I watched most of the matches on ESPN 3. Commentators don’t babble at all, talk about themselves or other players, never talk during points and barely during the games. Plus, only commericial breaks are between sets.
@abasket, Agree about cakewalk draw. More like something you’d find in a 500, but you can only play those put in front of you. Was a NID final.
I’m most upset about the slowness of the court this year. The USO is supposed to be a fast court but it was playing like blue clay. When the AO is playing faster something is seriously wrong.
Rafa’s only 31. When he’s 35 and still winning slams he’ll get some love.
Totally agree that Evert is a terrible commentator. A lot of the commentators annoy me, like the inane banter between “Cliffy” and “Pammy”.
Anyway, my gratz to Nadal. Nice to him playing well and finally getting more aggressive (i.e. approaching the net). I haven’t watched him play for a few years and he was definitely hitting the ball with more pace and coming to the net more often.
Nope, don’t like Nadal. I can’t stand the gamesmanship and the stalling. I can’t watch him play. And I really don’t want him to catch Roger’s grand slam total.
I am a little worried about Cliffy. I think he’s getting a bit vague. I have liked him over the years - he seems like quite a gentleman.
So after 4 snoozefests to start the WTC Finals; Venus & Alonja put on an over three hour dramarama mess of a match. 7-5 6-7 7-5 and literally no one held serve except less than a handful of times. There were 20 breaks of serve! Venus broke 11 times and had something like 26 bps. Aljona was 9 for 18.
The good news is since KaPlisk won in two easy sets over Mugu, Ostapenko can’t advance. That match didn’t get started until 11:30 or so and I think it was way past Mugu’s bedtime given her lackluster performance.
In Basel, Rogi delivered a masterclass beating Tiafoe 6-1 6-3.
Yesterday in Singapore, Sunshine delivered a beatdown on Simona 6-0 6-2. Simona barely won points. Then Garcia, after weeping into her towel, went on a tear winning four games in a row to win it 7-5 over Svitolina, who served for the match twice. Best match of tourney so far.
So both 2017 GSC didn’t make it to the semi’s. It’s Venus and KaPlisk (who IMO tanked her dead rubber with Aljona to save energy for the weekend.) Not sure which one won the group though I’m pretty sure it’s KaPlisk who ended up 4-2 while Venus is 4-3 in sets won/lost.
I was so disappointed yesterday after Sunshine lost out on being #1 in her group to CarolineG. But it worked out for the best as Sunshine beat KaPlisk handily and is into the final along with Venus - who beat Garcia in 3 sets.
JMdP through to final in Basel. Awaiting the winner of Rob v Goffin. Hopp Rogi!
Sunshine !!! Makes up for all those piles of finals loses this year! Got a bit dicey in the end when she was up 5-0 and Venus got it back to 4-5. But she held on, breaking for the win 6-4 6-4.
Off to watch Rog v JMdP. Should be a close one given their history this year.
Great day yesterday in Tennis World! Goat, lovely Lucas and Sunshine all taking home trophies! Rog was a bit dodgy but got the job done. Title # 95 and now in 2nd place behind just Connors. Skippping Bercy - smart move even though that means no chance for YE#1.
So far very competitive matches at ATP World Tennis Final. Even though Rogi won in straights he was rusty and Sock kept it even on serve in second set until the tb. Had loads of bps but terrible conversion rate. I expect him to turn it up in next match.
Rafa playing Goffin tonight. If he’s healthy I expect a beat down, even though this court is too fast for Rafa’s liking. Just don’t see anything in Goffin’s game that can hurt Rafa.
Domi/Dimi has gone to 3rd set. Best looking match of the bunch.
