Rafe v Nick. Coco moving to the 3rd round. Great tennis. Happy 4th.
Wow, this guy sounds like a real gem. Does this kind of stuff happen often?

Re: Wimbledon versus Indian Wells.
Indian Wells has twice the acreage of the All England Club and fewer tennis courts. So there are wide plazas for strolling, lots of places for refreshments and lots of tents selling tennis gear and clothes. So when I get tired of so much sitting in the stadiums, there is space to get up and move around without dealing with shoulder to shoulder crowds. (I think the number of attendees per tournament is about the same). Not to say I wouldn’t love to attend Wimbledon, if I could ever win the ballot, but I’m saying that Indian Wells is a really nice tournament to attend. The mountains turn violet in the evening shade. There are palm trees and lots of flower beds. Some years have been hot but all in all it’s a wonderful time.
It’s pretty unusual but Tomic is a repeat offender, iirc. He’s an arse. Publicly has said he already has enough money to last him a lifetime so doesn’t give a fill in the blank. He was once thought to be “the next big thing” in Oz and got a lot of endorsement money. He has a tennis father from you know where and I think that has really screwed him up. His father was banned from tourneys after punching Bernie’s hitting partner in the face about 5 or so yrs ago.
Kyrgios has been fined for lack of effort and tanking in matches, too, among a host of other things he’s been fined for.
Thrilled for Simona and crossing my fingers for Roger!
There’s a poll result going around social media that says 1 in 8 guys who were surveyed said they’d be able to get one point against Serena Williams in a tennis game. That sounds ridiculous to me, but I’m not a player or fan of tennis. What do you think? One in 8 guys is more than all the guys who play tennis.
I mean, maybe they’re counting on Serena double-faulting. But does she need to try get the very best deep serves against James from Accounting?
This is agonizing. I’m exhausted watching. But what entertainment!
Very exciting!
I’m gutted.
At least Simona saved part of my weekend.
Just ugh.
I had heard the presenters say earlier in the week that Philip Brook and the umpire were at the end of their terms, but I was a bit surprised the Duke of Kent didn’t present the trophies today. I suppose that now that Kate is patron and DoK is 84, it might be time for a transition. I was SO hoping for a different outcome in this final.
That was amazing.
I really felt bad for Federer. He played better than Djokovic throughout the match except when it mattered most. Djokovic just came up with the bigger points when needed, particularly in the fifth set.
I am always happy when Djokovic wins, but I hate seeing anybody lose a match like this. Hats off to both for proving us one of the most entertaining matches I have ever had the privilege of watching.
Ugh! Not the results I wanted. He was SO CLOSE!!!
Remember back in the early 1990s where for more than a year not a single tournament — Grand Slam or otherwise — was won by someone over the age of 28? Tennis was thought to be the game where you HAD to be young to succeed.
Pretty crazy tennis time now to be a fan… and the crazy about this match is that Federer and Djokovic both looked like they could go another set after it was done!
Sorry but I do not like Serena’s outfit.
It is much better with the skirt
How do you all feel about Coco’s parents not working at all? Is this common for young tennis stars like her? Do the parents have their own wealth? I know she has two younger brothers. Supporting a family of 5 at 15 seems like a heck of a lot of pressure.
Hollywood child actors have their money protected to a certain degree - what are the rules for young athletes?
Maybe I’m missing something here.
I thought Coco’s parents owned a restaurant. They showed the grandparents and the little brothers there at a watch party during Wimbledon. Does it belong to someone else in the family?
As for tonight’s match, I liked Naomi Osaka going into the match, but now I adore her. What a classy young lady!
Thanks for that info, @2VU0609. I had just read that they quit their jobs for their daughter’s tennis career but with your mention of a restaurant, I know see there is a family owned bar in Del Ray. Seems like ownership has some kinks to it as the Coco’s grandmother invested either $400K or $500K depending on the source and is now suing her son.
