone. I’m sure Lucie was affected by BMS horrid injury, Even watching at home and listening to her screams affected me! And such a long time for help to come. Felt awful for Cirstea, too. Couid definitely be career ending injury for BMS.

Aga holding on for dear life saving two match points. Should be interesting next match against The Waitress.

As for the men - hurrah for Sela! Such a weird match-up to watch, but I love it when wee guy takes down FTP.

Good to see one of my OCG into Rd3. But Misha looked totally knackered after the match and has to play Roger next.

Sorry to see Bethanie Mattek-Sands injury. Ouch! I am glad that there is video evidence that Venus was not at fault in the car accident.

Was just awful. I saw it happen live and the screaming was just ear piercing.

Yesterday’s matches were so ho-hum I can’t even remember who I watched play.

I did watch Sock’s 5 set loss against qualifier. New winner in worst hair on tour award. Eddie Munster-ish with enough product a tornado couldn’t muss it up. But a great win for the young lad.

Watching Rybarikova at the moment. So far she"s winning easily. Always nice to see someone able to back up after big win.

Friend finally had time to email about their day at Wimby so thought I share:

"Tennis-wise Wimby was a bit of a disappointment, we picked the day when
everybody was retiring, Sue wanted to see Roger play for one last time but
they brought his match forward so by the time she and Cat went to Centre
Court they’d already played 1 set and only got 3 more games before the
opponent retired. So they went off to Court 17 to wait for Feli’s match
while I was watching Dimitrov on Court 12. Sadly both players in my match
were playing really badly and so after one set I decided to leave and join
the girls, who had sat through a wimmin’s match waiting for Feli to come on.
Unfortunately they switched Feli to another court without telling us, and by
the time we realised, the queue was too big for us to stand a chance of
getting in :frowning:

And all that after Sue had got up at 4am to join the queue, because we
missed out on getting a ticket from Ticketmaster the previous day (long
story!). Cat and I felt guilty sleeping in, but at least we put some
breakfast together for her, found her in the queue and threw it over the
fence for her (surprised we didn’t get shot!)

But … it was gorgeous weather, we still had a lovely time and we did see
Gasquet and Ferrer, we also saw the Poo standing on the balcony outside the
player’s lounge! The rules at Wimby are getting worse and worse, and I’m
sure someone sits up for weeks just thinking up new ways of annoying and
inconveniencing the crowd."

They aslo saw Mario Ancic with his girlfriend having a bite to eat at the Pizza Express. That is one of the bennies of going to Wimby - all the fans and players milling about and eating in all the same pubs/restaurants since most stay in the village.

Just finished up the women’s matches. Funny how the three “Polish” sisters all lost the first set but came to back to win in 3.

Saving the men for tomorrow since it’s middle Sunday.

Gilles had one job to do this tourney and he didn’t eff it up. I thought with the way my luck was going today for sure he was toast after Rafa came back.

No one I was pulling for on the women’s side won, except Garbine. And a few I didn’t care either way.

Roger, as usual, didn’t even break a sweat.

It was hard to see either Nadal or Muller beating Cilic after their match went into overtime. Cilic hasn’t dropped a set, must be fresh. Rafa wasn’t going to win this tourney, anyway. His lateral movement was suspect. The grass/dirt was a factor but you could see he was a half-step behind, guessing a lot. And his returns were poor – short and airy. Not a good combination against a solid serve-volleyer. Full credit to Muller, though. Held the lead like a champ.

Agree likely to go out to Marin.

Yup, Marin fresh as a daisy.

Rafa complaining in his presser about being put on Court 1. Bizarre since CC is playing faster he’d probably have lost in straights.
