Her parents seemed to have been grooming her from a very young age to be the next big thing . She has two younger brothers and everybody in the family has the initials CDG. I honestly don’t know how to feel about all this. Some kids seem so programmed from such an early age that it must be a very difficult path.
I went to the Open Wednesday and Thursday. We had a lot of fun and saw a lot of good tennis (and my son caught a ball from Kyrios after his match on the grandstand). My favorite match was Svitolina vs Venus Williams. It was on Armstrong, on Wednesday when all the other courts were rained out. They were both playing very well. And the crowd was great.
When was the last time that all 4 semi finalists at a Masters 1000 event were 23 years old or younger. Right now, we have Berrettini (23 years old), Zverev (23 years old), Medvedev (22 years old) and Tsitsipas (21 year old). I still think the Big 3 will dominate the majors in 2020, but still, seeing four next gen players in the semi final of the Masters event is very refreshing.
I found it very refreshing, also.
I’m meeting friends in Paris at the end of the month and we are going to Bercy for two days. It’s been a long time since I’ve gone to that tourney.
Lucky you Emily. Paris is my favorite city on Earth. I am keeping an eye on Medvedev. He is looking very menacing these days.
Feel bad for AO qualifiers playing in smoke. Conditions looked terrible yesterday. Should have delayed, putting health at risk is not good. Sounds like a couple of retirements because of it
It’s awful.
A ball kid collapsed on court, too.
And at the same time the qualifiers were playing outside in the smoke filled air, the top players were practicing on Laver, Court and Melbourne Arenas.
They got some rain yesterday which I assume helped somewhat, but it really depends on the wind direction if there is smoke or not.
And the indoor practice courts can’t be used (TA backup plan) because the ventalation system brings air in from outside but there is no way to get the air out. That was according to the Simon Briggs - the esteemed tennis reporter for The Guardian.
They are expecting more rain over the weekend and over the course of next week. Hopefully, the rain will clear up the air. On the plus side, the weather is relatively mild, with highs expected in the 80s most days, which is relatively nice by Melbourne standards this time of the year.
Roland Garros now cancelled. Will be rescheduled for late September.
Evidently it conflicts with the Laver Cup. https://lavercup.com/news/2020/03/17/laver-cup-statement-on-schedule
Yep. One of my pods was trying to think of who would make up the teams with RG going on at same time. Had plenty for world - Sock, Isner, Kyrgios, Raonic. Europe - Roger. He doesn’t need anyone else.
The weather in Paris in late September/early October is not conducive to the tennis game. It is too rainy and cool. With only one indoors tennis court, there will be way too many delays.
They should have moved the entire schedule by 4-6 weeks.
-French Open: June 21-July 5
-Olympics: July 25-August 2 (stays the same)
-Wimbledon: August 17-August 30
-Canadian Open: September 11-August 20
-Cincinnati: September 19-27
-US Open: September 28-October 11 (may have to be played in Indian Wells if the weather in NYC is too wet, although with 2 courts with retractable roofs, playing it in NYC is possible)
-Shanghai: October 25-November 1
-Paris: November 14-November 22
-Nitto: November 29-December 6
It is not ideal, but it avoids the hot weather prone to France and England in mid July, and works better than plucking the French Open and playing it in late September, one week after the US Open, when Paris will be too cool and rainy.
This would also allow players to participate in all four majors without compromising the Laver Cup, although players would have to choose between Cincinnati and the Laver Cup.
Probably all moot. I bet the whole 2020 season over. Freeze everyone’s ranking as of week IW was supposed to start. Start all over I’m Australia 2021.
Could be Emily, but I hope not. Asia seems to be under control, with very few new cases. If Europe follows the same timeline, come May, it should be clear of the virus, and the US in June. But that’s assuming things go according to the current trend. Things could easily regress. Let us wait and see.
Will be interesting to see if they can pull this off.
I’m watching the tennis from Serbia. It’s Djoker’s exo. Full stadium, no social distancing at all! and no one wearing masks . There are lines people, ball kids and they are even handing the players their towels after points! The players are even hugging at end of match! ?
I am watching too. On Instagram I saw they all played soccer and seemed to have some sort of kids day. Is there no virus there?
There is virus there, but they seem to have lifted pretty much all restrictions.
“As of Jun 5, 2020 at 3 p.m Serbia has confirmed 11,667 cases of COVID-19 and 247 deaths. 6,931 people have recovered, leaving about 4,736 active cases.”
I’m completely shocked.
Per NYT:
“The United States Tennis Association is set to announce this week that it will hold the 2020 United States Open with the support of the men’s and women’s tours. The tournament is expected to run as originally scheduled from Aug. 31 to Sept. 13, but without spectators, at the U.S.T.A. Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York, according to four tennis officials who spoke on the condition of anonymity because the plans had not been announced and formal government approval had yet to be secured.”
I heard on the local news last night that the Citi Open in DC is planning to run as scheduled at the beginning of Aug.
