I remember the first time I saw her play in person. Was in the early 90’s at the Open. She was playing Pam Shriver. I had never seen a match were both players moved as slow as molasses. She hit the heck out of the ball, though.
I tried to watch the women’s final live, went to bed early, with the TV on. I did wake up to see bits and pieces and the final score, but didn’t actually watch any of it. I will re-watch today.
I didn’t watch it and we had to leave early this morning to go to CT for my great nephews 1st birthday party. We were listening to Car Talk on the drive and during the break for news they gave the result. So much for that match. Maybe I’ll watch it tomorrow after the men’s (no way I’m getting up at 3:30 to watch it live) or I’ll watch it on Monday while I’m packing.
I watched the first 2 sets then went to bed at 5 thinking it looked likd it would last forever.
Djokovic is my favorite player though I feel like i should root for Murray because I’m British. I really can’t once he starts fretting and carrying on.
They both carried on. It was a horrible display of behavior. Even my mom called me and told me she couldn’t decide who she disliked more between the two.
I really have no idea how either of them have any fans.
Actually Emily, Djokovic does not have many fans. Being a citizen of a tiny (6 million Serbs) and impoverished country does not help. I personally like him because I think he is supremely talented. My favorite players of all time are Connors, Borg, McEnroe, Lendl, Agassi and now Djokovic. Most of those players had their flaws, but I really enjoyed watching them play. It is not like I know those players personally to pass judgement on them. That being said, Djokovic is not popular whatsoever. In fact, outside of Asia, the crowd is almost always very anti-Djokovic. It is a wonder how he manages to win as much as he does when the spectators are almost always very much in favor of his opponent.
I have to admit, this last AO lacked the great matches of years past.
I laughed out loud a couple of times when they showed Andy screaming in super slo-mo. He is so goofy looking.
Djokovic seems to me a decent person and from what I understand is well-liked on the tour.
Jimmy Connors is/was a pretty horrible human being by all accounts. I was never a fan.
I’ve always liked McEnroe despite his tantrums. He is a year older than me, and we used to spectate at some of his college matches during my senior year in high school. My sister was a ball girl during one of his NCAA matches that year; she said it was terrifying ha ha. He didn’t start to really act up though until he joined the ATP. His commentary is aces.
^ About 5 years ago at a Senior Tour match, Johnny Mac walked right over to my friends and I when we were doing the “Aussie Aussie Aussie” cheer for Pat and said - and I quote: " **** you, **** you, ****you." We were shocked to say the least - especially my 80 year old mother!
The soon to be Mrs. Murray has quite the potty mouth, too.
I was reading about Novak’s beginnings. I think he has a good sense of humor. He plays great tennis. He doesn’t look like he is on steroids. I like him.
Connors and McEnroe were characters to be sure. Lendl and Borg were the opposite. Cold as ice. Borg gave me my first adult-sized racket when I was 8, so I have a soft spot for him. I got to see him live in Dubai back in 1981 where he played an exhibition match against another one of my favorites, Guillermo Vilas (very underrated and underappreciated champion). I used to wear a headband just like Borg back in the day…on and off the court. I was his #1 fan!!!
One of the reasons I really like Agassi and Djokovic is because of their courtside charisma. They are fun to watch, in addition to being very talented, but somehow, they keep it clean, as opposed to Connors and McEnroe.
When I left the house Djokovic was up 4-2 in the first set; when we came out of church I asked my husband to check his phone for the score - and I was amazed when he told me that ND won the first in a tiebreak - what happened?? I missed all the shenanigans by ND as well as the interruption by the protestors - I saw the 3rd and 4th sets, though, and I just can’t pull for Andy to win. The way he acts on court is just appalling.
I found it really interesting that in his match with Kyrgrios he was quiet and professional (I imagine not wanting to get the crowd into it), but with Berdych he ramped up his screaming and grunting and outbursts. I think in the final the more professional Murray came out on the court, but while I was away from the match he evidently got frustrated enough that the Murray I can’t stand came out. It’s a shame, too, because I think he played so well through the tournament. When he was yelling at his box “That is SO unhelpful”, my eyes were rolling. Ugly, ugly man.
I haven’t seen this confirmed anywhere, but I keep reading that Murray methodically smashed all his racquets while ND was celebrating…??
I did think he had recovered somewhat by the speeches, and was as gracious as he could bring himself to be.
I can’t speak to whether ND was being a big faker or not - I like him better than I used to but that’s not saying much. Frankly, after Roger lost I didn’t really care too much who won the trophy. We have been getting all kinds of Jacob’s Creek commercials which show Novak philosophizing so I am a little sick of the Mr. Perfect act he seems to have developed. I still remember his parents being terrifically awful in the box in years past.
I guess I’m too harsh. They’re not out there to win my approval! And I guess they are all maturing.
I guess the only “new” semifinalist this year ended up being Madison Keys.
emilybee, did you see that Pat has stepped down from being Davis Cup captain? Wally Masur is the “acting captain” until Lleyton retires. I guess Pat is head of Tennis Australia too and found doing both jobs too tough (I’m sure you saw this!).
Thanks for the correction, eb. I was trying to listen but I just kept staring…
Although I did think it was a bit strange to schedule the news conference in the middle of a big women’s match (final I think, but it might have been SF). So we got a split screen.
